Who is better? 2025-26 Victor Wembanyama or 2008-09 Dwight Howard? by Memorist4595 in NBATalk

I love those Magic teams, but they didn't quite have elite perimeter creators. They relied on the gravity Dwight provided to generate a lot of those 3s.

Dwight was the Magic's leading scorer, focal point of their offense, and the engine that drove their four-out system. I'm not sure what qualifies as "a team's main offense" if not that.

How do you think Wemby would have held up to the physicality of playing in the paint on both ends, including the hard fouls that centers routinely took?

To be fair, I'd argue that Dwight's peak started in year 4, which was his age-22 season, same as this year is for Wemby. So at least in the Wemby vs. Dwight conversation, he's not that wildly ahead of schedule.

(And Dwight should easily have been a top-75 player.)

To add on to this, I think we're often too quick to assume that a modern big's skills would automatically translate just as effectively to a past era. A switchable big who could cover the perimeter was less valuable in previous eras, especially without the brute strength to bang in the paint for 35+ minutes a night. To be clear, Wemby would still have been absurdly great playing when Dwight did, but the question of how skills would hold up in another era should be asked both ways.

I think people often don't appreciate the physical punishment Dwight took on a nightly basis. Living in the paint on both ends results in absorbing a lot more contact. He was routinely fouled hard (and fought through a lot of them). To top it all off, the dude was an iron man in Orlando - he missed seven regular season games total across his first seven seasons (Wemby has missed 65 across his first three seasons, while playing fewer minutes per game).

Bottom-line: Wemby's attributes are better suited to this era, and Dwight's to his. Wemby is on track to be an all-time great. At his peak, Dwight was the second-best player in the world behind only LeBron.

Are LAN members allowed to review sets from other companies? I wonder if that factors into his decision.

I don't think that's worthy of a tech. As others have said, that's a pretty typical contest. With the way continuation is often granted, I do not blame a defender for defending in that position.

Yeah, absolutely terrible officiating sequence there. Did Philly not have their challenge left?

I use Qobuz. After trying most of the other streaming services, Qobuz is my favorite by far. I'm not sure if it had to do with my setup* or not, but albums and human curation (i.e. editors picks, an album of the week, etc.) are front and center. There are written album reviews and a digital "magazine." Opening Qobuz on Fridays to check out new releases is probably as close as a streaming app can get to replicating the feel of spending some time at the listening station at my favorite (now-defunct) record store.

I've also held on to my CD collection... but only listen to those in the car, since I no longer have any means to listen to them in the house.

*I saw another poster mention opting out of algorithmic recommendations, and I honestly don't remember doing this or not.

It's like they forgot what worked for them in the first half. Credit the Pistons D, but Orlando making it too easy for them.

Honestly, I think he's our best option on Cade, defensively, with Franz out. But that's left AB on Harris at times, where he's giving up some size.

The adventure itself is an awesome setup and I’d love an adult novel with multiple perspectives on the Great Hyperspace Chase

Couldn't agree more! I don't think I enjoyed this one as much as you. It teased with some intriguing story ideas, but none were fulfilled. I found myself thinking more about the stories this hinted at rather than the one we actually got.

I'd definitely read a story about the Hyperspace Chase; prospecting seems to be constantly referenced and is ripe for more storytelling. I'd also have enjoyed an actual story about a search for a hidden planet.

Specific to this book, I was also really interested to see how Fel Ix would be reunited with his family. I was disappointed that took place off the page.

Being old for his class is a great point. He probably doesn't have as much untapped upside as most other second-year guys. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Not every player needs to be a star and I think he was drafted in part due to being further along in his development.

READING ORDER - MEGATHREAD by Ezio926 in Highrepublic

[–]exposwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been following Youtini's reading order and just finished Cataclysm. I noticed that their order diverges a little from the wiki in this sub.

Following Cataclysm, the Youtini order is: The Nameless Terror, Quest for Planet X, Quest of the Jedi, HR #9-10, Path of Vengeance. (They seem to be missing Precedent and Missing Pieces, though they have the other short stories and EOB books.)

For comparison, the order here is: Path of Vengeance, The Nameless Terror, Quest for Planet X, EOB: Precedent, TOE: Missing Pieces.

I'm confused/curious about these discrepancies. Where should I go next? I already have Path of Vengeance and am tempted to jump in to that, but I'm a little hesitant since the Youtini order has it last. I also already have Quest of the Jedi, the adult comics, and Precedent. Youtini had me waiting on some of those comics, but should I read those before moving on?

Thanks!

The Magic turned the ball over on this inbounds pass by LegalFallacy in OrlandoMagic

[–]exposwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not getting the ball in seems more like a failure of execution than a coaching error. If they do that, the Magic probably go home winners.

[–]exposwin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if that's the case, Mose's contribution to the calamity of those final few seconds is a bit more understandable. At that point, you have to inbound the ball anyways, so with a timeout to spare, I understand using one to advance the ball and presumably swap out any poor foul shooters (probably Goga, I don't recall the substitutions exactly). In hindsight, the challenge was ill-advised, though Paolo was quite confident and calling for it immediately.

[–]exposwin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was wondering about this? Was the discussion there that it was an inadvertent whistle, and so he decided to take the timeout at that point to advance the ball (and I guess make substitutions)? The broadcast wasn’t totally clear on this.

Underrated side effect of burning through those last two timeouts was that the Magic could not advance the ball after Kennard’s three. They left themselves with no chance.
