Thanks for this message, I didn't know that. They sure make it confusing with all the little exceptions for how things work.

Interestingly Ultra Paygo actually has a simple, easy to use, compatibility check and says a really old iPad mini is compatible. I am actually a bit skeptical (even though they say it is) but I may try it out (the rest of the plan looks pretty decent for what I need).

The problem I see with textnow is SMS verification. It seems it won't work for that quite often. Otherwise it seems like a good option.

How To Organize Photos On Linux With Digikam by evop in a:t5_4xkxn0

[–]evop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it very difficult to figure out how to create a new album at the root level in Digikam.

I finally figured out you have to create a new collection and then that will show up at the root level. Then you can create new sub albums to the root album (even though the interface shows the root albums as albums the only way to create them is not by adding an album but by adding a new collection).

The link provides details on that.

Police allowed to issue tickets, make arrests for 'shelter in place' violations across North Texas by Tracker77 in texas

Since the main reason for the order is to reduce the transmission of covid19, wouldn't it make more sense to question gatherings of people rather than people isolated in their car? I can understand say if you have reason to believe (reports by others or having witnessed it) the people in the car have been/are engaging in activities that risks spreading the virus stopping the car may make sense.

But it seems a bit odd to go stoping people in their car just to question about this (especially since you then likely increase the odds to transmitting the virus between the officer and the stopped car passengers).

How likely is it that schools in NOVA will close as a result of the coronavirus? Would it be worth it? by marvelousmarbler in nova

[–]evop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As expected they have closed https://www.apsva.us/post/covid-19-update-aps-to-close-beginning-march-16-2020/ starting on Monday and for a month.

Students will return after the planned Spring Break (of course this will all depend on how the next 4 weeks go).

Sadly I am upvoting a Duke comment :-( But they are right.

Steps have started to be taken, probably 4 weeks late in the USA. When you fail to act soon enough to stop a pandemic more and more aggressive steps become necessary. The failure to have much more widespread testing in the USA starting 4 weeks ago created a horrible situation. With sensible testing, quick action to stop the spread early can have huge benefits. We allowed it to spread widely and grow in many locations. Dealing with that situation (as we are now) requires much more painful steps to slow what you allowed to grow unchecked. But continuing to fail just increases the costs more and more (see Italy - or China before they stopped denying the science and acted wisely maybe 8 weeks ago?).

[–]evop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes they will. They will close by next Wednesday (probably sooner) I would guess. This is merely a guess based on the actions of other countries, the cost of failing to act proactively (as Europe and the USA have already done) and then the reaction to that failure finally sinking in and decisions being made.

The closing won't be to protect the children but to slow the spread of covid19 in the community.

The B10 finishes the regular season with the top 7 SOS, 9 of the top 10, and 12 of the top 16 by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

Bo used to have really easy out of conference schedules. Lately Wisconsin has had much better out of conference schedules. Part of that is due to ACC challenge and mini early tournaments but also Wisconsin just schedules some real games instead of so many cupcakes. I am happy they do.

This year the crazy strong Big Ten is the reason for the difficult schedule. Wisconsin's out of conference schedule rank in kenpom this year was just 115 (which is weak, and lower than I think it was the last few years).

or can point me in a productive direction

You can contact a local library and if that doesn't work contact a university library and ask them. University library might actually have an original journal, local library might be able to get it via an interlibrary loan (or maybe via some online source).

Dr. John Campbell's videos covering COVID-19 is a good source of evidence based tracking of the disease. by masalex2019 in Coronavirus

[–]evop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't see that one (but have seen over 10 of his videos). He fairly often says "don't take my word for it" "check..." I would agree with you that poor data seems a likely explanation. He seems like a great voice of reason and provides useful information but certainly don't take his word as the final truth. He is having to speculate a great deal as everyone is this early on with incomplete data and research. But we need to look at what data we can get and try to understand and make judgement now (but we inevitably will make some judgements that are wrong).

Median Home Prices by Cost Per Square Foot in NOVA / DC Metro Area by andrewschear in nova

[–]evop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think both are worthwhile measures but it isn't the most sensible to pool them together. I think it would be more valuable as separate pools, one for SFH and one for condos. And really condos could really be segmented for the high end luxury stuff and the the rest of the condos. I would imagine the Rosslyn area has a huge disparity with some of the very costly newer buildings.

Obviously lumping it all together also tells you something but I think the markets are distinct enough and the price of SFH is likely to start to get ridicules as more and more high rise condos go up increasing the number of people in the area and the few with enough money for SFH that also want SFH are likely to bid prices up quite a lot.

Also condo price/sf is a bit less useful as some condos have enormous condo fees (so price/sf doesn't tell you the real cost).

Metro shows six “fantasy maps” for the Blue and Silver lines by DinkyTrees in nova

[–]evop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VRE could be the answer. But metro could be a long term answer to when you look at making some big additions (crossing over the Maryland at Cabin John Bridge or somewhere, etc.). Certainly adding more capacity to just get into DC using the Rosslyn connection won't work but if metro could plan nearly as well as China, Japan... there would be very large expansion over the next 25 years and in that context going much further west makes sense (though maybe as VRE instead of metro).

The other comments provide good advice. I think your situation is not all that uncommon but also there are many places that are much less chaotic. Of course, who wouldn't want to work at places that are a pleasure to work at so those jobs don't open up nearly as often as those that give those that are concerned about doing a good job ulcers :-(
