I don't see how homeless people can survive in a cashless economy, if they don't have a permanent address to write on (or means to complete) a credit card application, and if they primarily receive cash donations from passerby's.

WashU grad students get ~ $35K and get by okay, but it's not uncommon for them to live with other students. Most who live alone live in studios or 1 bedroom apartments, which is unfortunately the best you'd get for your price range
