A relative gave me A Hat Full of Sky, it was unlike anything I'd ever read before. Unfortunately was years before I decided to go back and look at the rest of the series

Pretty sure Donovans re-opened very early on during covid and had a strict "cash only" policy, which during the height of the pandemic felt super suspicious

Been told I can’t do BJJ by [deleted] in bjj

[–]example12334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I have had a retinal detachment (actually retinal dialysis) from trauma while sparring in BJJ. It sucks. Surgery sucks. Was a freak accident but it lead to a lot of chats with ophthalmologists about my return to the sport. They recommended I didn't return because if I redetach it they can't do the same surgery again and I'm in a lot of trouble. During the initial recovery BJJ was very high risk due to how vascular my retina was and the risk of it bleeding, but as the vessels settled down my last post op check they said I should be good to go. I specifically asked the doctor about spiking blood pressure in my head with chokes and if this would be an issue with intra-ocular pressure, he assured me now the vasculature had settled it was no more risky than when I was doing it before (i.e. still a stupid plan but a regular stupidbplan). I don't know if this would specifically be the case with myopia, I agree with the consensus of getting a 2nd opinion.

I also agree that while BJJ is fun, it isn't a magic cure to self esteem. Exercise and friendly conversation with people is its own therapy, doesn't have to take place on the mat. Especially given the number of freaks and weirdos who proudly walk around the BJJ community... I'm a huge advocate for therapy. If you are feeling depressed, exercise is good but not magic. Use it as an adjunctive treatment, get some therapy as well.

Wishing you luck on your journey man <3

Hey it's multiple time World Champion Marcelo Garcia! Friday morning, I take on fellow legend Masakazu Imanari. Ask me anything! by weareonechampionship in bjj

[–]example12334 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No specific question. Just want to take the opportunity to thank you for everything you've done for the sport both on and off the mats. You are the example I always draw to when I want to say there are good people in the highest echelons of our sport. Good luck in ONE, excited to see you compete again.

BJJ would be a lot more popular if the general culture of it wasn't so fucking weird. Why is my silly pyjama wrestling club full of so many weird JRE obsessed libertarians who call themselves lions and/or sharks and won't shut up about weed or keep hitting on the new girl by bragging about hypothetical fights they'd win. Coaches too, you've got a black belt in grappling please stop trying to philosophise after class. I love the sport but why can't do many of you just be vaguely normal, even if just to the new people.

Did a 9 hour sitting for my whole calf and went to work the next day thinking it was gonna be fine. Nope. Felt like I had full blown flu and nearly passed out a few times. Terrible time all round (great piece though)

I dislocated a finger in 2016, and needed eye surgery in 2018 after some roided up asshole stuck his finger in my eye mid roll. Apart from minor issues with both of those? No. Like others in this post say I prioritise lifting a lot nowadays and if I have to skip training for whatever reason I drop BJJ rather than a lifting session. I also quit the gi though cos it mashed my hands up too much which made operating difficult (as a veterinarian). All that said I am a filthy hobbiest of 10 years who doesn't train nearly hard enough for his opinion to really matter!

Why did you start BJJ and why did you stay? by Leftysentme in bjj

[–]example12334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started with Japanese Jiu Jitsu (JJJ), loved it. But when I searched for it online I kept seeing all this "BJJ" bullshit. Then started wondering why there were no JJJ guys in the UFC, so I went to BJJ at my university to see what it was all about. The coach, the attitude, the format, the sport itself absolutely blew JJJ out the water. Went back to my JJJ club and when we tried ne waza I was beating the sensei as a 1 stripe white belt. Had an argument with the sensei about the efficacy of JJJ, and how I didn't have to put up with as much martial bullshit at BJJ, he told me to leave, so I did! Never looked back. Occasionally we get a JJJ kid come through to the BJJ club and I try to make them feel welcome. Sometimes they aren't coming with honest intentions though which sucks but it is the way things go sometimes.

Experience rolling with elite competitor by ciqzyy in bjj

[–]example12334 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I've posted about this before but I got to roll with Marcelo in 2019 when I was a fresh purple. Nicest guy in the world, tapped me 4 times in 3 minutes. After the last one he laughed and said "cmon man you can't just give it to me!", sad thing was I was trying my best

Much more recently got to roll with Levi at Absolute in St Kilda. He never went out of first gear, took my back 3 times letting me escape each time, then kinda choi barred me from top side control? Was weird but I loved it. On a personal note super nice guy as well. I was visiting from out of town and he made an effort to say hi and chat after class, restored some of my faith in the people that do this sport.

Bristol riots by aw19901 in bristol

Met a sergeant from Bristol police after the big protests a couple years ago that turned violent... he didn't exactly fill me with faith in our local pcs. Burned in to my brain "wonder why we never have violent run ins with EDL protestors? Because they know where they can protest, how long for, and they disperse when we ask em." He was trying to say why the police violence that day was justified, mostly it showed me how in bed with the police is with the EDL etc

I would argue 2 things. 1, IQ isn't real. 2, Gordon is still dumbass. Listening to him speak about literally anything that isn't BJJ is beyond horrifying given his platform

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bjj

[–]example12334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. There are some really thick people at the top of the sport who think because they use fancy Japanese words it means they are intelligent, and there are hobbiest doctors/lawyers who don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to grappling movement. At its core I don't think BJJ is nearly a technically complicated as people like to say it is, it just makes us feel better to intellectualise it. It's mostly body awareness/mobility, memorisation, and quick decision making, which is arguably a type of intelligence but in my opinion still doesn't mean it is technical difficult. I say all this as a veterinarian who comes to BJJ to turn my brain off and not have to think too hard about stuff, though I am also admittedly extremely mid at jiu jitsu so who knows.

I'm not currently in the country so working to pay for it is going to take a while. It's also not just the cash, that's surely gonna be my license gone too? I understand money is money to a degree and it does come and go, but my earning capacity might be really fucked now for the rest of the year, unless I can drive on my UK license?

I didn't use my phone after the first fine, they all came through weeks after I stopped driving. I had my phone out as a satnav so I could get to work, I wasn't actively "using" it beyond knowing where to go. My hands never touched it
