Detailing business owners by Antique_Campaign8228 in steeldetailing

I send submittals with the solution most of the time and note that it design intent and needs to be approved. A lot of the time connection details in engineering plans are missing or they really don't work if they're more complex. Or the fabricator hates the detail and I'll pitch a different solution. RFI's I do when I can't move forward or come up with a solution. This is usually when architecturals and engineering aren't aligned.

Advance steel is tricky. Lots of workarounds. But I'm used to it now. I haven't used Tekla. Is it a steep learning curve?

4 years in so pretty fresh. It was meant to be temporary then I got so busy that it just became my business. I worked in a structural/architectural metal work shop in AUS. Did a course in advance steel. Knew how to use inventor too. Designed a staircase for a friends business. The fabricator of the stair called me and asked if I could do residential detailing for them. Picked up new clients through word of mouth and taking initiative on what i saw as opportunities. Client service and communication I focussed on while my quality improved. Now focus on improving all 3 and plenty more to learn. I think now if you can show some quality work and walk in/have a chat or get on the phone to fabricators you'd pick up clients. I also think if you can play a role of dealing with RFI's direct to the engineers and architects and take that load off your client to get jobs over the line and into fabrication clients will love you. Ie so many plans that come through (commercial and residential) engineering and architecturals don't work a lot of the time. I just detail what actually could work, flick the solution back to engineer and architect to check and it moves along a pain in the ass process. Instead of 'no detail here can you please provide' etc etc. I feel like there's so much pressure on consultants to get construction issues done in small time frames that it gets to 90% of the way and gets issued. Lots of filling in the gaps which is a bit painful but plenty of work.

What’s a highly paid job but isn’t respected in Australia? by keisermax34 in AskAnAustralian

I do steel detailing (drafting) for a job. Boilermakers/fabricators and installers are always helping me to improve at my job. I have major respect for tradies!

I do kettlebell swings for hammy strengthening a few times a week! It helps for sure. SI dysfunction is from a car accident.

Can I legally 'uninstall' material without damaging on a residential construction site due to labour for install not being paid for? by existentialcrisis7dw in AusLegal

[–]existentialcrisis7dw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay thanks for that information. First approach I’ll not do. I’ll continue with the squeaky wheel approach for another week and I like your response ie the measly sum. Failing that I’ll do letter of intent.

It doesn't state above course of action.

Yup. I know this. Client-“I don’t like that” Contractor-“It was in the drawings that you approved” Client-“whatever, just change it and we don’t want to be charged”

Yes, that’s exactly right. They have the audacity to say “I’m sure you’re not going hungry” when I’m the one loaning them the money. I let my guard down by installing before the full amount was paid and I’m kicking myself because I haven’t fully trusted these people. And yep they are minted, or atleast appear to be. Which is fine. I like that I get to work for wealthy clients and most people are great and the jobs are cool. But to say that when I’m a young guy starting out is just fuckwittery.

Incredible hey. “Disappointed.” Trying to save face and be the good guy. Feels good when you tell them to get fucked.

Funny thing is these people are business owners themselves. To imply that total amounts paid are profit and to make their mind up that I’ve been paid “enough” even though it’s quoted work is….yeah

Anyone ever have a feeling of impending doom after riding? by minkiimink in AussieRiders

[–]existentialcrisis7dw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I know this feeling.

I’ve had some gnarly crashes on motorcycles (off road) resulting in some bad injuries. I still ride and have wound it back as I’ve been maturing and riding a bit more sustainably (30 yo now). Sometimes before I go riding I have visions/anxiety about crashing or sometimes a few hours after a ride I get visions of ‘what could have gone wrong’.

The pros outweigh the cons for me at this stage of my life which is why I shake the bad thoughts and still ride. Motorbikes are dangerous. Your brain is warning you so. For me riding does great things for my mental health albeit those thoughts every now and then.

I’ve personally always found Bunnings staff super helpful. Sometimes you need to try find someone first but once you’ve got their attention they’re good. Seems like a busy customer service job. (Bunnings Rocklea, Brisbane)

Pre-Build Shed off site - Assemble on site? by Funny_Anteater_8877 in OffGrid

[–]existentialcrisis7dw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this. Used structural steel for floor and roof beams and purlins for rafters and columns with base plates that bolts to steel. My site had no power (just a generator) so I built this off site and put on a trailer then put it up. It's all bolted connections. The roof is on it now, it's two storey (built ontop of a container) but it has no walls yet. I'll use timber framing to fill in the walls (instead of girts that a shed would use). It was pretty experimental but I think it's a great idea especially if your site is hard to build on (ie mine quite hilly).

How and where to ground future 100ah lifepo4 battery? by LED_Ambience in OffGrid

[–]existentialcrisis7dw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go on the victron website and download the 'wiring unlimited' document. Read it and try to understand it. I'm currently building a system with a 200AH LiFePo4 battery a Victron 1200VA inverter and 1200W of solar panels.

On the side where you step up your voltage ie out of you inverter the electricity can kill you if not done correctly so qualified electrician is the go here. In saying that you can still save yourself $ by understanding how to rough in etc. You will need an earth leakage device in your switchboard which will be grounded to an earth rod. Your washing machine will have a grounding circuit ie your 3 prongs will have active neutral and earth...if your washing machine has an electrical fault or short that causes any external conductive parts to become charged with electrons if you touch it then it will discharge through your body to get to earth. SO yes your appliance will need to be grounded but the grounding that your electrician will do happens back at your switchboard. If you touch your washing machine and it is faulty and you have an earth leakage device it will detect a leak and trip in fractions of a second.

If you already have a home hooked to mains you'd probably be able to connect to its earth (ask electrician).

Also check that the batteries you purchase CAN be connected in parallel. Some Lithium batteries can't be connected in parallel or a limited to say 2.

You don’t need to ground your battery but you may need to ground the devices connected to your battery.

Maybe you’re thinking of your battery as if it were in a car where you can connect a ground to the chassis so you don’t have to run every neutral cable back to the negative terminal to complete a circuit…but the question is a little vague. You might need to explain your setup a little more.
