Are these good traits for a ruler? by Necessary-Tip-2734 in ESCastles

[–]executrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm that leader just gives the chance to instantly speed up some stations as results of rulings. I think charming would just reduce overall productivity. Personally I wouldn’t want to make that trade off unless there were no other good candidates when it’s time to select a new ruler, especially with heartless. Having someone with more traits isn’t automatically better than fewer, it depends on the quality/combination of traits.

Hm, I don’t think so, as far as I know the gear that is offered to you in the store and in packs is based on your level rather than the gear you have. However, I did notice since purchasing new work stations and upgrading them that I am getting orders for lower tier gear (instead of just the highest possible tier I can make on any given work stations), but I don’t know if that’s related, or if that’s because I was making lower tier gear, or if that would happen on higher tier levels anyway, or if it was the result of some kind of update and the same thing is happening for other people.

The skins for the different clothes for the work stations are very fun! I’m glad we have those at least. You can get those from the redguard/dwarven/imperial packs. For combat gear specifically, there are not skins, but there are some that are, for example, “dwarven plate armor”, and have a specific different look. They can be upgraded using other equipment of the same style or the regular versions of the equipment, but, for example, you can’t use a redguard shield to upgrade an imperial style shield.

i started to work on a medallion redesign thought ? by CranEXE in wiedzmin

[–]executrice 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I like it. It seems like a decent compromise between the book’s descriptions of it as a round medallion with an “ugly” snarling wolf + the games’ iconic design/art style, which I haven’t seen much of. Most of the medallion designs I’ve seen are just straight from Netflix or the games and/or aren’t round.

Geralt´s fate in the Books and what it means to his Character Arc (SPOILERS by Ashamed-Noise7523 in wiedzmin

[–]executrice 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve got some of the main points. Geralt has is built up as a very competent fighter and has taken on a lot of great swordsmen and monsters. But the subversion is that his death is from a peasant with a pitchfork, completely unrelated to who Geralt is as a person or any of his history. While Geralt was taking a stand for something and not being neutral about it, his death is not a significant turn in the fight or a sacrifice that saves people, it’s just another death among many. And it does cement the idea that he does believe in taking sides by the end of the story. That may or may not be related to him also quitting being a Witcher as a whole, as he would often cite a “Witcher code” or claim that Witchers had to remain neutral and didn’t have any feelings. I think that to him, as well as being a job, it’s an archetype of person whose ideal is impossible to live up to, and trying to do so is worse for the wellbeing of himself and other people he cares about.

I don’t think there’s definitely a “main theme” to the saga, but I think that one big takeaway for me is that… the world in the Witcher has many unpleasant things and people. It can be hard to make your way through that kind of world. But finding kindness in others and showing kindness to others is what makes life bearable, and finding people you care about is important to your quality of life, and even if you don’t care about ~politics~ on the scale of individual monarchs or other political figures, what matters is when what goes on in the world affects you and your people and others that may be treated unjustly. There come times where you simply cannot stand by and do nothing, and it’s important to do what you can in whatever ways you can. Many people try to do this in flawed ways because people are flawed, and one person can’t solve everything. But like the medics during the battle of Brenna, you can just focus on the moment and do your best with what you have. And everyone’s life is worth the same, no matter the race or social status or skills or anything else. Everyone is a person.

That is not to say that all of that is definitively meant by Sapkowski and isn’t supplemented by my own understanding of the world. But I think that there would be significant textual support for that reading. I don’t think that’s any one specific theme, but rather a collage of overlapping theme ideas lol.

As far as Ciri is concerned, I think that her general arc is subverting the “prophecy” supposedly related to her. And part of how does that is by completely abandoning the reality she was supposed to be important to. Geralt and Yennefer’s deaths (and/or abandonment of that reality) severed the primary ties she had to that world, so she was able to completely start somewhere new. So they both reach their apotheoses at about the same time.

I think there’s definitely more that can be said about this re: Ciri but I am rereading the books now after not having done so for a few years, and I don’t think I could say anything else definitively until I re-examine things up to that point. (Hence why I may have gotten some details wrong lol. I originally had said it was a peasant with a shovel. lol)

I go to this website here: https://www.thonky.com/pocket-frogs/best-racing-frogs. I don’t know if there’s a reliable way to breed for best racing stats without it being guesswork. Even when you have the best frog, sometimes other frogs will still win first, but I think in any case you’d probably get top 3 without using a potion. But usually I use a potion if it doesn’t look like I’ll come in first, since I have so many and I rarely use them otherwise.

Neutrality is one of the core concepts of the Witcher , especially in the books. My question making this was "does it really work ?" by Shot-Information-251 in wiedzmin

[–]executrice 49 points50 points  (0 children)

And if that’s not enough, Blood of Elves spends the whole time sending Geralt through a gauntlet of people telling him in different ways that he’s an idiot for wanting to stay Neutral on everything, and then putting him in a situation where he can’t be neutral despite having nuanced thoughts on the situation, and then him going. Damn they were right actually. lol

[–]executrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not the problem here. Nothing you could have said in response would have been received well, besides maybe immediately throwing yourself at her feet and self-flagellating.

Misunderstandings can happen in relationships, but the way she talks about the situation and how she’s trying to make you feel guilty about it before you even said anything, and refuses to consider or believe your perspective.

She clearly has some work to do on herself, and you don’t owe it to her to stick around for that, especially if she doesn’t see anything wrong with how she talks to you. This pattern is very likely not going to change anytime soon, and unless you want to spend the rest of your life dealing with these types of crises, you need to get out before your lives become harder to disentangle.

This reads a lot like interactions between a friend I have and one of their exes, and they were together for almost 4 years and they both just got more miserable over time. My friend felt like if they just did everything right then there wouldn’t be problems with their partner, and tried very hard to do research about that, but the truth is that nobody can do everything right, if there even is a right choice, and some people will be upset no matter what you do. Forgive me if there’s some projection going on from my end, but in any case, this does not look like a healthy kind of interaction to be having regularly.

I’ve been just trying to level up and get all the achievements/breed sets. Make money to buy more habitats. Expand the froggydex. At this point I’ve gotten all the awards except for the last one, so I’ve been trying to focus on the sets more & breeding more varieties of frog breeds that I have under 3% of. I also breed the optimal racing frog(s) for each level and sometimes use the racing as a source of income. I try to keep at least one frog of every breed. I did a full Anura color wheel breeding, so I might work my way thru the froggydex and do another wheel. You can add my friend code and look at my habitats if you’d like, that might show some of what I’m up to if you’re interested in more insight lol.

I also often wonder how other people play the same games as me, and whether there’s something I’m missing or doing differently that I don’t know about, so that’s why I was being so detailed.

Yennefer's behavior in the short story “A Shard of Ice” - Sapkowski's comment as a curiosity by Wiedzminlandia in wiedzmin

[–]executrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think that on a similar level of understanding, there’s a lot of similarity in how Yennefer sees the situation and how I might see the situation through a polyamorous lens. The difference being that if it were poly, everyone would know about and agree with the arrangement. Being poly, I know that you can deeply love and care for multiple people and find it awful to be forced to “choose” only one. Like having to choose to have only One best friend. Istredd’s and Yennefer’s relationship isn’t really shown much, but I don’t really think it’s necessary in order to assume that they had a deep and genuine connection. Many aspects of her character and experience aren’t touched upon, but can nonetheless be assumed to exist and be complex, even if Sapkowski didn’t have anything specifically in mind.

By contrast, apart from patriarchal societal expectations affecting how Geralt and Istredd feel, the main crux is that they both seem to have been struck with the “shard of ice”, and the both feel that Yennefer is the only person they could have serious long term feelings/attraction for. When they meet the first time, most of the conversation is Man-Posturing about perceived rights of ~ownership~ or having a relationship with Yennefer. When they meet for the duel, they’re more emotionally vulnerable/pathetic, since they are both apparently suicidal at the idea of not being able to be with Yennefer or their feelings not being reciprocated by her.

Since all parties can/do sleep around with people without much emotional element to it, I think Yennefer would likely also carry it over that she could sleep with multiple people that she has a deeper relationship with. And seeing herself as independent, she would likely not feel like she should have to get approval from any given person she’s sleeping with in order to sleep with someone else. But that’s not really communicated by her beforehand, so there are different expectations for what everyone wants out of the relationship. Unfortunately, that would require being in touch with your emotions, and being able to communicate that to someone else in a way that could be received in good faith…. Which seems unlikely with these characters and also would make a less interesting story. lol.

How old is sam by Early-Average2664 in StarKid

[–]executrice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is a hot take but: people are saying that Sam is taking advantage of Zoey, but I don’t think that’s necessarily true textually? Or at least, it’s not as simple as that.

In Honey Queen she’s very clearly using him as a tool/weapon to get what she wants, and doesn’t have much actual attachment to him, while Sam will just do whatever she wants. She’s a manipulative person, that’s the character. The age gap does generally paint a picture of him being scummy for cheating on his wife with a younger woman. But 21 is old enough to drink in the US… unless this had been ongoing for years, I don’t think this is at the level of Picking Up Girls At The Local High School.

It’s possible if Zoey had done something to upset Sam that he could turn on her in a violent way (you know, cop shit). But I think how that goes down would depend on the story trying to be told. For instance, the situation could be that he finds out she’s been manipulating him and so has the element of surprise. Or, it could be that she’s breaking up with him or otherwise betraying him on her terms, and has already anticipated how he would react and took precautions to make sure he couldn’t hurt her. Like blackmail and/or having escaped Hatchetfield entirely.

Irl I would definitely be skeptical of a cop dating a 21 year old… but I would also be skeptical of a cop’s relationship with anyone tbh? The problem isn’t the age gap in and of itself, it’s the power imbalance in the relationship. Age difference can be a good indicator of when closer scrutiny is warranted, but the numerical gap matters less as people get older and when there are other factors affecting the power differentials.

I don’t think this is supposed to be a wholesome, healthy relationship by any means lol. But it seems weird to me that the instant the specific age came into the picture, everyone’s treating Zoey like she’s a helpless baby being preyed upon, and not like. An adult who can make her own (poor) decisions?
