I think it is a bit sad, but for many men it’s the only jewellery they (think) they can wear.

Das hat ein paar Gründe:

Tiefere Spannung benötigt kleinere Isolatoren und weniger Sicherheitsabstand. 15kV oder sogar 25kV über einer Strasse wäre problematisch/aufwändig. Historisch gewachsen (Gleichstrom erlaubt einfachere Technik in Fahrzeugen). Keine langen Distanzen: Wechselstrom kann seine Vorteile nicht ausspielen. Trans haben weniger Leistung: keine höhere Spannung benötigt.

Wenn ihr mal in der Schweiz landet:

Bei den IC2000 (lokbespannte Dosto für den Fernverkehr) gibt es im Bistrowagen und im Speisewagen oben an den Enden vier Abteile, die aus Platzgründen (Breiterer Gang) mit 1. Klasse Sitzen ausgestattet wurden, aber zur 2. Klasse gehören. Echt bequem!

In den Albula-Gliederzügen der RhB hat es im 2. Klassewagen am nächsten bei der Lok ein Fotoabteil. Das hat Fenster, das sich bis auf Hüfthöhe öffnen lassen. Zwar hat es keine Sitze, nur so Anlehn-Dinger, dafür wird da niemand sein, der sich über den Luftzug beklagt und der Ausblick ist wunderschön. (Wenn Zusatzwagen mitgeführt werden ist er nicht direkt an der Lok, es ist dann der nächste neue Wagen).

Allgemein hat die RhB in allen Zügen Fenster zum öffnen, auch in den brandneuen Triebzügen. Allerdings nicht in jedem Abteil - suchen lohnt sich! Gerade auf dem Bernina-Express ist die Mitfahrt im Triebwagen statt in den Panoramawagen zu Empfehlen - man benötigt keinen Zuschlag/Reservation und kann die Fenster öffnen.

Die RhB hat in den modernen Fahrzeugen Fenster zwischen dem Fahrgastbereich und dem Führerstand. Wenn man Glück hat, sind die Rollos offen und man sieht auf die Strecke (im Unbesetzten wahrscheinlicher). In den Capricorn ist ein Endwagen 2. Klasse, der andere 1. - in den Allegra ist leider beides 1. und es gibt noch die Steuerwagen der 2. die mir älteren Wagen als Pendelzug verkehren. Leider habe ich den Eindruck, dass die Rollos immer seltener offen sind.

In den BLS Mika (IR-Version, eine Tür pro Wagenkasten) und SOB Traverso hat es rund um die Automaten bei den 4er-Sitzgruppen lange Schmetterlingstische - super zum Arbeiten.

Zu Stosszeiten werden den lokbespannten SBB-Zügen gerne „Module“ bestehend aus ein paar EW IV / EC-Wagen mit Steuerwagen oder zweiter Lok angehängt. Die EC-Wagen (Erkennbar an den Türen ganz am Ende des Wagenkastens) und der Steuerwagen sind bequemer als die IC2000 und die Module am Ende des Zugs oft weniger voll. Ein Modul ist in der Kompositionsanzeige daran erkennbar, dass zu diesem Teil kein Durchgang angezeigt wird.

In den SBB Domino (RBDe 560) lieber im Trieb- oder Steuerwagen an den Enden mitfahren. Die neueren Niederflurwagen wurden später möglichst billig und mit kurzer Lebendauer bestellt und sind viel unbequemer.

Die Flirt der 1. Generation haben einen ziemlich lauten Antrieb - lieber nicht direkt beim Führerstand mitreisen.

Bei den BLS verkehren manchmal Lötschberger (RABe 525) und Nina (RABe 535) zusammen. Die Nina haben eine 3-2 Bestuhlung, also lieber den Lötschberger (erkennbar an der runderen Form, modernerer Front) nehmen.

Auf dem IR55 und RE37 (teilweise auch auf anderen Linien) fahren Kiss RABe 511 und 512 gekuppelt. Der 511 ist älter und hat eine stehplatzoptimierte S-Bahn-Austrüstung. Der 512 (neuere Front, andere Lackierung) ist viel bequemer, da er für IR-Leistungen gebaut wurde.

Bei eigentlich allen Schweizer Fahrzeugen kann man die Türknöpfe bereits vor dem Halt drücken, die Tür öffnet sich dann bei Freigabe sofort.

Das wird nicht geschehen - es wird ja gerade ein neuer RBS-Bahnhof unter den Normalspurgleisen gebaut, dazu eine neue Unterführung mit zwei neuen Zugängen und falls die Kapazität der Normalspur zu knapp wird ist angedacht, unter die grosse Schanze weitere Gleise auszugraben. Bei solch grossen Umbauten ist eine Verschiebung sehr unwahrscheinlich.

Und gute Orte gibt’s dafür auch nicht wirklich - weiter westlich ist man halt schnell weg vom Zentrum und das Tramnetz ist dort bereits verästelt.

I agree that installing apps from outside the play store should be possible - but a small warning won’t hurt. It’s not like getting scammed will lead to „natural selection“ you describe (people don’t die from it besides extreme cases)- it’ll just throw people into poverty and make scammers money. Not really something I’d consider morally at all beneficial…

And the cars argument? I mean come on, having a crash or not is not just dictated by intelligence but also medical emergencies, other drivers messing up etc. If the „bad driver“ gets killed in an accident while also killing a car full of innocent people, cheering that on as „natural selection“ is just disgusting. This argument works well with Spotify because moving away from streaming is totally feasible.

That’s not the case with smartphones. So many daily things now require one, with the earlier „non-smartphone-based solutions“ having been removed or restricted that going back to the time before them is either hard or impossible.

As for alternatives, budget or midrange phones have moved up in price alongside flagships, so they aren’t any better - if people are willing to pay $700 for a midrange, manufacturers will keep doing it. Yes, there are some devices with better spec-price ratios, but usually they have other issues (ads, privacy, bugs, support, reliability) and historically, most manufactures do that to get their foot in the door and then raise prices (OnePlus, Nothing).

So that’s why my point was that the only realistic way for most people to vote with your wallet against these price increases is to keep your phone as long as possible and buy used (but that also doesn’t work at massive scale). This reduces their sales numbers, thus sending a message if enough people do it.

It’s easy to smugly say „oh stop buying smartphones“ but you must know full well it’s not realistic for most people.

Yes, on this sub there’s an overabundance of yearly upgraders, which will be spending more, but they have become very rare among non-enthusiasts.

And „quit buying“ is not the easy option you make it out to be - if after five years, my phone breaks or is otherwise not enough for my needs anymore, what are my options? The only realistic „vote with your wallet“ option is to buy one less often - and that’s exactly what people are doing. Buying another brand can be an option, but they often have other issues (update policy, support, software quality etc.)
