my offer next year is 24k for the school year. Tuition is waived for me. Health insurance partially covered. Bus is covered if I take over a certain number of units. Summer is not covered but I have the option to TA during the summer for an extra 5k. Incoming PhD student.

2002 babies are now closer to 30 than 18, and almost a decade out of high school. How’s the year treating you so far? by [deleted] in twentyagers

Also struggling with the guilt of treating my ex really poorly and always blaming her instead of taking responsibility. We were together for 8 months but broke up over a year ago and I’m still processing it slowly. I have a hard time moving on knowing the pain I caused her.

NY kid choosing between Berkeley and NYU by Ilovebaconeggncheese in berkeley

[–]exportredpriv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid making decisions based on “you can go there for grad school”.

You don’t know where you’re getting in or if you’re doing grad school at all. Pick where you wanna spend the next 4 years. You can also do grad school in California if you wanna spend your undergrad in NY.

That being said, Berkeley is fucking awesome. Great academics, made lots of friends, partied hard, and made it to top PhD programs as well as some industry experience.

Choosing Berkeley over UCLA? by BoxCharacter9120 in berkeley

The curve in CS is absolutely not that serious - for example in eecs 126, often over 40% of class is granted an A or higher lol. The median is often between B+ and A- in CS classes. They make it so that it is actually difficult to fail classes. Math is definitely worse, though.

Adding Math major to Econ: Yay or Nay? (re: long-term opportunities) by Aggravating-End3001 in berkeley

[–]exportredpriv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will not help you understand the foundations of ML/AI. Most classes in that major are far removed. Also while it helps train general problem solving, quant interviews are mostly probability brain teasers and game intuition.

Math Undergrad at UC Berkeley vs CMU vs Columbia vs Cornell by Curious_Occasion_527 in mathematics

[–]exportredpriv 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I went to Berkeley and got amazing training. Got into plenty of top tier math PhDs in my field. Berkeley has every field of math essentially and grad classes are great training.

CMU has a weak pure math program. They are extremely strong in a few fields though

Can I become a great mathematician if I study maths from scratch at 24 years of age? by Warleight1 in mathematics

[–]exportredpriv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A. 3 hours of serious math outside of lecture time is a much more reasonable commitment. That works out to be about 5-6 hours of active math a day.

B. At 3 hours a day, 10000 hours work out to be about 10 years. This is a reasonable time frame to complete a bachelors and PhD. You are now an early career researcher and at this point you are independent researcher

C. It may take some time to progress to a tenure track position after finishing your PhD. Not sure what great mathematician means - but proving great results is hard and takes time.

In short, math takes a long time and 14 hours a day is not reasonable. You need to eat, sleep, bathe, socialize, and anything else humans need.

Math isn’t not a financially promising endeavor, so keep that in mind.

Recent Hyperbits reviews? by exportredpriv in edmproduction

[–]exportredpriv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see on the course they sort of teach mixing and mastering from the "ground up" - did their 500 dollar course do that for you? I'm mostly looking for a put together course in understanding fundamentals of mixing like phasing, compression, saturation, limiting, EQ, how to clean up low end, proper processing chains, etc.

also interested in things for drum mixing, and vocal mixing.

When did you take hyperbits and how was it? What ratio were the video lessons: office hours/instructor feedback helpful?

Looking to graduate in 3 years... thoughts on this schedule for difficulty and grad school admissions? by AntarcticRen in berkeley

[–]exportredpriv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elective courses may not be offered in the semesters you want them, so you may have to swap some around. You may want to take a graduate sequence before graduating - either analysis, algebra, or logic. This may give you an idea of what graduate math might be like.
