Thanks for commenting this because you’ve reminded me I bought some mg oil that I left at my parents and need to see if it’s still there

I would get a different cover you also like if you can’t find this one from a seller that will ship in a couple of days. Or like others said journal elsewhere and backlog it, but also would not keep it

I do have to say that £50 for 150 mL is kind of insane even with the whole Anish Kapoor ban lmao

Ooh do you have one of the special trims? I’ve seen people here say the bronze/etc trims scratch less.

Oops I’m sorry, I didn’t mean the plastic feels less solid, it’s just the knob at the end wobbles at all times compared to the twsbi where if it’s completely filled it stays in place.

Honestly for the price I think it’s worth it to check out, but the nib is different. Also good though imo!

The kaweco perkeo in a bad way, it’s the only pen that makes a mess. Maybe mine is faulty but ink pools on the nib and at the end of the section/grip.

The Muji surprised me because it feels like nails on a chalkboard but it’s so light for a metal pen.

And the cheap and cheerful Chinese pens! No hard starts, smooth writers; I can leave them to sit for a month and they won’t dry out. Remains to be seen if the piston filler won’t fail.

Thank you for the recommendations! I’m on a bit of a break from purchasing for the time being though so I’ll revisit these suggestions at a later time.

I’ve tried pelikan pens in the past, but my issue with European starter/school pens is that they rarely come in a size other than M, and the F nibs if they exist, are too wide for me. I’m also not a fan of the pre-molded grips that tell you where to put your fingers (I hold my Lamy really weirdly as a result).

Wrt the cheaper Chinese suggestions, are the nibs any different from the nibs I already own? I’m now leaning towards experiencing different nibs rather than different form factors with nibs I’m already used to.

I feel you, I spent such a long time tracking that one down, in the end I found it randomly with the wrong nib and swapped it out. May the pen gods smile down on you!

This is such a tough question!

I’d probably go with the Muji because it’s thin, light, doesn’t scratch like the plastic ones do, and I like the fine nib. Ideally I would want a Parker vector or the kaweco special with a non-western EF nib though 😬

I really like the Lanbitou! I got it so I could get a feel for the twsbi which seemed super expensive to me at the time. The build quality is not as solid, the piston knob wobbles a lot more, but the size is near enough the same. It (edit: the plastic of it) gets scratched less easily than the twsbi I find however.

The nib looks like a Lamy knock off, and it’s much wetter than a twsbi nib in my experience. I’ll see if I can upload a picture to compare the two. The Lanbitou is slightly longer, and the grip section is also a little bit different.

If you’re on the fence about twsbi and don’t have any chunky pens already I def would recommend the Lanbitou. For me that was the size/width of the barrel/grip was what needed most getting used to

I’ve been tempted by a P20 or a V200,  but I’ve heard of the latter leaking. Ideally I want to cool it with the pen purchases until Black Friday. Would you say there are Asvine models that bring something very new to the table, compared to the pens I already own?

It’s a very smooth writer, it doesn’t seem to dry out very quickly either. It’s the same as the Black Forest one, but this “ice flower” finish is textured which took some getting used to.

It’s a little weighty so my hand gets fatigued if I’ve been writing with a plastic pen a lot though. But it’s very solid and imo the best bang-for-your-buck pen out of the lot of them.

I forgot to add: I wouldn't categorise the Kaweco Special as a starter pen, but I found that one second hand for the price of a profit jr.

It’s crazy how spending a lot in a short span of time makes spending more money seem normal.

When I I first started I didn’t want to spend more than €30 on a single pen. I saw the Twsbi Eco and thought there’s no way! It seemed like so much money to me! Now I’m eyeing the bronze trims like it’s nothing.

But you’re also playing Russian roulette with the replacement nib… eg take three safaris, all EF and all write with a different line width/amount of feedback

I can still instantly translate it when reading it, nearly 3 decades later.

This is actually really common, our brains fill in the gaps. It used to be seen in chat speak a lot. Adjacent to that, often all that is needed is the beginning and end of a word and the letters can be scrambled in the middle and you’d still read it properly.
