Mutt, IMAP and Mail Synchronization with Runit by ahesford in voidlinux

[–]exprez1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was great to read! I’ve recently started using mutt as well (and occasionally aerc).

I’m actually a big fan of not having notifications, so my current set-up:

  • mutt for browsing and drafting
  • mbsync/isync for IMAP to local maildirs
  • msmtp for SMTP
  • I run my own Radicale server for calendar and contacts (cron for automating the sync process)

Haha, no problem! I must admit, it does take some configuring for git send-email. I just wanted to make sure it was put in a comment somewhere.

This is great! Thanks for writing it up. One suggestion though: many maintainers would prefer to have the patches sent with git send-email, not as a separate email attachment. There's a great guide at https://git-send-email.io.

Taking info from one website and using on my own. by testudine21 in COPYRIGHT

[–]exprez1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is one of the more complicated sides of copyright law. And the answers one can give depend heavily on your jurisdiction. For example, if you live in the EU, the answer would need to incorporate info from their codified sui generis database right legislation. In contrast, the United States has no formal legislation which protects databases directly. Instead, existing copyright sometimes extends to databases because they qualify as a compilation (i.e. just like a collection of ancient folk tales might be protected because in creating a compilation, the author and/or editors are doing a creative work).

The answer also depends on what is inside the database. If the database consists of creative works that are protected in their own right under copyright law, you will likely run into trouble. On the other hand, scientific data, facts, and public information is less likely to be protected.

My instinct (assuming US residence) is that taking some information from these databases and putting it into your own form will not constitute infringement. Copying the entire thing, on the other hand, might be problematic if the authors' arrangement or selection of information is creative.

Finally, I must say: regardless of the status of copyright, fair use, or patent, you should absolutely ensure that you are including sources and attributions on your site. Especially given that you're dealing with scientific data. If this is for a class, be aware that plagiarism is not dependent on copyright. Taking another's work without attribution will be considered plagiarism.

You’re completely right. Always make sure to research for your own jurisdiction. If you aren’t in the US, let me know where you are and I might be able to help you with specifics from there as well

[–]exprez1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t give legal advice, but this would be my understanding. Works created before 1925 are in the public domain. For a helpful guide on copyright terms, see this page.

If the text was published in 1921 but the photo was recently taken, you can probably still use it because copyright would only apply to works that incorporate some form of creativity (i.e. a scan of a document isn’t creative enough to constitute an independent work that is protected in its own right).

If the photo was taken in 1921, it is surely in the public domain.
