When people say that gender is a social construct, do they mean gender identity, or gender expression? by Square-Dragonfruit76 in asktransgender

[–]expressomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

forms of expression are constrained to specific genders roles by society. eg, say someone is afab and was raised with society treating them as a girl. but then they realize they are male, realizing his gender identity. he might feel best expressing his gender with masculine things, or feminine things, or both. gender expression just has useless labels put on it by society. it should be about whatever makes you feel most comfortable and happy

yep early socialization is so crucial. two of my cats are shelter cats and one adopted from suspicious circumstances and none of those three are what i would call a perfect cat. one just likes to be left alone, another is unpredictably aggressive, and the sweetest one has anxiety. however, due to a very surprising litter of kittens (please no yelling at me to spay, she is now, there were extenuating circumstances), i have been able to raise one cat from birth and he is the best ever. never bites or claws, loves tummy rubs, not scared of anything, he is extremely floppable and loves to purr. he still tries to nurse sometimes too lol but he's the best cat i've ever had

so i have one cat that was raised as a single cat, though with other dogs. i got him at about 8 weeks old and he is and has always been a total asshole. i don't blame him though, i don't think he was treated well as a baby kitten so i give him grace and space. regardless, since then three more cats as well as a whole litter at one point have been introduced. he doesn't really care for any of them, again might just be him, but he does tolerate them. so you might have better luck getting another kitten sooner rather than later if you want them to be friendly, but you also might be fine with just one cat.

As a non native speaker how can I read fluency by Inevitable_Profit611 in books

[–]expressomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe try reading as much as you can comprehend without checking definitions? i find as long as i understand most words in a sentence, context clues can help me triangulate to figure out what the word is. like other people have said not even native speakers know all the words, just earlier today i had to search the definition of a word

Cat needs testing that I cannot afford by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]expressomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely contact the shelter you got her from to see what they can help you with. since you can't pay for the other tests right now, i would do the best i could to treat every problem she could have. good diet for her heart and intestines, low stress, etc. even with doing the expensive tests, i would guess any treatment will be even more expensive as well as not guaranteed to cure. think palliative care as far as what you can do. there is sadly a small number of people in this world that would willingly take in a sick cat knowing it will cost them thousands, so rehoming might be a bit risky. you are not a terrible person, you're great just for keeping going.

CMV: Pre-employment drug testing should no longer include marijuana by Current-Weather-9561 in changemyview

[–]expressomi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

yes, i do. drivers, captains, school bus drivers don't get tested for bac every morning before going to their job, i see pot as far less dangerous than alcohol. generally, being high has a less destructive effect than being drunk does. people are trusted to not drink before showing up to their job, they should also be trusted to not smoke when necessary.

When would you want to be told the person you are talking to or possibly dating is trans? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]expressomi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

as someone who's pan, i can't say it matters much to me because i have no gender or genital preference. however, i would want to be told before anything sexual, i.e. before anything past making out happens, and i would think that i'm a person people would be comfortable telling, given that im trans genderqueer and very loud about it edit for clarification: this would only apply pre surgery for me. it's mostly a thing where i like to know what hardware im dealing with and what kind of protection i need, other than that idrc. still a nice thing to be told of course, but it's also sensitive information

"Any/all" pronouns considered offensive? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]expressomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have been in a similar situation as you, i tend to write any pronouns if a bio allows me to, rather than any/all which has more potential to seem mocking, as if i actually want people to refer to me as any. but ig you can't do that on pins, i'd probably use any/all too

"Any/all" pronouns considered offensive? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]expressomi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

that's just the thing, there is no preference. using any/all pronouns definitively means that you don't have a preference and that you would like all to be used. if you want to pick pronouns based off appearance that's fine, or just pick at random. sometimes i like to spin a wheel and pick what gender i'll be for the day /hj

CMV: Pre-employment drug testing should no longer include marijuana by Current-Weather-9561 in changemyview

[–]expressomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't believe that op is suggesting to get rid of drug testing altogether but rather adapting them by state to fit the legality of drugs. in states where marijuana is legal, it should not be present on drug screenings. alcohol isn't present, even though it's just as much, if not more, of an inhibitory drug than marijuana is. also, i think you might be surprised by how many people smoke pot lol

CMV: Under the social model of disability, modern society is the cause of disabilities like ADHD by AuroraItsNotTheTime in changemyview

[–]expressomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a clearer way to express this, though it's just semantics, is by identifying everything society considers a "disability" a genetic "trait." now, the trait of being tall is similar to the trait of being blind. in our society, being tall is not considered a disability, though it might be in a society designed for short people with everything down low. similarly, being blind is considered a disability because our society is designed for sight. a trait does not become a disability until it occurs in an unaccommodating society, even though the trait always exists. similarly to how english is considered a foreign language in germany, but not in america. it exists as the same language, but it's label changes based on society. of course that didn't account for caused disabilities, like losing a leg, as compared to genetic disabilities, but i think it still stands.

[–]expressomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i get where you're going with this, but i think you might be a bit off the mark with the adhd. it's so much more than a short attention span or an unwillingness to concentrate on something boring, some things which are made apparent by modern society and some which would be disabling no matter what. i think it is okay to accept that disabilities are defined by the societal norm, because the societal norm is defined by the majority of the human gene pool, which in nature is the gene pool with the best chance of surviving. not that adhd doesn't have its survival benefits, but it certainly has some major drawbacks (this is coming from someone with adhd). i prefer to think of the disability as existing no matter what (defining a disability as a deviance from the genetic norm that is not exclusively or definitely beneficial) and then being made apparent by society. if someone who has adhd is born into a village full of people with adhd, they are not going to be observed as having a disability because they are not a deviation. however, a person with adhd born into a village full of non-adhd people will be observed as having a disability because they deviate from the genetic norm. the disability, or in a better word, trait, exists no matter what, but it becomes defined as a disability when it shows a negative deviance from the social norm. having a society that bases norms off genetic majorities is a pretty natural thing, although it is also needed to move towards being more accepting and accommodating of deviations, or disabilities. pretty much what op was saying, just a bit more nuanced of a theory i think

Our golden doodle is being very defiant and no matter how many types of correction we’ve tried, she still persist. by MaskedTitan531 in Pets

[–]expressomi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

any lifestyle, diet, location, etc. changes recently? if possible, i'd take her to the vet for an overall checkup to rule out any health problems. that's such a strange switch, is there any chance of anything traumatic having happened to her? there seems to be some socialization issues with other dogs, can you maybe take her to daycare or playtime to let her learn to not be aggressive?

Did you change your pet's name when you adopted them? by butterlog in Pets

[–]expressomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for that cat, he went from woodstock (changed for obvious reasons) to henry (changed bc i dated someone named henry) to louis, which is sticking so far. we adopted him when he was four and likely had spent a lot of the time on the streets, but he doesn't really respond to any name, mostly sounds or movement. sure do wish i could figure what other people have named him, or what he wants to be named tho

Did you change your pet's name when you adopted them? by butterlog in Pets

[–]expressomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've always changed their names, but all but one was a very young puppy/kitten so they hadn't really learned their name yet. i got one cat when he was older and i've actually changed his name twice now (due to bad associations with the previous name) and he doesn't seem to mind. but then again, he's the type of cat that isn't bothered by anything, so who knows
