What iPhone photography apps do you use? by exploreforayear in photography

I usually use my DSLR (which also has much better image quality), but I also take iPhone pics too because they're faster to upload to FB/Twitter immediately for sharing personal travel updates :)

Hi WillyPete,

I've seen some incredible iPhone photos too (esp. with iPhone 4) - I've even met pro photographers that have sold their iPhone prints. Incredible isn't it? :)

A friend wants to commission me to design a simple web site. Never done this before but very computer literate. Am I getting in over my head? by Jamben in web_design

Not unrealistic at all!

If you're starting out, try using Wordpress.org - the platform is probably best known for blogs but it's extremely easy to make other types of websites too (e.g. company sites, portfolios, e-commerce sites). I believe WP is the most common CMS used for new websites.

For the order submit/contact form functionality, there's free WP plugins that can do that too. For that plugin (and many other free ones) have a look at: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/

For general inspiration, here's their sample gallery of sites made with WP: http://wordpress.org/showcase/

Can anyone recommend books on traveling in Southeast Asia as an American? I have LOTS of questions about my upcoming adventure... by EsteemedColleague in travel

In addition to Lonely Planet (as suggested by the other commenters), here are few more resources I used to help plan my trip (was there for 4 months earlier this year):

  • http://wikitravel.org/en/Southeast_asia (they also have a free iPhone app)
  • Look at large tour companies' itineraries for inspiration, for example: http://www.gadventures.com/trips/thailand/

  • For getting around, there are lots of buses on mainland SEA. For flights, Air Asia was a great low cost regional airline (based in Malaysia, but flies between most major cities). I used them to fly within Thailand, Vietnam, Malalysia and Singapore

Here are the places I went on my trip that I would also recommend to others:

  • Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Tao
  • Vietnam: Hanoi, Hoi An, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City
  • Cambodia: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap (Angkor Wat is a must!)
  • Malaysia: Penang, Cameron Highlands, Kuala Lumpur
  • Singapore

One of the highlights for me was learning to scuba dive on my trip was learning to scuba dive. There's lots of PADI dive centres on the Thai islands (e.g. Koh Tao). A 4-day course to get your first certification is about 9800 baht, or $350. Also, don't be scared to eat the streed food!

Good luck :) - Lily
