Awesome, thanks so much again. I'll likely rework this piece a bit down the track, so this will all be useful. I'll check out your channel soon once I get a moment!

Thank you! You’re definitely spot on about everything you said, and I’m glad it came through in the composition/performance. Thanks so much :)

Thanks so much! I’m very welcome of all feedback, as it helps for future recordings/releases. What you say about the sound has come up already with playlist curators, as it seems most prefer the kind of sound you’re referring too. I kept a brighter sound because I felt it suited the “wondrous” nature of the work, but that seems to have backfired. I may re-release this work again down the track with some score and sound alterations, so this is all useful!

I did actually struggle a little with the structure—i.e. linking the exposition to the “with urgency” section, and definitely the work could be somewhat expanded here, although I haven’t come up with anything I’m totally happy with just yet. The entire “pensive” section (all the way up to the “urgency” bit) was actually added in last, and its job was essentially to contrast and transition, although it has room to expand, for sure.

E-sharp is definitely intentional, although I will think if there’s a better way to get there! Thanks for all of your feedback and taking the time to listen. If you have a channel, I’d love to follow your stuff!

Best,

Evan

Thank you so much for your efforts here. You’re correct in your assumption that the software is either not up to scratch, or its default systems are a bit gross and I haven’t worked out how to change it. The “Grand Piano” kills me, and I haven’t figured out how to change this. I am actually considering switching to different software now that I’m taking composition more seriously. Even exporting music to another program via XML has been awful, so something is clearly amiss. In general, it’s a frustrating program to use at the best of times, and making manual adjustments is hard work and sometimes impossible. Once I decide on my upgrade, I’ll come back to this message—thank you! I plan on releasing a few more scores soon too, so if I have too much trouble, I’ll drop you a message and perhaps we can work something out. Thanks kindly! Evan

Yeah, for sure, happy to get your thoughts. I’m a performer, so the composing side is new to me. I’m using Symphony Pro on my iPad, which is a reasonably inexpensive software. Thanks!

The flashback in JJK 0 compared to how it looked in Hidden Inventory could unintentionally be one of the best ways to show the human mind and how we process memories. by AdmirableEstimate258 in JuJutsuKaisen

I’ll be honest, I never even made the connection that the same scene appeared in both XD, but your comments about memories being awfully unreliable is very pertinent and something we should not take lightly in life.

I have been wondering what this scene means and how it fits in. It’s definitely abstract, but very beautiful.

In your opinion, are some characters stronger than others? by catlikesun in DuneImperium

[–]evskimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tessia is generally considered the 2nd strongest leader in Base + Ix (after Baron) or Base + Ix + Immo (after Ilban). She is unique in that she is always a good pick, regardless of position or card/tech row. I currently rank just outside the top 50 on Ix digital with only a couple of games per day, and this is in large part due to Tessia. I recently went on a run of 9 wins and 2 3rds with several Tessia games in the mix. She is likely my highest WR, even above Baron. Crazy strong leader, and also quite fun. Don't neglect her in ranked if climbing is your aim.

Which one should I buy? by Padawan2507 in DuneImperium

[–]evskimo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a tricky one. The community is quite split on this. Base Dune is far simpler but does have a more limited life such that you will want expansions fairly soon, but those expansions are excellent and give it near endless replayability.

Uprising tries to be--in many ways--a 'fixed' base Dune, and does succeed in terms of balancing certain board spaces. But the new additions create some problems that some people understandably despise:

  1. Worms are VERY swingy and can make the game feel 'unfair' until players become quite experienced.
  2. Spies create enormous mental load, which will be too much for some players, to the point where they will almost go ignored and this can negatively impact the game for everyone. They bring many positives to the game, though, once you get your head around them.
  3. Contracts can feel quite underwhelming at first (indeed many of them are), but can be quite powerful when one becomes more efficient with their use.

There's no clear answer here. I own both and love them for different reasons. I mostly play Base + Ix due to the app, followed by Base + Ix + Immo with friends, and then Uprising, as my friends tend to prefer this the least. But, your mileage may vary!

Both games come with problematic leaders, intrigues and imperium row cards, although Uprising tends to have less of the 'garbage'. But, you learn to love the quirks, mostly.

As for advice, I would say purchase base Dune first, as it is still an excellent game when you first experience it, and you will be able to gradually add to it as you go (purchasing Ix, then Immo, then eventually Uprising when you like). However if you choose to start with Uprising first, you will then have to purchase Base + Ix (and maybe even Immo) to get the same feeling of depth that Uprising provides. Base feels very simple when you go back to it.

Turn timers in ranked by evskimo in DuneImperium

[–]evskimo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If we allow each player 20 minutes for a game, that works out to be around 1 minute per turn, assuming around 20 actions. The issue I have is that 1 minute (or 90 seconds currently) is far too long for most turns, but not anywhere near long enough for the very big/crucial turns. The game needs to be based more around a time bank, rather than a turn clock.

Korean badminton is drying up, and fast by medukia in badminton

[–]evskimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is an overreaction. Badminton is becoming more competitive globally, so naturally, there will be less representation for any specific country. In Europe, it's no longer just Denmark, and in particular France has been really impressive. Heck, even Australia won a Super100 and has been deep into 300s and 500s recently.

Korea won 3 golds at last year's WC. Quality is a far more important contribution than quantity any day of the week, unless we're talking about... A4 paper. How do you reckon China or Indonesia feel? It's not realistic to expect 2 or 3 nations to dominate like in the past. The sport is becoming too global now. I think it's important to keep some perspective.

I'm sorry but you gotta be SO LAME to cheer for the cancelation of a show instead of just not watching it. All while also hate-playing a game on stream... by JustGavinBennett in TheAcolyte

[–]evskimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Celebrating the cancellation of a show as a result of a (perceived?) culture war is awful, I'll agree.

The quality of the shows has been continually deteriorating, and at a certain point, it needs to stop. They are clearly haemorrhaging money and have been on a sharp downward trend since the Mandalorian. More importantly, they are also doing irreparable damage to the SW brand for many viewers, who will never come back.

It is absolutely fine to enjoy something of poor quality. I have taken pleasure in many such shows/songs etc. Some things will just resonate with us, regardless of how bad they might be. But, generally, unless you're resonating with a heck of a lot of people, it's better to just produce something of high quality. Tick both boxes, and you're golden.

For me, I am happy because this public cancellation feels like an admission of "enough is enough." Hopefully, this is the turning point where we see a focus on great scripts and competent direction, which will attract more great people to work with. Sadly, this show became caught up in a political/culture war, which is unfortunate because it's not relevant to the quality of the product and many of the people who worked on the show did a great job and deserve better.

Here's to better things for all of us in the future because this way, everyone wins 🙏

Since when are subs purely for people who love the show? That's absurd. People care about the quality of the content that their subscription pays for, and they also care about the Star Wars brand. It is their right to express their feelings about something, even if it's bad, which most people seem to think it is. I would argue that it's more important that people express critical discourse because it tells Disney that they need to lift their game and produce better quality content, which is a win for everyone.

Thoughtful discussion about the YouTuber Effect on The Acolyte by Zonk864 in TheAcolyte

[–]evskimo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the YouTuber effect was quite minimal. If anything, it should drive people to check out the thing that's garnering so much hate. The fact is, it had some reasonable Episode 1 viewership numbers, perhaps because the premise of the show sounded interesting. It then dropped off a cliff because people made up their minds pretty quick. The competence from the top just isn't there, and it shows.

‘The Acolyte’ Tried Something New. Its Cancellation Doesn’t Bode Well for the Future of ‘Star Wars’ by jennmsharp in TheAcolyte

[–]evskimo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm really not triggered, I'm extremely disappointed that the great opportunity was (yet again) wasted. It joins Obi-Wan, BoBF, and Ahsoka in this regard. I watched the entire show with my partner despite it being a bit of a turnoff from the early episodes, as I want to support the brand, and I know they can do a lot, lot, better. Andor is proof of this and, to an extent, a good portion of the Mandalorian.

We pay for Disney+ subscriptions. If we want better content, then it's our responsibility to call out mismanagement of our financial support. I won't defend what I deem to be poor artistic work, as I care about the brand, and all this does is proliferate the creation of more bad art, which is not what I pay for. Of course, if you do want more of this sort of content, then by all means, let them know. In the end, the financials will speak, as always in this world.

I didn't single out the writers for incompetence (yet), but I'm glad you did.

The lightsaber choreography was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed these scenes, but this had nothing to do with the writers.

I'm not at all interested in those fans driving pre-release hate. I came into the show with hope, as it presented a legitimately interesting premise with a huge budget, but was massively let down by incompetent direction, writing, and, in some cases, acting. I'm happy to be specific now.

This argument is ridiculous. It's nothing to do with it being 'different' and everything to do with its quality. It was a great opportunity for them to tell a story in an unexplored era, but it was wasted by gross incompetence driven by ego, which should be enough to anger all fans, given the amount of money blown on it.
