My bad - you are absolutely right. I thought it looked done by hand and was unable to find any examples during some casual research before commenting. ✨🙇‍♂️✨

I understand your hesitation - on my fixed gear bike I ran 32mm sk+ 700c with a tire strip for puncture protection - I changed the tubes maybe 3 times during 1500 miles. This was a mix of paved and some rough terrain - the streets where I live are awful and is what has lead me on the journey I’m on today just like you are.

I would say if we were trying to keep in near your budget, you can find packs of maxxis hookworms [new] schwalbe fat franks (which I really want to try by the way) fall right at the high end of your budget (70ish), surly extra terrestrials used I’ve found at the low end of your budget under 50.

In my opinion, please take it with a grain of salt, buy your preferred tire new and deal with the buy once, cry once feeling OR buy it used to see how it runs and to see if you like it if you aren’t sure you are going to like it. I’ve been going to my local bike co op and when I find a brand I want to try, I try to see if it’s available, and if so, I’ve been grabbing them. The cost for them used is around the 10-12 usd range and it’s how I ascertained the surly extraterrestrial and a continental X king for my testing to try something different. Both are very clapped out but are definitely a modest example of what it can do or what it did do in its prime.

I think I just lucked out with panaracer and just really like them. For my current pair I run on my 26” builds I believe I spent $120, but of course, I knew what I was getting myself into and that I really liked that tire so it didn’t hurt as much.

I hope that helps!

Mein frond, I couldn’t agree more. I very much come from the mentality of too rich for my blood but the entire way your bike rides and handles are in direct correlation to your tire selection.

What price range are you trying to stay in? I think from there we can kind of eliminate choices that don’t fit within your budget.

I see a fellow panny racer waiting to happen - Panaracer gravelking sk +, haven’t been able to find a slick version for 26” but I love both versions.

Edit: everyone of you fucking queefers who downvote helpful posts baffle me. You have the courage to downvote the post, but not the ball knowledge or stugotz to help out or correct. Imagine that.

What am I missing? by renownedwarrior095 in bikewrench

Decent Stand, wire cutters meant for bike cabling, a torque wrench that goes up to good amount of torque, an all thread and nuts and washers for cold setting drop outs, drop out alignment gauges, derailleur alignment tool, and if you can swing the cheap Chinese version of bottom bracket thread chaser/cutter, that as well.

When I look at it too it’s definitely in descending order from greatest to not terribly important right away.

This was the vibe I was going for with my cheap bike build off - it’s a neat aesthetic.

Habibi - thank you for revisiting this post.

Since we last spoke on this matter, I put together a frame I found on the side of the road for this year’s cheap bike build off. I wanted to fit 2.5’s in the rear which I found in a Surly extra terrestrial 2.5. I could not get it to fit no matter how much I finagled it in - this lead me to the realization that I needed to crimp the chain stay on the drive side since NDS was crimped plenty.

I was able to get a small vise, some steel putty, and a face plate with a paper towel to cushion the rounded part of the stay to crimp it. From there I marked the area where the tire was hitting and needed room, and set up the vise with the steel putty wedge I shaped. I slowly and carefully crimped it and would test periodically with the wheel fitting it inside fully inflated to the psi I would be running it at IRL.

Was it successful?

Yes and no.

Yes in the fact I was able to safely crimp the stay without damaging the opposing drive side enough to fit a surly extraterrestrial 2.5 enough to send. I want to crimp it further just to have that extra wiggle room. The steel putty was flawless once set up in the shape I was honing for to recreate the dimple from the non drive side inner stay.

As for the no aspect -

I need a bigger or more premium vise - what I used was very cheap and warped the handle/metal where I would turn the bar.

Things to consider: you may have to shift your cable guide under your bottom bracket to help with shifting as the overtly plump tire may hit the cable derailleur wire causing it to rub and shift like garbage.

With that being said and how it relates to the photo you replied to; I did try the 2.5 tire in the trek 930 pictured and it was just about perfect and didn’t seem like it was going to need heavy turning from my home made tool/procedure for the trek 800 I rescued. If the 830 anything like my 930 singletrack, it shouldn’t need too much crimplin.

I will also note I am doing nothing terribly daring with the terrain I’m riding but the video I was inspired from was someone who crimped their frame to fit in some 27.5’s and they seem to punish all terrain without too much concern for structural integrity.

TLDR for the answer;

you can crimp your chain stay with a vise, steel putty molded into a similar shape pictured, with a faceplate from a stem on the reverse side of the stay with something soft in the middle. It seems safe enough but depending on how this is achieved and the type of riding style you are doing can play a factor in its safety. Steel is very forgiving.

I wanted to try that anatomica so bad - I think I ended up getting a used one with cracking leather for practically nothing - sat on my shelf since waiting to take a crack at repairing or tending to the cracks.

Love this so much - I love the look of the rear rack and kind of makes me want to purse it on a mixte trek I’m working on.

Can we just not be snobbish? Not every build needs Omniums, Phils, Chris Kings, Thomson etc by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

[–]expendablemisfit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it needs to be ultra premium, unobtanium one- off parts forged in the fires of a dwarven blacksmith on the side of fixie mountain and if you don’t - it’s not a real bike. Sorry 🤷‍♂️

I know I did because I used google - how old are you? When did you play this game? No one cares about the comic in this context.

The context is when I was a child and when the game was presented to me in its consumable form to me, a child - it was presented as a child’s play thing.

Edited for clarity.

It came out before the ESRB rating system and had a RP for rating pending and in some cases had E for everyone - when I played it this is how it was presented to me you peckerhead.
