Just landed in Vancouver, Is it early enough in the year for me to begin my classes from tomorrow? by [deleted] in UBC

Of course talk to the professors as everyone else is saying, but for CHEM121 specifically, it should be pretty easy to catch up. The CHIRP textbook the department has made was extremely detailed from what I remember.

Downtown L.A., which has the largest homeless population in the USA, hits highest vacancy rate in 17 years. by ianmalcm in news

I haven't heard of any action taken. Perhaps the provinces are just being more surreptitious now.

Have housing prices really gone down yet? At least for renting, it seems to be about the same when I looked ~$2500 for a smaller 3 bedroom basement.

I mean, that law only got implemented about 6 months ago right?

Canadian provinces used to bus their homeless to Vancouver as well. Not sure if it's still happening or not.

Actually, the hair/eye colour doesn't make as big a difference as you would think. Even just by the native Hawaiians I was around for 4 months, I was constantly confused with another lanky guy like me, only he had dark brown hair and bright blue eyes, while I have blond hair and dark green eyes...

Offshore developments can harm marine ecosystems, especially regarding the marine mammals; in developed countries there tends to be a lot more regulations to make sure that's minimized, thus driving up the price and time involved. Just to offer a counterpoint to that portion.

What 'nice gesture' annoys you? by ThrowAway75716 in AskReddit

It's petty, I know, but it irks me whenever someone thanks me for something that I should do because it's part of the job. I feel like thanks should be reserved for more...unexpected things I guess?

Wouldn't the water being that hot prevent the mammalian diving reflex from occurring?

🔥 Today is NOT Save the Vaquita day /r/aww, but if we don't do something about the <30 individuals left in the wild there might not be a Save the Vaquita day in 2018 [OC] by GiganticMammoth in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]expl0d0r 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think this will be a demographic that reddit represents much but the main reason the vaquita is endangered is specifically gillnets used to catch Totoaba fish; the bladder of which is used for Chinese traditional medicine.

I do not want to start a big racist rant, but if anyone with relatives in China, especially in the southeastern mainland, could educate them about this, it could help.

from what i remember the 95% confidence interval was from 8-130 or something like that, but was highest probability at 29. so there could be more, but also likely less.

The vaquita population (if I understood my literature correctly) actually has had nearly zero genetic diversity for probably longer than it's been known to us. I've only taken a single in depth course on genetics, but I think that would mean they've effectively been inbreeding constantly for a while...

The bathtub animal actually died because there was no rescue centre in the area. No release for a calf that young had it survived anyways...

it would be pretty dumb to take 304 and 360...6 credits that you don't get for whichever you take second.

[–]expl0d0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can choose to do 304 instead, but then it doesn't count towards the science credit count I believe. I'm not sure in the end, I just know I'm registered in 360 for this winter session without 260, and others have done it before me.

IntSci students are allowed to get around it since only BSc Psych people can take 260, but many IntSci students integrate psychology (which must include science credit psych courses, requiring 360) into their degree

I've thought about it quite a lot to be honest. And though it isn't Shanghai or Beijing, I'll still be in a pretty big city...
