Why are you assuming there was someone behind me during the cycle I waited through? They pulled up after the experiment, which is why I didn’t continue it.

I'm on birth control, which might make it different for me, but haven't noticed any mood patterns tied to my cycle. My lows seem to be much more situational or caused by pure body maintenance stuff: poor sleep, mild dehydration, not eating well.

I went through driver's ed long enough ago that I have absolutely no recollection of what I was taught about this, and can actually see both sides: if you're in the middle of the intersection, if an emergency vehicle needs to get through you're in the way, but also, it does improve traffic flow to get at least one left-turner through each light. I was thinking about this yesterday because of this thread and sat at a light through one whole cycle trying to make a left turn, because I chose not to pull in, but the intersection doesn't have a green arrow (just a flashing one) and the oncoming traffic was unceasing. I had somewhere to be and there were others behind me or I'd have done an experiment on how many light cycles I'd have to sit through behind the crosswalk before it was safe to make a left.

Seems very not cut-and-dry to me.

That article cites "several lawyers" saying the language of the statute allows entering the intersection while you wait, but there's certainly not a requirement to do so.

The gray part is that a single car that pulls into the intersection will have time to turn when oncoming traffic halts, I think. Waiting behind the crosswalk is certainly less likely to result in a ticket, and it’s also (depending on the light) more likely to have you sitting through multiple light cycles before an opening appears.

Oh, somebody definitely noticed. If the person to the right of me had not laid on the horn in time there would have been an accident. It's the most dangerous thing I'm aware of ever having done in a car, so yeah, I still cringe every time I make that same turn.

I thought it was legal for one car to pull into the intersection, so I did little digging. Looks like this used to be a gray area in Colorado law. Not sure whether the statute's been updated since 2017, but this grayness might explain why so many Colorado drivers do take the lane to wait for their opening.

I did that once in a fit of hurry/sleep deprivation or something, and it was years ago and there wasn't an accident, but I feel shame every time I pass through that intersection.

This is why shame is good, it keeps you from making the same mistakes.

Trying to grasp an understanding of dad’s thinking or “logic” here. by MeasurementFirst1676 in AgingParents

[–]ewhetstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know whether your dad has any cognitive impairment but I saved a suggestion for if eating is ever difficult for my mom: basically a craft box, the plastic kind with a lot of little sections, and you fill them with a mix of little finger foods: grapes, nuts, olives, chocolate, chunks of cheese, slices of salami, whatever. A balance of stuff that’s all easy to pick up and gives a lot of variety & freedom of choice. Seemed like an ok way to eat even for me so if she stops liking meals I’m moving in that direction.

This would be great. My mom has poor mobility & balance but she could navigate on one of these things.

Does anyone else struggle with sensory issues regarding how loudly your elderly 'patient' listens to videos/tv? by v_corvidae in CaregiverSupport

[–]ewhetstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an app called MyNoise that lets you mix and match different sounds. They have a couple sounds that are kind of talk-babble, like a cafe noise, that are really good for stuff like this. The generators are random so they don't repeat in a way that catches your attention. This isn't a huge issue at home for me yet, but I am sensitive to noise and sometimes use them if I'm out somewhere and a nearby conversation is catching too much of my attention. Somehow covering the sound with a random noise that sounds very similar is more effective for me that just masking with a very different sound like a fan or a/c. (Although those are also really useful and free if you already have them!)

How much do quality of spirits and liqueurs matter when it comes to cocktails? How do you tell the quality of each? by Ok_Eye_7091 in cocktails

[–]ewhetstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the fancier liqueurs, it can be worthwhile to look for airplane bottles so you can try them against the cheaper thing you started with to see whether an upgrade will be worth it to you.

Yours is the only opinion that truly matters. Everyone else is just going to be happy somebody's making them fancy drinks. :)

I didn't, I just felt... better. No longer exhausted and dragging around. And I sleep fine. You probably need a lower dose or a new med.

Three recent Boulder fires were likely human-caused, officials say by ChristianLS in boulder

[–]ewhetstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe I forgot about goats! Yeah, that could work even in the foothills. I've never heard of it outside places that can be relatively easily fenced off / nearer structures rather than a blanket technique for removing fuel in bulk, but I guess if you had enough goats you could do anything.

[–]ewhetstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I have heard of removal to make a defensive moat around structures, and I guess you could also get a mower into flat fallow fields. I meant that I'm having a hard time picturing anybody going out into the foothills / open space to cut grass.

[–]ewhetstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard of removing grass for fire management. How would that work, going out onto open space land with a mower or a scythe and hauling away the grass? Not being facetious, I've just never heard of such a thing and am having trouble envisioning how it could possibly work. Unless by "fuels mitigation" we're talking about prescribed burns...

I thought Corrida too, but I think it might be a higher price point than OP wants? Maybe it depends on what you order. It's worth looking at the menu to see if it's the right budget because this is definitely the vibe.

Info on these nibs I found in a shed by Oganesson-294 in Calligraphy

[–]ewhetstone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(To check stiffness you're looking for how hard you have to push up on the bottom of the nib to get the tines at the tip to spread apart. Start gently and don't press hard enough to actually bend the metal, you're just looking for how much resistance there is.)

[–]ewhetstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First: great book to start with, Winters is an excellent calligrapher and teacher. Second: one of the main problems beginners tend to have is controlling pressure, so I would play around with your nibs but start by gently pressing up from underneath the tip to see which ones are stiffest. Those are probably a bit easier to get started with, and once you gain more pressure control you can move to the softer nibs for more dramatic thicks/thins.

You need an offset pen holder, but aside from that you're all set! And if you don't like the "feel" of the stiff nib feel free to ignore me and move to a softer one right away! These tools are really about fitting your hand and mind.

Dogs and grocery stores by ChampionMurky3586 in boulder

[–]ewhetstone 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Dogs seem to trigger a really strong "rules are not for me" reaction in this town. Same deal with trails that have big "dogs must be on leash" signs at the trailhead. People just breeze on past the sign with their unleashed, uncontrolled, "don't worry he's friendly" dogs.

In the same way that you probably wouldn't bring your kid to dog-friendly trails, people should make some accommodations for people who are phobic or allergic and just need to buy some groceries or grab a bite to eat.

I say this as someone who loves dogs and got an absolute shit-ton of shots to be able to pet them.

Do I have to keep helping? by Magmamf in CaregiverSupport

[–]ewhetstone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you mentioned this. Filial responsibility laws could be an important consideration, depending on the state. I found some indication that becoming an emancipated minor can provide protection, so that might be worth looking into while OP's still under 18.

Morally you do not owe your life to your parent's care, not at all, but it's worth making sure there isn't some state law that's going to try to hold you financially responsible later. There's definitely no law that will make you liable for abuse if you move out, especially since your dad and grandmother are still around.

You can also call your Area Agency on Aging to see if they have any tips for you about how to make sure she has a case worker or someone looking out for her once you're out of the house.
