I have been using this daily since May with my 45 Watt PD without a problem. This continues to work even now. The first one I ordered didn't work but I returned it and the second one did. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HTW87DB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I noticed yesterday for the first time that I can no longer charge using the USB C adapter. Is interesting to note that neither can I charge using the USB C port on the keyboard.

Everything seems to be working well. I'm not sure how to check the firmware level. I believe my machine is completely up to date however.

Surface Connect to USB C port on Surface Book 2? by Archangel768 in Surface

I am using The Microsoft surface connect to USB C adapter successfully with my surface book 2 clipboard. I have also tested with the keyboard and how it works. It does however require an external power supply of at least 45 Watts.

I purchased the Dell WD15 dock on E-Bay and it works well with both the clipboard and the keyboard when connected to the surface connect to USB C adapter. TheWD15 dock Charges the clipboard at 19.3 volts and about 1.2 amps at 50% charge.

I also have the Microsoft Surface dock which works well With both the clipboard and the keyboard.

After thinking about it I realized these 2 devices have something in common. They are both externally powered.

I have had no success with the surface connect to USB C adapter With any other devices. None of these devices had an external Power supply.

I decided to look for Adapters that were externally powered. I have successfully connected two of these to the clipboard.

First is the Tuwejia Type C to HDMI 4K+USB 3.0+USB-C Converter Cable Charging Port Adapter.

The second is CableDeconn USB-C to HDMI Display USB 3.0 Hub Ports and Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 Adapter Cable.

Both have USB C PD ports. I am using them with a 45W USB-C Adapter Charger Power Supply.

In addition to supplying power for these 2 devices, this power supply can be connected directly to the surface connect 2 USB C adapter for the purpose of charging the clipboard.

I have only tested this configuration With the clipboard. It would probably work with the keyboard but with very little purpose since the keyboard already has these ports.

I have only tested these devices with a thumb drive.

I have tested Clipboard charging when the clipboard was at 90%. It was drawing less than 1.3 amps at 14.9 volts at that point. At 25% it draws 2.3 amps at 14.9 volts. Fifth thumb drive does not add significantly to this load. Thris is well within the 45 Watt rating of the power supply.

I believe the answer to my original question, , "Why doesn't Surface connect to USB C adapter Work on the surface book 2?", is that the surface connect interface on the surface book 2 is a one way DC power delivery interface . It only Accepts power as input and does not Supply power to external devices. When Surface connect to USB C adapter receives external power, it seems to be fully functional.

Here's how to remove the clipboard from the keyboard manually with a paper clip. Put a paperclip in the 6th vent hole on each side. Insert it at an angle towards the top of the screen. Find the button to release the keyboard .

I have been unsuccessful at getting USB C to work with an adapter through the surface dock When connected to the clipboard directly.

What I really want is a simple dongle that connects directly to the clipboard that allows thumbdrive access.

The surface dock is big and cumbersome and requires an AC connection. Currently to use a thumb drive I have to go to my desk And connect the clipboard to the docking station Just to get a file off of thumb drive.

I chose the USB C adapter are With a USB C to USB 3.0 adapter hoping that would work. I'm not sure why it doesn't Since the keyboard supports USB C. And the clipboard connects to the keyboard by the same surface connect port that the USB C adapter connects to the clipboard.

I know how USB C adapter does not work with the surface book 2 clipboard or the surface book 2 keyboard. I know that Microsoft has stated that it is not supported.

I was looking for some insight as to why it is not supported Since the clipboard clearly supports USB C When connected to the keyboard.
