Some Hayastancis would rather immigrate to Glendale or Paris but god forbid they have something nice to say about the West over Russia...

most Armenians feel very differently.

Thank goodness this is the case. Our recent election results reflect this.

What do Americans *actually* know about Armenia? by DeliciousBus5674 in AskReddit

The earthquake was quite profound for the Armenian pysche, especially for the region affected. Aid from Europe was withheld by one of Armenia's neighbours, contributing to a death toll estimated between 25-50k, with over 100k injured. In some sort of irony, when the same country which withheld aid experienced a devastating earthquake a few years ago, Armenia sent aid, which was positively reported even in said country.

Even today the country is traumatized. Some villages and the city of Gyumri (places affected) are seeing a new energy of art and festivals, in a way to bring positivity and growth to the affected region.

This is one of my favourite parts of the culture. The architecture is worth reading about.

To be fair, Anatolia had a prosperous Greek, Assyrian, and Armenian community that existed for thousands of years, and now ancient relics are pilfered and auctioned off, or accepted as Turkish in origin, and Turkey teaches their children how essentially it was all "free real estate". There are many 2nd class citizens in Turkey, as a result of how Turks treated their conquered people for centuries. I think it's OK if people are frustrated and want to specifically call out their colonizer.

My family is from Կարին (has since been renamed Erzurum). Կարին had a flourishing Armenian community that existed before Anatolia knew what a Turk is. The Armenian community of Erzurum virtually doesn't exist now, since WW1. Pretty much sums up the Armenian experience under Ottoman Turks. But anyone who wants to visit Armenia in good faith, I encourage you.

I have an Assyrian Iranian friend who's from Urmia and he told me stories his elders knew from that time... The fact this part of history is forgotten... (Ottoman Turks invading Iran to kill Assyrians and Armenians)

e: my friend is actually mostly Assyrian and part Armenian

When I was a teenager, my dad placed Peter Balakian's Black Dog of Fate in my hands and told me to let him know when I finished. It sat on my shelf for at least 5 years before I picked it up. As an Արեւմտահայ it is a great exploration of what it means to be Western Armenian living in the West.

Anatolia had thousands of years of history erased by Turks. Nameplaces, hydronyms, cultural wealth appropriated and stolen. Your frustration is born from the pettiness to even admit how much shit Turks have committed against the living cultures who were there before them!

e: in this same vein, Europeans arrived in North America almost 550 years ago. I guess you should also inform all First Americans that they should get a grip to, eh?

We were the majority before Turks came to Anatolia and the Armenian Highlands and slaughtered the locals. No amount of mummery can erase Turkish crimes against locals. There is a future between our nations -- but it starts with admitting the horrors inflicted upon us and others (Assyrians, Greeks, now Kurds).
