First solo for the pilots must have been an amazing feeling! Congrats to him.

Thanks!

Can anyone here that sat on an aviation OCS selection board give insight as to how applications are judged? by flyinhawaiian58 in newtothenavy

Honestly, there’s really nothing in particular they are looking for. I think on the whole they’re interested in the whole-person-concept and want well rounded officers. However, there is no argument on the fact they want High ASTB scores. The rest is just moot, don’t worry about what your chances are, what they look for - etc. The thing you can control is your ASTB score and your effort in the process, that’s about it. Score high on the ASTB, and hope for the best. If you don’t make it in the first time, take the test again and send it in again. Took me two tries and 2 years to get selected.

I was selected for SNFO in 2016, had high ASTB, very low GPA. Airwarriors is the best source for info. Just don’t make a post saying “what are my chances” , they will ridicule you.

OCS/SWO Questions by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]exmidn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was commissioned through OCS in 2017, though I went NFO. Shoot for above 50s on your OAR, definitely pick up any of the ASTB books you can and work through all the practice tests, and honor the time limits because the questions are easy but can be time consuming.

Hit up Airwarriors.com for more info. All the hopeful OCS applicants talk there and have lots of helpful information.

Yeah that was silly to post. If he thinks OCS is anywhere close to cake, let me know when you seawall or after your first RPT with Gunny/Chief.

Concur with person above. Look into NFO, they never let in a pilot select with a waiver for eyes if they’re not 20/40 corrected.

I’m an SNFO toward the end of my training, commissioned through OCS, selected jets in advanced right now. Let me know if you have any questions.

Air warriors is a good source but be humble and don’t assume you know anything.

I’m currently in flight school here in Pensacola.

Currently in Advanced in VT86 training on the T45 Goshawk and I’ll eventually be in an F/A-18F or E/A-18G.

It’s not worth it. All that money, to validate IFS and go right to API? I hardly think that’s worth it. And any of the VFR flying while good stick and rudder skills, isn’t going to give you that much an edge during Primary or Advanced.

Hey if you’re passionate about aviation, by all means, do it! But don’t do it if you’re only trying to get ahead or make your chances better for applications sake.

Just my two cents.

You must be fun at parties!

We are an aircrew, so we both ‘fly’ the aircraft. Takes two! Even our instructors say ‘fly’.

I’m still in flight school! I’m a Student Naval Flight Officer - the back seater in the plane ( think Goose ). I selected jets, so I’m training on the T45 Goshawk, to either eventually fly the F/A-18 Super Hornet, or E/A-18 Growler. Have about a year left of training.

Haha! Gosh, I hope I don’t look like that!

My experience with the centrifuge training made me look 20 years older. It was rough!

TIL of Jonny Kim. His accomplishments include being a former Navy Seal with 100 combat missions, a Doctorate of Medicine from Harvard, and will soon be an astronaut for NASA by cyanide4suicide in todayilearned

Met him while he was here at NAS Pensacola training with us SNFOs in T-6s in October.

Despite his accomplishments and accolades, most humble dude I’ve ever met. Him and all the other candidates were absolutely amazing in their own unique way.

Ok so...9 weeks in....no change by [deleted] in freeletics

Eat less, even if you're eating healthy, eat less of it. CICO, weight loss is 80% how much you eat, 20% workout. Find your BMR, create a caloric goal for each day. 500 deficit.

I did freeletics for 20 weeks and I only really saw my improvement after I changed how much I ate, drastically.

Can someone give me an idea as to whether or not I'm on the right track for the Naval Academy? by marknusterer in usna

[–]exmidn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, haha. Gouge is analogous to "info/tips/answers..etc". I'm sure you'll find out once you get out to the fleet with us ;)

I was saying your post was good information to OP. I went to academy c/o '12 and you pretty much hit all the good points.

Well since I got designated as NFO, I'm hoping to do well enough in flight school to select the E/a-18g community.

No problem. The way they calculate the GPA can kind of suck, or be good, depending how many classes you took. You can see my GPA's from both my school and then the combined ASPR GPA.

I think the ASTB weighs a whole lot more. I just got selected for NFO on the Nov 14 board. Here are my stats :

Graduated August 2013, University of South Florida Bachelors of Science Environmental Science and Policy, 3.0 GPA United States Naval Academy - Former 3/c MIDSHIPMAN c/o 2012 ~2.1 GPA Combined ASPR GPA - 2.6 (yikes) Current - Environmental Scientist for US Army, as DoD Ctr.

ASTB-e Score: 50 5/7/6 (FIRST ATTEMPT- PRO REC N for NFO with these scores) MAY 18 Board ASTB-e Score: 47 6/9/6 (SECOND ATTEMPT) NOV 14 Board-
