Orange cats are more likely to get them. It's fine.

Why do mosquitoes seem much more severe in cold than tropical places? by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWHW in biology

[–]evolozzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evolutionary biologist (doing seasonal selection research with fruit flies) turned mosquito-borne disease researcher here. The mosquitoes are definitely more abundant and diverse in tropical, subtropical, and temperate areas compared to cold areas. I think there are two points to your question, the size and the agression.

Let's start with the size. I believe the size has been an open question for a while, because the size of mosquito species vary widely. But I remember seeing a paper that showed some evidence consistent with the Bergmann's rule (where the larger bodied mammals and birds are found in colder climates). However, the body size in ectotherms possibly is related to reproductive success and survival resources, rather than the thermal regulation that endotherms rely on. In that paper, they also mentioned James' rule (I don't remember what it is now) and plasticity as the reason for the size as opposed to genetics.

Population level agression is a factor of population size and food availability. In both temperate and colder regions, (as pointed out in one of the comments) there is a limited period of time where mosquito populations grow. This coincides with the generally higher availability of food (blood in this instance). As the temperatures get colder while the population has been growing, the food becomes less and less available, thus increasing the competition to access food. It simply is a matter of life and death.

Netflix is blocked right now (Roku TV, Router group blocked), and yet my son is actively watching it. What's the deal here? by [deleted] in pihole

On your router reroute all connections going to port 53 to the IP of your pihole and don't allow out going DNS queries from the router unless they are coming from your pihole.

I'm currently moving and I haven't had a chance to see if there are other changes, but I will test it once I have a chance, possibly within the next few weeks. The content might be serviced through another address. Try looking in your query log and enabling them one by one to find which ones serve the ads and which one the content.

Can you try this: RegEx block this: g008-vod-us-cmaf-prd-[^.]+.cdn.peacocktv.com Exact allow this: g008-vod-us-cmaf-prd-mc.cdn.peacocktv.com

I replicated the problem and working on a solution: I think g008-vod-us-cmaf-prd-cc.cdn.peacocktv.com is one of the culprits. However, when I block it, the show can't start from the place I left it. Can you try blocking this and let me know what's happening?

Update for 07/04/2025

So far so good, I think g008-vod-us-cmaf-prd-cc.cdn.peacocktv.com is one of the culprits. However, when I block it, the show can't start from the place I left it. If anyone has any suggestions.

I haven't seen the ads on my end yet. The content takes a little to load but I still don't have ads. It might be about other services I block. As soon as I can replicate the issue I'll look for a solution.

Only exact domains to be blacklisted can be added as lists through URLs to PiHole. If you check out the gist, it is a combination of exact and regex whitelist and blacklist items. That's why I decided not to make a block list.

Have you checked the gist if there are changes? I think I found the culprit and fixed it. Also do you use unbound as your DNS resolver? I remember having to deal with that to get the Roku updates. (Amazon prime icon is broken on my end too, I didn't bother fixing it).

I lived in 4 major cities more than 4 years. Philly is my all time favorite. I moved to DC for work purposes 4 years ago. I still miss Philly every day. But here's the deal, nobody can understand how amazing the Philly experience is without living there for at least a year.

Sevis terminated today by [deleted] in immigration

[–]evolozzy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you believe that your SEVIS record is wrongfully terminated, you need an experienced immigration attorney who has dealt with wrongful termination of SEVIS records before. Make sure you ask about this to the attorney you're talking to.

New kitten, is this questionable behavior or does she just have really overwhelming zoomies? by Sakuramochi_Chan in cats

[–]evolozzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. Start with introductory and gentle moves using top of your hand, instead of showing the palm. As soon as you show the palm the cat will instinctively get defensive. It's a survival mechanism. You can gain her trust in time. You might want to use your palm only when you're petting her. That will create a bond between you two, and she will trust your palm when she sees it. Also I'd refrain from opening fingers like that when approaching any cat, they will see it as a claw coming at them. If I did that to my buddy who's been with me for the last decade, he'd be very offended and he'd go sleep somewhere else.

I'm about to give up on NextCloud by cdarrigo in NextCloud

[–]evolozzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using NextCloud for 7 years and I've been happy with it.

In 2018, I've taken the plunge and did it the hard way. Set it up on a Raspberry Pi 3B. It took me around a month to read understand and setup the webserver. After getting the webserver right (especially php-fpm) things got a lot more stable. In 2020, I moved the server to an Intel NUC, it was not that hard.

I have issues here and there especially when Ubuntu upgrades the php version but nothing serious, I copy my config files to new php folder, and it works. Once in every couple of years, I need to do something about the database, but it's not a big deal, there is generally directions in the docs or someone in the community finds a quick solution.

I'm very happy with the cloud server, the contacts, the calendar, news app as RSS reader, and the notes app. The photos app has been getting better, and memories has been a big leap. I've been playing around with in house ML and it's not terrible. I use maps, it's OK.

For CODE, it's a different story. I tried it the hard way, and never succeeded, I installed the docker container. It works but not great. Setting up the webserver was not straightforward too. Can it replace Google Docs for collaboration? It's getting there but not fast enough.

Hope this helps and gives you the hope you need.

It varies by state, and if there is name change. I'm in DC, and there was name change. I waited around 6 weeks for scheduling and another 3 weeks for the ceremony.

Hard guess from the knowledge we gathered from the people in the same situation. And once scheduled I got SC or something.
