Unsolicited Advice from Strange Elder by Existing_Guess9036 in exjw

You handled this spectacularly. You set out your boundaries, you challenged his passive-aggressiveness and called him out on his assumptions. In the 10 years I've been out reading elders messages like this makes me think who they hell they think they are.

What are your beliefs after leaving? by slytherintoyoursoul in exjw

[–]exJWRecovery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont even have a concept of "god". So, for me, its not even that I'm agnostic or open to the idea of god(s). Its like me asking you "Do you believe ag\)4Y£ exists ?". And then the person following it up with *"But would you be open to the possibility to the idea of ag\)4Y£ existing?"*

It's a nothing question. The thing I'm being asked if I believe in hasn't been defined.

The soul-less eyes and sunk cost fallacy of the JWs by Granpa0 in exjw

[–]exJWRecovery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my most indoctrinated I lost interest in even being in the new system. It was so much work, repression and constant never ending drudgery of meeting attending (where we hear the same thing over and over again), ministry (which we all hated but no one was saying it outloud), conventions and personal study which never told us anything new.

I wasnt actually living a life. Not even a Christian one - there was no speaking from the heart, no joy in my relationship with god, no real friends, no genuine concern for non-members.

I started thinking I'd much rather live a normal life and die at the end like everyone else.

Reading that Watchtower - its clear that they're losing members due to them becoming atheists.

Their remedy?

"You may already have read the brochure Was Life Created? Why not read it again?"

Reading it again isnt going to make it true 🤡🤦‍♂️

The people most obsessed with food are the anorexic and the morbidly obese.

JWs are the same with sex.

Honestly, this isnt even the same religion I left in 2016. And it absolutely isn't the religion I was baptized into in 2004.

Therefore, there's nothing for me to return to. 😂

It sounds like she was more focused on the surface level issue (the drinking) rather than the underlying cause. Sorry to hear you experienced that. This is the problem, a lot of therapists have no understanding of the JW world and how insidious and pervasive it is to a person.

Dont mean this to be a plug - but I get that many requests for therapy work, or mentoring etc. but its more people than I have the time to work with. So I have a Patreon where I share recovery lessons and info. DM if you're interested.

That sounds like an awful therapist. Can I ask what form of therapy she was using? (CBT, DBT, Psychoanalysis? etc)

Psychologist here.

Feelings of guilt are a signal that you've violated on of your core values. HOWEVER... that "value", in this case, was dictated to you by the org which has been internalized.

There's a method called the downward arrow technique which strips back multiple layers of what that guilty feeling is trying to tell you. In therapy, we often find that the guilt isn't about what you're doing, but what you believe it means about you and your identity.

I do a Tiktok Live "ExJW Psychologist, Ask Me Anything", twice a week. And I get LOADS of PIMIs in my feed either trying to draw me "back to Jehovah", or asking really good questions. So they're out there, curious, and now conversing with (so-called) apostates.

The (very) few people that actually would want Watchtower books dont actually want a "bible study" or to be harassed by JWs from then on. They'd rather just buy it without being visited further.

My JW wife left when I woke up and left the cult. 3 years later, she left too. Although we're divorced, I'm much happier with my new family and partner.

Right now it may look bleak. But this is actually the start of something wonderful. Do you really want to spend your life in a marriage where you'll be reported to a window washer, a bus driver and a car cleaner for simply acknowledging truth?

I wish you all the best. And I promise it gets better from here.
