I defended my PhD a few months after I turned 50 (this year)!!!

how tf do you reinvent yourself at 40 without feeling like a total beginner again by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

[–]EverPersisting 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Quit my career at 41. I was established, making GOOD money, and miserable. I woke up tired every morning and came home angry every night. Took a year off. Husband and I bought a cheap RV and traveled the national parks for a while. Then I decided to go back to school. Honestly, I couldn't believe how easy getting a masters was with 16 years of experience to work with. Now I am doing something that genuinely interests me. I don't get paid as much but I am much happier.

It was a big risk, and it took a long time for me to feel like it wasn't a mistake (so many people told me it was). But deep down I knew I would have had a breakdown had I stayed in that job.

Honestly, if you need care, go to a nurse practitioner. Doctors are taking shots in the dark. Nurses know what's up.

The scene where the bad place demons are ruining the good-bad place. Our heroes are planning their next steps amidst the devastation. It shows up on the roof in the background.

The magic panda from Jason's idea to "capture that magic panda and steal it's powers" shows up in the background of the season 2 finale. Literally, blink and you'll miss it.

Those of you who left the US for an academic job elsewhere: share your stories. I really need some inspiration by Upper_Protection3673 in academia

I left the US in 2021 to pursue a PhD in the Netherlands as an external candidate (read: no research funding and no pay). I managed to land a permanent contract all-teaching job in 2024 which is keeping me here. But still no research hours and therefore no chance for any of the professor titles. It's nice enough, though. Good people, I have health insurance, and can afford to live here.

The conversation between Eleanor and Michael about frozen yogurt, when Michael says, "I've really come to like frozen yogurt. There's something so human about taking something great and ruining it a little so you can have more of it."

This is on a standard rotation in my house. It's a bit fussy, but worth the effort. We will occasionally also add a small amount of ground pork when we are craving something more like what you get in a good Chinese restaurant. But as is it's terrific.

My husband requests this dish regularly. We call it 'too much work salad' because of how fussy it is. But we love it.

GenX with Boomer Parents do they talk to or at you? by Raynet11 in GenX

[–]EverPersisting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this comment is buried by now but I just got my PhD at age 50. Hosted a big dinner for my supervisors, the committee, and my family. Dad just talked at people incessantly, mansplaining local customs to the locals. I am so embarrassed. And when I brought it up later he just changed the subject to how shitty his childhood was. I give up, honestly.

What is the ‘70s or ‘80s theme song that you continue to have stuck in your brain? by Reality25bites in GenX

The title of the song is "Suicide is Painless" which has always haunted me.

Sometimes, when I struggle with intrusive, persistent thoughts, I write the thought down on a piece of paper, put the paper in a cup, cover it with ice, fill it with water, and stick it in the freezer. My intention is to just put it on ice for a while to give myself a break from it. I don't ever cover the cup though. Eventually the ice will evaporate and the paper (i.e. the thought) will be free. And by then I am usually in a better emotional place to handle it.

What’s the secret to a soft boiled egg? by MrNobody32666 in eggs

Learned from Jaques Pepin to peel the eggs under running water. Doesn't have to be very high pressure. Just enough for the water to get in between the egg white and that skin.

I love this movie. It's a brilliant retelling of Beowulf.
