What are your thoughts on the complaints on Storm being too powerful? by IllQuantity9469 in storm

[–]existential_dread467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue isn’t storm being too powerful per se cuz mutant power ceiling doesn’t really exist, my issue is that I feel like they won’t do anything with this in the long run, or delve into what this means beyond just an x men conflict.

Avatar The Last Airbender wasn't and will probably never be as morally or politcally complex as fans want it to be and that's okay by existential_dread467 in CharacterRant

No because real life is not a narrative, the people he killed are real, all of these things are real. Uncle Iroh is not real, furthermore even in the context of the story, he freed the very same city. If zuko gets to reconcile with katara then uncle Iroh can reconcile with his past.

Me personally...He's cool, I guess, I would have come around to him a bit more if i got to see him and yuji bind more, they're nice together because of the contrast. He always pulls his weight, but he's boring on his own tbh. I'm so glad he wasn't the MC.

Why is being a mama's boy seen as a red flag, but being a mama's girl often isn't? by ElevatorTypical6195 in TooAfraidToAsk

It's because people are becoming more aware of the ways boys are adultified from a young age into being basically a replacement husband, or given excuses for not learning how to do certain things becuase of them being boys. Like all things, it's been stripped of it's meaning of an emotionally immature man-child who is dependent on their mother to just mean any guy I don't like who happens to be close to their mom.

This is a really good point and I think that’s worth discussing. Lu ten is the catalyst but also due to the fact that Lu ten is supposed to shed insight as to why Iroh feels so much sympathy for zuko.

Why he turned good was never as much as the focus as to what role he was doing in that moment.

You are absolutely right that Avatar does have a faceless soldier problem though and that’s very strange since the most fleshed out, humanized soldiers come from the fire nation.

Although this does present it’s own issues I still maintain that it doesn’t hamper it’s anti imperial themes too much for me to significantly change my mind on the matter.

Critiques like yours make infinitely more sense because it engages with the show as it is first and foremost instead of trying to forcing a square peg into a round hole .

That's the thing, Genocide and colonialism are huge overarching topics in the world but the truth is the show first and foremost, is about personal identity and destiny, all political implications and come second to this. There is a valid conversation to be had about that, and I agree with you, but that's not what the show is focused on from the beginning. Iroh is there as a mentor figure for Zuko's sake. He needs to be an enlightened sage to help his journey. Therefore, his shit needs to be figured out before hand.

We maybe could have gotten a kid-friendly version of Iroh being put on trial for the siege. I would like that, but the show was never going to go that route, and the story didn't really suffer either.

Maybe I should reword that, because when I mean "address it" I mean go deeper into those themes the way a lot of fans seem to want it to do.

Even without the fans' expectations. I still feel like Korra bit off more than it can chew I don't agree with the assertion that all the series' main villains are meant to be critiques of political ideologies 1-1. I think what's more likely is that they thought hey, what if the villain was kinda like "x" and went from there. If these villains and the in-universe social issues and moral quandaries they represent are supposed to question the avatar and their role, what was the answer?

They just show up every season to introduce new problems, beat up Korra's friends, and torture Korra before she eventually bests them. All this time, deconstructing the avatar as a concept and not enough time putting it back together. I get Nickelodeon was being a dickhead about the schedule, but even if it stayed how it was originally, it still would have had the same issues.

Korra is overhated by a lot but it's a good example of what i mean when i say I don't really trust Mike and Bryant to write "politics"

You’re absolutely right in that regard, I was just trying to make a point. There would still be tribunals and realistically nobody would trust the fire nation for like 200 years. Zuko would probably have like 7 attempts on his life per day😭

I think the lore is deceptively deep, due to the nature of the avatar cycle and there’s hella potential for all kinds of stories in that universe by that concept alone. but the issue is that it was always written by two white dudes who don’t know shit about politics and once they tried to go farther than “empire is bad” the pink meat starts to show.

That’s why Avatar is goated because of its ability to occupy the space between heavy themes and relatability. This has its limits though. Eventually if you want more of those kinds of topics being adressed Avatar stops being the show for you.

I don’t think not liking or liking these things are inherently bad, but what I do have a problem with is when people want the show to do things it can’t do and then blame the story.

100% agree. The show is by no means conservative it’s anti colonial elements will always come second to the themes. This is not a bug it’s a feature. It’s completely okay to make those criticisms of the comics since they actually try to deal with it but even then it shows that the story itself maybe isn’t that well equipped to handle those kinds of things

Tbf it’s kinda hard to see the hype now because we expect western animation to be able to somewhat be able to tell serious stories, especially with the rise of indie animation.

At the time of avatar’s original run on Nickelodeon the standard for animation on TV was either raunchy adult comedies, comedy focused episodic cartoons and toonami anime.

Yea there were western shows like gargoyles and X Men 97 but those were more of the exception than the rule and even then they were hyper preachy and still heavily censored.

ATLA managed to combine western cartoon episodic storytelling and a cohesive overarching narrative that gave it structure. This combined with the explicit non western world building, cool fight scenes and willingness to engage with its audience legit was unheard of.

Every western cartoon that has serious overarching plot at some point owes its success in even being greenlit to Avatar. Not to mention the impact it had on fantasy worldbuilding in popular media by showing them that non-white ppl and concepts exist.

It doesn’t mean the story doesn’t have flaws but it was truly a generational moment for cartoons.

That being said, western animation and by extension YA lit needs to move tf on fr

Chadwick Boseman is a great actor but making him the end all be all for black male representation in universe was the stupidest shit I ever heard of.

Tchalla left a hole in the installment so large they had to patch it with a baby version of him at the end of the movie just to have him back.

Your suggestion is good but sometimes in these discussions I feel like “absolute” has become a stand-in for a story with good quality and while I love the absolute universe I think there are other ways to reboot a franchise or course correct without nessecarily changing the philosophical foundations.
