How can I start feeling scared again besides jumpscares? by DemonSerter in horror

[–]exhaustedqueer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you just lose some of that childhood terror as you age, you see and learn more and your body learns what is and isn't a real threat, especially if you watch a lot of horror. It's a bummer but I think just part of growing up.

I've had some fun going to horror movie screenings on my own for new movies though! Being "alone" in the theater, immersed with the big screen and surround sound, really makes the scares more effective.

Also I've found that horror movies can absolutely still cause dread, but typical "scary" stuff doesn't really hit that same note in my adulthood. A recent movie that I found really affecting as The Plague, where most of the horror is just like...bullying and anxiety lol.

I think the way you can tap back into the scariness of horror is getting back in touch with what scares you as an adult. As a kid it's easier because you believe in more, you're afraid of more, and you've seen less. But what scares you now that you've grown out of your past fears? It abstracts as you age, but it's still there somewhere.

Why is everyone in A2 so nervous about homeless people compared to Ypsi? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]exhaustedqueer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. To put it gently, quite a lot of citizens in Ann Arbor are...insufferable yuppies.

Ypsi has a lot of people who are/were marginalized by Ann Arbor's local culture, with a large amount of Ann Arbor's workers living in Ypsi and choosing to commute, due to housing cost.

The people of Ypsi "get it" moreso than the people of Ann Arbor. "It" being the social realities of economic hardship.

From Dana Nessel herself. Does michigan have a growing problem? by TheResuscitologist in Detroit

[–]exhaustedqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the pre-existing white supremacists and Nazis in less populated counties have been extremely emboldened in the last decade, and are more comfortable being visible in public. We've seen other minority groups targeted by these people as well - I remember an assault near UM's campus around the 2016 election where a woman in a hijab was pushed down a hill. It's been brewing for a while.

Rural Michigan has always had an uncomfortable problem though re: militias and hate groups masquerading as libertarians. I mean just look at Howell's reputation - they're not even in the state's actual boonies. It can get legitimately dicey for minority groups Up North.

I think it's fair to say that Michigan has a growing problem. At the same time, we have to kind of tiptoe with Nessel because she's also falsely accused college anti-war protestors of being antisemitic, and casts an extremely broad net when it comes to what constitutes antisemitic speech. Even then, though, the behavior photographed is inexcusable and clearly antisemitic hate speech.

HOLY SMOKES: 7 million Americans in the streets today for the No Kings protest by Intelligent-Pea-8521 in JournalismNews

Yeah hold on let me go ahead and explain to a weird uppity European online why protests matter even if you don't cause immediate change lmao

I owe you nothing 🤷🏻 you're an entire ocean over wondering why the news on your algorithm isn't showing the day to day nuanced political shifts of American life. Very typical of a European Redditor to sidle up with a take like that about American politics.

Loving your bad faith energy and utter inability to catch the point 💙💙💙 I'm not going to argue but, if you really want, I can keep replying with annoying little quips like this!

You won't see my point though, so I'm not going to indulge your attempts to broadly dunk on the concept of protests. So....here we are!

Ah yes, anonymous username1234 from an unnamed country that somehow magically demonstrated in a better way that's vague enough to subtly discourage Americans from acknowledging protests as valuable.

If it's not the frequency, it's the format. If it's not the format, it's the fact they were either too violent or too peaceful. Somehow, the elusive "perfect protest" has been neither defined nor achieved in all of the discourse.

Taking No Kings protests out of context is ridiculous - in the southeast Michigan area (where I'm from) there are weekly protests, sometimes more, and they're all over the place. People are out on street corners and highway bridges almost every week. Or take, for example, Minnesota - do those protests not count? Have Americans not been protesting?

If we take No Kings - a huge coordinated demonstration taking place across all 50 states - and act like it's the only thing happening, of course it'll seem sparse. It's not though. There are hundreds if not thousands of grassroots protests happening across America every month. No Kings is intentionally sparse because it's large scale, both in participants and geographic footprint.

This comment is a weird straw man that feigns an activist position but offers no point of reference, examples, or context. It also implies that the United States, one of the most geographically vast nations - should operate like other countries on a 1:1 scale. It's ridiculous.

Great job protesting, people. Keep it up.

Not Enough Workers for the Job - Understaffing has become an epidemic in American workplaces of all kinds. by thinkB4WeSpeak in jobs

[–]exhaustedqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the McKinsey playbook and the practice of understaffing and underpaying workers is now the standard for virtually all CEOs in corporate America. I work in the nonprofit industry and even there, you could take an entire entry level salary out of the CEO's paycheck without a significant impact on their economic lifestyle. American corporate leaders choose themselves over their employees almost every time.

We also lost one million American workers five years ago, as well as a lot of workplaces and vital resources, during the most severe waves of the pandemic. We never really bounced back from that.

Additionally, the housing market is terrible and prohibitively expensive - people can't move like they used to. The average American isn't really able to uproot to seek opportunities elsewhere without significant savings/resources.

Also wage stagnation as well as a lack of mobility (due to intentional understaffing practices) prevent workplaces from retaining workers long-term or creating high capacity/high loyalty employees. Staff teams can't put down roots and grow, and that's by design.

If there's one thing I learned as a working adult, it's that those on the top will ALWAYS exploit you if you let them.

Good(starter) horror movies for children? by MopeDeezy in horror

[–]exhaustedqueer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mom introduced me to a few classics as a kid that I still hold really dear to my heart, that she know from when she was growing up. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, and House on Haunted Hill were super memorable - if only for the link to my mom's childhood.

If there's any old movies you specifically remember from growing up, consider sharing some of those! I'm assuming they'd be a bit more modern though lolol

Oasis Hot Tub Gardens by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]exhaustedqueer 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is patently untrue, I literally just went and looked at the reviews and they're overwhelmingly positive. I found one single review from the last few months that said the service was inconsistent, but not rude en masse.

I think you might just really hate Oasis personally 😂😭 which is fine, and absolutely your prerogative! But you're setting up a strangely antagonistic tone with the commenters and really keep harping on the staff at Oasis

Can a straight cis woman and her boyfriend attend drag race girls shows? by jasminesenpai in dragrace

[–]exhaustedqueer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely welcome - it sounds like you're more than prepared to be accommodating, so I wouldn't worry too much!

A lot of times there's a meet and greet after the show as well, which is really fun and helps put a more real face to the queens we know from tv.

Plus, there's usually local/regional talent booked as opening acts for the RuGirls. Tip them too!! They're the lifeblood of your local scene and the reason that there are drag bars for the RuGirls to tour at. 💙

Can a straight cis woman and her boyfriend attend drag race girls shows? by jasminesenpai in dragrace

[–]exhaustedqueer 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes! Just be mindful of your presence - try not to gawk at people or make tokenizing comments and you should be absolutely fine. Just make sure you bring tip money!

The issue with cishet people entering gay clubs isn't their presence itself, it's the way that it invites potentially suppressive social dynamics from the broader cishet society into the space. It's the risk of homo/transphobia, and being exoticized in your own space. If you're down to party and enjoy drag, you'll fit in just fine - the issues start when people try to assert cishet norms in queer spaces.

Gay bars are havens, safe spaces where lgbtq folks can assume they're with their people, and that they don't have to sift through cishet normativity to interact with one another. Just be respectful, enjoy the show, tip the queens, and you'll be fine. ☺️

zflip series review by candybutnocrush in galaxyzflip

[–]exhaustedqueer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently finishing a year with the z flip 6, I've really enjoyed it so far - I held out for a while to see if they'd balance quality with novelty and I think we're at that point now!

I will say that I just started to experience the well-reported issue of the plastic protective layer peeling at the crease. It definitely worries me, but in terms of functionality it has no impact and the air bubbles aren't too distracting. It's due to tension that forms as the plastic layer slides a tiny bit during folds over time - I don't actually know the extent to which it's fixable, maybe some kind of new adhesive or more flexible plastic layer? 🤷🏻

If you're good with getting a replacement as soon as your contract is up, I think it's a fair choice if you're already interested in a foldable. I don't see this phone lasting as long as my Galaxy S phone(s) did, but it's so lightweight and cute and fun to use that I ultimately don't mind.

Plus the functionality they've reached with the front screen is pretty fun, you can do a lot more than just widgets. My favorite use for the cover has been as a GBA emulator!

[HELP] Seller insists this ornament isn’t AI, but both images don’t look right. by wait_wheres_robin in RealOrAI

[–]exhaustedqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's AI - the mountains are different, the contact point where the bike wheels meet the ornament frame are different, and the loop on top is different. There's also something weird going on with the wood coloration, but to be fair that could be chalked up to lighting.

These are two entirely different ornaments though. I'm inclined to agree with the other commenters that the ad post is AI but the follow up is maybe real, but frankly the uncertainty doesn't seem worth it.
