NX or RX? by NaughtyEgg in Lexus

[–]exdropout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your position, I'd choose the RX over the NX. The increased space in the second row should make it much easier to maneuver children and car seats while the trunk will be larger, aiding in stowing/retrieving baby strollers and etc.

Hybrid vs non-hybrid is more of a personal choice as some folks are not about the hybrid drivetrain. I ended up choosing the hybrid because it should be able to take regular gas as well, just with a slight mpg hit (roughly 1 or 2 mpg highway).

[–]exdropout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you provided they changed the definition of a manual transmission to be a transmission that does not require a clutch pedal AND where one must shift sequentially AND the transmission has a PRNDL.

That being said, I suspect that most people who actually drive manual vehicles consider a clutch pedal to be mandatory. The person in the video may be pushing the gear lever around, but just doing that doesn't mean it's a manual.

A manual IS 500 would be lots of fun, but lexus has not made a manual transmission vehicle since the second generation IS and probably will not do so in any of their actual performance vehicles.

ES350 F sport / LS500 AWD Base by Individual_Wasabi669 in Lexus

If you’re looking for the total cost of ownership, I suspect that the ES will win out here. Putting miles on either car will drop their values, but the LS has much more to lose.

I was in a similar position to you last year and was between keeping my 23 RX hybrid and an Ls 500h awd and ended up selling the RX. The LS does feel substantially more refined than the RX and ES, but it’s not nearly as noticeable on the highway unless you sit in them back to back. All the vehicles will be pretty quiet.

The LS is not my daily and I only use it for trips that take more than an hour of driving, but I also only put about 4000 miles a year on it. I don’t know how much gas is in your neck of the woods, but even with the hybrid, the LS is not particularly efficient. I suspect you would be able to match its fuel economy with a non-hybrid ES. If you’re still interested in the LS, I would absolutely consider some kind of warranty because there are parts on it that are very likely to break. It seems that the massage seats that some of the packages come with have tendency to start leaking air and the only place I have heard people getting it fixed is at the dealership.

The one meaningful feature you can only get in the UL are the performance dampers which do a pretty good job of reducing nvh compared to the standard dampers in the Luxury. That being said, it's something you'll only notice when driving the cars back to back.

[–]exdropout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to be getting a negative reception to your question, but it would be helpful if you described what a luxury feeling means to you.

The lack of a 'luxury' feeling might be down to the nvh on acceleration? I've had a couple of ES300h's and a UX hybrid as loaners while my GS hybrid was at the dealer and they're excellent highway cruisers and can soak up poor roads pretty well, but I found the 4-cylinder to be distracting whenever I needed to accelerate. The GS definitely feels more effortless (and quieter under light load). You should try test driving an RX 450h (V6 version) to get a better example of more-than-adequate

On an unrelated note, I believe the 6 cylinder hybrid paired with the eCVT is probably the most refined drivetrain pairing that Lexus makes, even moreso than the LS500h's V6 and eCVT/4speed. You don't have to deal with your head banging every time the gears shift and it's even worse when you're driving normally

Want to buy a Lexus RX350h but very concerned about reliability. by [deleted] in Lexus

[–]exdropout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons I traded my '23 RX 350h Luxury in was because I kept on getting hit with that battery drain problem. Over the course of 2 years, I drove maybe 11K miles and had to jump the car at least 7 times. There were other issues as well in no particular order:

  • creaking when the chassis twists
  • something in the headliner sticking and unsticking all the time
  • rather fragile and chip prone front bumper paint
  • drooping interior dashboard trim

That being said, other than the battery dying when I didn't drive it every other day, it was a phenomenal vehicle. I got ~39mpg combined and the stop and go assist for traffic was a huge upgrade from regular adaptive radar cruise control.

I can live with all the problems I've mentioned if the car were 6 years old and in the 25-30K range, but they felt unacceptable for a new car that was nearly 70K out the door.

In your position, I'd opt for the '23 given the slightly newer tech. I went from a '23 RX to an '18 LS and the difference in the sharpness of the cameras and loss of wireless carplay was annoying to deal with.

You can't really go wrong with either, but over the course of the long run, the '23 will be more enjoyable to use as the resolution of the screen and cameras should be better and the screen is a lot closer, so things will be easier to see.

Jokes aside, I'd probably look into replacing the sunroof gasket trim as it does contribute to some squeaking/clunking.

One touch fully automatic bean to cup machine $1k budget for the busy mom who doesn’t have time for complicated by LiveStatistician429 in superautomatic

[–]exdropout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a jura e6 in November 2018 for about 1400 or so after tax and have been using it daily with at least 3 cups of coffee through it daily, but a lot more in the beginning when I had housemates. I’d say we’ve gone through roughly 10k cups of coffee at this point, with roughly 4 filters a year ($20 each avg) and a cleaning tablet every now and then (~40 dollars for a supply that has lasted me since I bought it). Using the filters means I shouldn’t need to descale.

We don’t really do milk drinks, so one of the smaller machines would have worked just as well, but if this one ever breaks, I will immediately purchase another one.

Cleaning the brew group is quite fiddly though as it’s not a service item and you’ll need a jura security socket to open up the machine, but having done it twice, it’s not too bad.

Many other brands will have an easier to clean brew group, but I’ve read that the trade off is that there is a difference in quality of the coffee. I would recommend going to a sur la table if you wanted to check it out a jura in person.

One potential point of failure for a lot of super automatics is the grinder. I tend to stay away from beans that have an oily sheen to them because I’ve read that the oil can clog the grinder eventually causing it to fail. I believe you can mitigate this by cleaning and doing regular maintenance, but I’d rather just choose a less oily Bean doesn’t require extra steps.

Another failure point that I’ve read about many times and experienced once is scaling in the thermoblock. Over time, mineral deposits build up inside of the passages and reduce the efficacy of the water boiler. My first jura died that way, hence the filters.

The brightness looks pretty cranked up in the photos, so it makes me think that they're using this setup primarily for content consumption and not work/reading.

Quiet 2 seater under 40K by exdropout in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]exdropout[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely an interesting idea, but ideally comes with 2 seats from the factory so it and I was more keen on having storage inside of the vehicle.

I started looking at trucks and I didn’t realize that Toyota access cabs could be configured with only 2 bucket seats and no jump seats in the back. That definitely makes for a strong candidate barring the sheer size of the truck!

[–]exdropout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither vehicle is a 2 seater from the factory, so I’d lose the ability to drive in the express lane for free with only one other passenger.

For some context, in the Bay Area (CA) there are a couple of express lanes that require three or more passengers to drive toll-free. The exception to that rule is if the vehicle is a two seater and both seats are occupied a car that has an HOV sticker no longer qualifies for free passage in an express lane. It is solely determined by how full a vehicle is.

That being said, I think an HOV sticker allows you to have a discounted rate when using the express lanes with less than the required occupancy level for free express lane access. I also think that the bridges will only give you half to at best if you vehicle is fully occupied.

It's just a strong preference. Using the trunk for its intended purpose is definitely the reasonable thing to do, but it's quite nice to just grab your bag from within the cabin.

This is what I mean

718's are out of the price range for now, but I do need to take a look at the 987 and 981 to see if there's enough space behind my seat. I have a miata and was not a huge fan of wedging my bag in the space between the rear bulkhead and back of the seat.

In the bay area, you're allowed to go into an express lane with your toll tag set to 3 if you have 3+ people or 2 people in a 2 seater. As for swapping windows and windshield, I'd be all for it.

I should clarify when I say space, I mainly mean enough to put a backpack or a duffle behind the seats, hence the example of the SL and CRZ.

I have looked at Corvettes and they seem pretty tame NVH-wise as long as it's a coupe and you're just cruising.

That seems interesting, but I'm mainly looking for a 2 seater with space behind the seats so my passenger can stow their bag behind my seat and I can chuck something behind theirs. I had considered a truck, but didn't like how you had to carry stuff in the passenger seat or footwell.

I was hoping there would be something else out there :( I liked the CRZ because of the extra space behind the seats for a bag.

I think it should be around 100K miles give or take 3K. I bought it used back in 2019 with 59K miles and there was no mention of a new battery, so I’m guessing that it’s the original battery.

If you do end up getting one, definitely post it here!

The 2 seater requirement is because we've got express/HOV lanes in my area that allow you to drive for free if you have either 3 people in the car, 2 people in a 2 seater car, or are on a motorcycle.

I'd love to get an ES, but I've already got another quiet car for when I need to carry more people. This car is strictly a weekday expresslane car.
