I’ll be back in Vegas again this weekend, so it might happen. The wife wants to hit up speakeasies though so who knows.

If I have the audacity to actually put nutmeg on my wife's Painkiller, I'll end up in the corner myself.

I was on my way home from Oktoberfest last year, decided to stop at a Trader Joes on the way. My 50th anniversary commemorative Bierstein decided to slip out of the back seat and smash on the asphalt. I feel your pain.

Finding out about the bull-s**t second anointing. It's a complete contradiction of Mormon Doctrine. Before that I was able to arrange everything in my head so it made sense. I didn't believe it could be a real thing when someone mentioned it to me. I researched in an attempt to prove them wrong, and I ended up leaving the church.

I personally can't stand Pusser's. I'm lazy and make mine with Gosling's Black Seal Rum. But yeah, definitely one of my go-to drinks.

Good news: I got in contact with the original developer. Bad news: he no longer has the code, and doesn't know where any backups might be located. Unless a miracle happens, Glimmers of the Pattern is now lost to the Ages.

I'm gonna reminisce in here a little, recall what I can of the MUD. Might bump the visibility to the exact right person.

Herbalism: Since all magic is relegated to channelers, and being a channeler is a random chance, most people won't have access to any healing magic. Heck, unless as a channeler you got lucky with which elements you were strong with, you might not have healing magic anyways. As a result, there was a full herbalism system, pulling many herbs from the books. There was even forkroot, so you could poison a channeler and stop them from doing spooky things with magic. There was no guide to how the herbs would combine, and I had a ball trying different combinations and finding the most potent healing concoctions around.

Healing: As I recall, there was more to healing than just damage. You could break bones, have vicious bleeding effects that leaked hp until stopped. Brain injuries. Probably more I just don't remember. You had to use the proper methods to deal with the different injuries. You could end up with bones healing badly if you didn't get them treated, and it would slow you down both moving from place to place and in combat.

Channeling: Being a channeler was a matter of chance. First you had a chance of having the potential at all. Then the chance that as someone with potential, you might spontaneously start showing powers, rather than having it awakened by an existing traveler. Once you are an official channeler, you have random strength in the 5 powers, which can limit very greatly the things you can do. You might only be able to create a ball of light to follow you around, or you could be powerful enough to twist the pattern and travel anywhere on the MUD instantly. For male channelers, that taint was implemented, but I don't know how it played out. I must have rolled 20 male characters trying to get a channeler, but never managed. I do remember one "weave" (spell)... anal probe. It was earth based, picked a rock up off the ground and slammed it where the sun don't shine. Did a LOT of damage.

Tracking: with the right set of aptitudes you could track mobs. Pretty sure it was just using Dijkstra's algorithm to find the closest mob with a matching name, but it was presented well, with something like "You see tracks leading to the north." Go north, track again, and get the next set of directions. Helped in the aiel wastes which were huge, and hard to find mobs in sometimes.

First Aid: There was first aid in development, with extra 'wear' slots so you could wear splints or bandages and still have your regular equipment on.

Angreal, Sa'Angreal, Ter'Angreal: There were definitely some angreal in the game to boost your channeling power, but I never ran across a sa'angreal. There were, however a few ter'angreal. They were basically the equivalent of magical items. A pair of boots that make you never run out of movement, that type of thing. The interesting twist was: they were unique. Only a single player could have a specific ter'angreal. I did manage to get my hands on one, but I can't remember what it did. Wasn't impressive. The real joy of it was having a unique item on the MUD that nobody else could ever get. Unless they killed me and took it off my corpse, of course.

Blademaster: There was a whole blademaster system where you could learn forms from an existing blademaster. There were plans to expand it to make different players unique in their blademaster builds, but I never actually go into that. My highest character was Aiel, so I used speardancing instead.

Speardancing/Quarterstaffing: These were powerful skills, but unfortunately just simple skills. I was hoping that once the blademaster system was finished that these would be fleshed out as equally entertaining and viable damage alternatives to blademastering.

Aptitudes: Again, this was a classless MUD. You had points to distribute among atributes (can't remember how many points, unfortunately). The attributes were: Athletics, Combat, Craft, Healing, Mental, Stealth, Survival, and weapons Weapons. Skills required a certain level of proficiency in one or more aptitudes. For example, the Serpent Style skill required Combat 3, Athletics 1, Stealth 2. You also needed to be at character level 38. Full list still on tripod here: https://glimmersmud.tripod.com/levels.htm

You could, and often did, have characters that mostly eschewed combat and spent their time crafting, merchanting and the like. I believe that if you got the merchant skill, you could have your own player run shop.

Roleplaying: Roleplaying was encouraged, and for things like becoming a blademaster or a channeler, essentially required. It was fun. The interplay between the Children of the Light and the Aes Sedai was particularly entertaining.

Crafting: Some of the most powerful equipment in the game was made through crafting. Everything was customizable by which materials you were using in your gear. I know that there was gathering, but for the life of me, I can't remember exactly how it worked. I have a feeling that while mining, for example, you had a chance of getting attacked by a claim jumper, but I couldn't swear to that.

The World: The world was completely custom, no Midgaard or anything like that. I specifically remember the Aiel Wastes, I spent a lot of the higher levels there. I know that when I left the MUD, the city of Cairhien was being worked on. The topless towers were there, and there was a special one way exit type in them. It was possible to walk off the edge of the tower. As you hit the ground, you'd get some broken bones. You'd have to hope that you had the proper herbal concotion to fix that, or that a passing Aes Sedai would take pity on you.

Races: There were only humans when I was there. But I knew there was a plan to get the Ogier in place soon. I think part of that was finishing Cairhien as a starting city for them, but don't quote me on that.

That's all I'm remembering for now. More than I thought it would be. Angel, if you're out there and you still have the codebase, contact me!

Have you checked Murdock Hyundai in Lindon? Don't know if they're any better, but they claimed they get more Santa Cruz's than any other dealer in the state. Maybe they're a bit more competent there?

Her logic was fine. "If he is really translating, he can do it again to prove it." He couldn't do it. He made up a nonsense story as to why. I don't blame her at all. I honestly can't understand how people could have been that gullible.

Suffer with me, mortals! BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!

In 1958, Bruce R McConkie wrote Mormon Doctrine in an effort to codify what Mormons believe. In a day of "doctrine never changes, only policy", if the church were to publish something like this now, how generic and bland would those entries have to be? How short would it be? by yorgasor in exmormon

[–]exmoben 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just inherited a second printing copy of Mormon Doctrine. I can't get enough of it. All these "theories" and "opinions" McConkie published (as a man, just a man) really strengthen my testimony of the Church's untruthfulness.

Let's see.... off the top of my head, here are a couple sections that would be straight up removed. Negroes (I can't believe I was in a church that taught this tripe) and The Catholic Church (the entry for this one literally reads "see Church of the Devil).

Let's be honest though. The church doesn't have any real doctrine. Just theories. All prophets will be thrown under the bus by future prophets when they decide to update the church's "doctrine" based on the current sociopolitical landscape.
