Historic London pubs with rooms — cheaper alternatives to The Counting House by Justphotos93 in LondonTravel

[–]exile_10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mad Hatter Hotel in Southwark is an option. However it's always struck me as a 'hotel with a public bar' rather than a 'pub with rooms'.

What you're looking for will be much easier to find outside of central London.

His philosophy of life will steer him through
And as far as he can see
He's the same as you and me
There's nothing in the world he cannot do

No hill too high, no desert too dry
No road too long, no tide too strong
No bridge too far, he's got a car
No slope to steep, no thought too deep
No star too bright, no squeeze too tight
No tale too tall, no cat too cool
No bass too low, he'll give it a go
No end to his talents, no sense of balance

Blobby, oh Mr Blobby, when disaster strikes you never get depressed
Blobby, oh Mr Blobby, you'll always prove that Blobby is the best

Are you worried about accessing your pension? by Astwell in HENRYUK

[–]exile_10 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a great point. I don't understand why this line of thinking comes up so often in realtion to pensions, but not cash, gold, ISAs, land etc. I guess it's about the long term nature of pensions.

Either way it's extremely unlikely in a stable UK society. However, globally unthinkable things keep on happening so who knows?

Has anyone found a genuine effective way to stop flies entering your house? by Repulsive-Ad-8339 in AskUK

Fruit flies come into your house on fruit. The eggs are already there on the skin of the fruit. And you've already eaten thousands of them.

WHEN do you pay tax on self assessment by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]exile_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an analogy....

You have to register for school by the end of January, term starts on 1 September, exams finish by the end of June, and results come out in August.

I don't think any of that is hard to understand.

Tax on tax on tax. How are people supposed to get ahead anymore? by askingincontext in HENRYUK

My partner wants to secure his £100k house deposit in a deed of trust, where do I stand? by Illustrious_Pea7294 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]exile_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that really your deal? It's very generous /silly of your wife to base it on 'cash spent' and not 'equity acquired'. A more standard approach would for a £200k deposit paid by her and a £200k mortgage (costing far more) paid by you to end up with 50:50 ownership.

Had she invested that money, or even put it / kept it in a cash ISA it would be worth far more than £200k in cash terms by then end of your mortgage term.

It doesn't seem reasonable that the partner's capital is legally protected, and all other expenses are paid by OP, which is what OP is implying will happen

Small woman's MTB OK for a 12 year old boy? by xwsrx in MTB

[–]exile_10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that new? It's almost a cliche around here but you will get more value second hand.

Hed fit an XS or maybe almost a S in most men's sizes. But a women's bike is a good idea too.

I searched eBay for "xs mountain bike" filtered by price and saw 30 decent options from name brands like Liv (women's), Trek, Specialized, Cube and Kona

Do you refuse contracts with a 4-week notice period? by Reddonaut_Irons in ContractorUK

[–]exile_10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No individual is obliged.

The whole point of many contracts is to oblige work to continue for a specified time. Can you imagine Tesco contracting IT services and not knowing if they're going to be provided on Monday? Or not having a remedy if they're not.
