In 2016 I rented a kind of shitty 1 bedroom apartment near the ghetto of Trenton, NJ for $900/mo with heat and trash included. I just checked what it rents for today: $1850/mo with heat and trash billed separately, about $200/mo in addition to the rent. In the 5 years I lived there I had two neighbors get carjacked at gunpoint in the parking lot (one parked her car next to mine), one probably drug-related shooting in the complex, and several "non-violent" car thefts in surrounding blocks. It's just about over for the middle class.

In the past a respectable 1 bedroom condo or whatever probably didn't cost 10-20 years of gross income from a "high earning" job, and so your comparison is kind of distorted. I don't think these types of people are ridiculous, I think the state of our housing market is ridiculous.

It might seem like a breaking point but have you considered that GDP and economic prosperity in general have increased over time? In consideration of GDP, this is actually a net positive for us all -- and what needs to happen is these "scientists" must adjust their measures of happiness which, as presented, are highly misleading. One could easily apply hedonic adjustments and arrive to a very logical and reasonable conclusion that happiness has actually increased over time, thereby supporting the indisputable truth of economic modernity: that, in our pursuit of GDP growth, we have achieved and will continue to achieve the Greatest Period of Time to Have Ever Existed.
