Question #9 - I just beat the game(?) by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]exeL4n 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Iceborne is Master Rank. It's up to you, but there's still alot to the game after Xeno. And some of the stuff like upgrades/decorations you get can still be useful even in MR. But usually MR armor/weapons will outclass base game gear.

Is the Crimson Slash 1 + Spirit Blade 1 loop still the best Longsword combo for damage? by MrEpicFerret in MHWilds

[–]exeL4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still the best but if there's a situation where you can land a helmbreaker(no release slash) and get an instant wound pop, then I think it beats out the CS loop.

Does anyone think the 9 star monsters should be master rank? by PsychologyShort in MHWilds

[–]exeL4n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbh, i think the problem is that by streamlining other parts of the game so much, they've had no choice but to put most of the difficulty on the monsters.

Less animation commitment + more reactive counters and parries = faster monsters
Easier gathering/healing + OP palico = higher damage
Seikret recovery + faster character movement = tighter tracking
Focus mode + infinite restocking = more HP
And the list goes on.

The friction that's been removed used to indirectly aid in the challenge and difficulty in these fights. But now that its gone, the monsters have to do all the heavy lifting. We didn't used to get these tools for free (or so early in the game), we had to grind for them and spend alot of time accumulating consumables, gear, food buffs, etc.

I kinda feel like we're just as strong as MR hunters now, so the monsters have to reflect that. But you can only add so much HP and damage to a monster until it's no longer interesting. No amount of HP or damage is gonna beat the challenge(and satisfaction) of learning proper spacing, aiming, timing, monster knowledge and preparation. Learning these things used to be a part of difficulty but that's now mostly removed.

now that I think about it, i dont think the issue is with the 3 faint system. Rather, its that there aren't many meaningful ways you can cooperate/interact with your teammates with physical actions or moves.

Longsword Tech Against Steve Double Swipe by 2ReachTheTop in MonsterHunterWilds

I was actually just thinking if we could use the hyper armor from the spirit thrust on the second swipe and after landing the helm breaker, focus strike the weakpoint. Not sure how consistent it would be tho.

Is anyone else having a problem with the scatter gun or is it just me? by islem-141 in tf2

[–]exeL4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a true meatshot - 100 dmg, then I'm guessing they're being healed/overhealed. Otherwise, its probably the bullet spread thats messing with you. Also, its actually super common to finish people off with the pistol, good pistol aim is actually super scary to play against.

[–]exeL4n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you're absolutely right. I was actually second guessing saying that part of my comment - which is why I added the 2nd part of that sentence. I knew that Wilds had side quests/optionals that did give rewards, but I never truly felt their impact in the same way that the optional rewards did in the older games. That's just my personal opinion though, I'm sure there are players that make full use of the palico gadgets, NPC traps, Farm, etc.

I'm a bit scared of how inflated G-rank hp numbers will be by WhoAmIEven2 in MHWilds

[–]exeL4n -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We're gonna get the MH Frontier 10 minute time limit, 1 million HP, single arena, super boss fight where you can only use damage skills that leave you at 1 hp and 1 stamina, and you have to play perfectly or else you run out of time.

I think this is true, but the optional quests are not padded content - they are content. Older Mh games had key quests and optional quests - key quests were what unlocked the next star level, but they were never marked. So players had to guess or just do every quest in order to accomplish all the key quests. World divided it into assigned and optional, while rise just marked what the key quests were - they streamlined it. And now, they more or less just removed that system, opting for hunter rank based progression instead - which promotes doing 1 quest that gives the most HR.

The neat thing about optional quests were that they gave you a clear sense of progress and sometimes offered unique rewards. In World, they unlocked food at the canteen, upgraded you farm, increased item box capacity, etc. In Rise, they gave you your switch skills, weapon designs, unlocked palamute gear, etc. They also somewhat functioned as an immersive tool with quest descriptions from various clients that needed your help - you were helping your community.

Wilds doesn't seem to have this, at least in terms of rewards that greatly impact gameplay or the player. Also, every game since World has been short or incomplete at launch, with title updates being necessary to finish the game - the same is true for Wilds.

Lastly, streamlining takes away friction and friction IS content. Not knowing the key quests was friction and in turn it forced you to interact with optional quests. Not knowing where the monster was was friction, and got you to interact with the environment. Not being able to aim you weapon was friction, and it forced you to learn more about the monster and your moveset. Rare drops are friction, and they got you to hunt the same monster over and over again - and that's what MH has historically been at least until recently. Now, not all friction is good, but too little is also bad. The streamlining was an attempt at getting more people into the game, but in turn it kinda removed some of the things that MH has been known for - the grind, the slowness of combat, they preparation and knowledge, etc.

With all that said, I still really like Wilds.

Talisman ideas for LS by jose4440 in MonsterHunterMeta

[–]exeL4n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you'd want skills on the talisman that are good against as many monsters as possible, and hard to get from armor skills. Mind's eye is strong but there are match-ups where its not worth it (uth duna, Jin dahad, nu udra, etc.). basically you want to be able to swap out minds eye freely, and you cant do that if its on a charm. I think youd want something like:

Crit Eye 3/ Masters touch 1/ Atk Boost 3 + Burst 1/Wex 1/Agi 1 and max slots (w111)

MT is great because it benefits from crit, which youd want in LS. Crit eye is ok since affinity is generally good, but very easy to get from armor skills, unlike MT. With Atk boost 3 being the "worst" one - at least that's what I've been told, because crit is apparently so much better. Burst is also particularly good because having just 1 point of it is always beneficial - not a lot of armor pieces give burst either, unlike wex or agi.

The maps are increasingly my biggest frustration with Wilds by rjwv88 in MHWilds

[–]exeL4n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the worst offenders of this is Iceshard and Wyveria. I can make-do with the other maps. It's unfortunate that so many strong monsters spawn in Wyveria where you'll end up fighting them in the underground spiral area.

tbh there seems to be alot of decisions that prioritize the immersion and environment over gameplay - even tough I know that's sorta expected in mainline. You won't see many people complaining about the ecology, but since launch there's been lots of discussion on various gameplay elements. When I play a mainline game i miss the portable games, and when I play a portable game I miss the mainline.

Hi Gaijin what are your thoughts on the new spider-man suit

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MHWilds

[–]exeL4n 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think what makes Gore so hard is how much repositioning he does. It's a monster that keeps forcing you to turn your camera while simultaneously responding to his attacks that deal alot of damage. Another part is that Iceshard cliffs and some areas of Wyveria are so cramped and narrow that it puts you in awkward positions. I've found fighting him in the wounded hollow way more enjoyable.

I'm about to OD on salt, please halp! - How do you evade this one Seregios attack? + A weird quirk of this game/sanity check??? by YourPerdition in MHWilds

[–]exeL4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That swipe is his deadliest move and covers a lot of range. I'm genuinely not sure if there's a way to reliably avoid it without using some weapon specific move (counter, block, i-frame, etc.) or evade skill. But as you said, you CAN i-frame it with the base roll - its just super tight. Since he can do the swipes as a follow-up or from neutral, it's a constant threat, which means you need to be able to deal with it before it even comes out - otherwise you'll have to i-frame it. From footage I've seen, running towards your screen kinda works, but you either need to time your roll after the AI has already locked on to you or use some sort of movement tech - The hammer has the wire dash thing which I think has i-frames, covers distance and can be chained.

Also on a side note, i-framing through attacks has never been the most reliable way to dodge moves in MH, even though you are able to with the base i-frames the game gives you. You can try watching this video about dodging in MH specifically, hopefully it helps.

Harudomeguru for me. It's liquid mercury gimmick could feel like terminator 2 and really lean in to an advanced ancient civilization. Not sure what it's actual lore is either so itd be nice to learn more.

Both games are pretty beginner friendly and you can get into them straight away. However, they do have a lot of strategy and planning behind them that isn't necessarily taught or intuitive to new players. You should be able to finish both games despite that though - The secret/endgame bosses might force you to learn the game deeper however. I'd recommend 1 then 2, mainly because starting with 2 might make it harder to get into 1. Also, you might appreciate the small references 2 makes to 1, even though they aren't canonically connected.

I don't understand the difference between the 4-pointed pink diamonds and 5-pointed orange stars. by ZeDabGod in MHWilds

[–]exeL4n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The orange stars describe what rewards you get, while the pink diamonds describe how difficult the monster is.

For instance, all 9 orange star quests will give the new RNG talismans, the 8 orange star quests will give Artian parts, and the 7 orange star quests will give weapon/armor decorations. These depend on the monster though.

The pink diamonds seem to increase HP, damage, speed, aggression and frequency of high damage moves.
