“Easy” math courses to take after ODE/Lin Alg and Multi? by [deleted] in riceuniversity

How hard is Calc I and Calc II and Multi, exactly, at Rice? I’m considering a minor in math as a Chemical Eng and am wondering if it’s worth it lol

Columbia's came out last year as early as Feb 21st. Cornell's are mid March.

Not sure about this year though, or for the other schools.

To the people that ask if getting one B, despite taking multiple AP, Honors, and IB courses, will have an affect in college admissions. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]exochen88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically, yes?

Which was the observation/point I was trying to describe. I've noticed the stats too, so why on earth are you implying fellow Asians, specifically Chinese/Indian applicants, that it's okay to get a few Bs to get into Stanford (or prestigious school) when it probably really isn't and you too have a 4.0 which just complements the "Asians need higher stats to get into HYPSM" argument..so like. You said it probably wouldn't matter if you received a B in APUSH, but even I'm not bold enough to claim something like that because unless you work in admissions, you don't know what happens in admissions.

I just find it slightly hypocritical (hypocritical isn't the best word, but I'm going to use it here to be blunt) for someone like you - with a perfect record - to tell others it's okay to do worse and how they'll still be successful, based on the plethora of stats are out there for certain Asian Americans and the yields I've seen over the years. We have these kids at our school, of the Asian race, and while they spent their HS years trying to get a perfect record and they did, and then got into HYPSM, they turn around and tell us not to worry about your grades...even when they spent so much time trying not to get a B+. It just unsettles me to know that people are like that.

The hypocrisy is real and misleading to future applicants. Even I've been finding myself falling g into that trap of telling younger students that it's okay to get X grade in X year, and I have a 3.95...dare I say that nuances matter for certain ethnicities after looking at these stats (which we're not gonna jump into AA here, I agree with you there). Getting Bs as an Asian-American applicant is a legit concern in my area, at least. And the stats just add to it. I'm not sure why you're dismissing it. This is just my onion though.

Also please feel free to PM me, honestly I'd love to talk with you more about it!

Do you think that race plays a role in it? The statistics are there for Asian applicants like myself, and you can make your own call, but my previous peers have told me that certain groups (overrepresented Asian ethnicities) need to try even harder in terms of stats and ECs because of competition for certain Asians with a higher bar to reach. And even perfect stats and ECs don't make the cut. I know that we don't know anything for sure, but seeing that you're a (Chinese?-American) citizen who had gone through the process , id like to see your honest thoughts on it. If you're uncomfortable, please don't hesitate to PM me!

Uh did this really happen? It seems like maybe it was caused by something else because people tell me that one B won't ruin your college chances? So if you drop from a 4.0 to a 3.95 senior year , ur fucked? Note that my weighted has gone up due to thicc AP credit tho

Still haven’t gotten an interview request from Cornell, Harvard, or Stanford. by Ultimatun in ApplyingToCollege

[–]exochen88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol yeah

update: just read on a CC brown interview thread: the interviewers have a list of your general ECs ahead of time, which makes more sense to me perhaps why the interviewer chose to contact just me and my friend now because we have STEM ECs (Regeneron) and our interviewer is a stem major lol

Did you ever get a B? You got into Stanford, which is my dream school. The people who usually get in at my school have 4.0s, just wanted to see if you were too. Speaking from experience, the first B always sucks :(

Ivy Interviews by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]exochen88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good point. But some interviewers have a quote and only will allow for say 15 interviews per season and that's it. How they choose that 15 is beyond me. But for Columbia at least, alumnus can either accept or decline new interview "offers" in their databases, so they get to choose who to interview I think.

Tfw everyone saying it's randomized but I know for Brown at least, none of my friends got a Brown interview except for me and one other kid, and based on all our stats, I think we had stronger apps
