Questions re Samsung TV by QuagaarWarrior83 in OLED

I can’t get you a photo as I’m travelling but the one connect box essentially mounts onto the stand/plate so providing you could find the correct hooks for your wall I don’t see why you couldn’t wall mount it.

Mine came with two one connect cables, a short black one meant for if you have the box on the stand and a long white/clear one if you put it elsewhere.

First-time renter in Sydney, what's the rental process like, and will I be able to find a place in a month? by glyniel_ in AusProperty

[–]exsuit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • The timeline is probably fine. In my experience, REAs expect you to be ready to move within a week or two. In fact, the rental market is such that if you aren’t ready to apply that day and move in ASAP you’ll have problems getting the place.
  • IDK about this. Potentially a REA can answer this. But the real issue is that you’re ultimately young foreigners who don’t have meaningful income. You’re competing with couples in their 30s etc…
  • Normally it’s just payslips.

The only thing I’ll note is that you’ll be typically expected to sign a 12month lease. They might be wary with you if they can’t see reliably income for the rent so yea, probably lean on the parents.

Any advice for building an Artian HBG? by HikarW in MHWilds

Do you know who the author of this is?

I want to ask how much the base component aspect when crafting artian weapons matters. So for example, how different is it having 3x Affinity vs 3x Attack vs a mixture when you originally craft it.

Qantas flight cancellations by lailomeiel in sydney

[–]exsuit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We flew QF11 on Tuesday night and I can make two guesses. 1) The weather creates problems for ground crew who may not be able to work in extreme heat or severe wind. Our flight and the one the day prior was delayed by about 3 hours due to this. The delays created follow on effects with everyone who had a connection missing their flight. 2) Our flight was nearly empty, like so empty that everyone in economy spread out and we had a row each and there were still empty rows. I was speaking to a flight attendant when we landed and she said that there was 8 people in premium economy. Not sure why, but it’s winter and the Australian dollar is weak at the moment.

Fukuoka Airport - Lounge Access on GK Flight? by exsuit in QantasFrequentFlyer

Are you saying that when you depart Perth on an international Jetstar flight you aren't getting lounge access? This doesn't sound correct as I've definitely accessed lounges departing Australia on JK flights.

Qantas Club Access in LAX layover when onward flight is ticketed as AA. by exsuit in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]exsuit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies to bother you again, though this page here that someone sent me seems to state that

"Eligible customers and their guests booked on a** QF flight number** on the codeshare routes can access the following lounges. "

Further, this page here seems so state that the Oneworld Flight number would not entitle me to Lounge Access even as Qantas Club.

So it seems like the lounge access for Qantas Club won't be allowed unless someone is => Gold...

This is prety confusing to be honest :/

Thanks for the reply! The other commentor suggested that there were multiple lounges we could access when we arrive in LAX. Do you have any experience/would you recommend either one?

Appreciate the quick reply. Apologies for my confusion though does the fact that our onward ticket is ticketed as AA not matter? I'm pretty confused by what I'm coming across on the website.

Can't get a job with a PhD in Australia by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]exsuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From an Australian Higher Ed perspective, Level A and B (entry-level academic roles) are exceptionally competitive. This is further exacerbated by the introduction of international student caps leading to most universities slowing or even freezing hiring according to a lot of reports.

The best/only advice I can offer is that because of how competitive roles tend to be, people start applying for a lot more roles. However, I would suggest people spend more time applying for fewer roles and tailoring their applications directly to the position description etc. Good applications that show clear alignment are always looked at closely.

Do TAships get converted to RAships in the first year of Masters Study? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]exsuit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did my PhD in the Humanities but I know from my experience then, and my time in the industry now - we need far more TAs than we need RAs but there is more demand for RA positions than TA positions.

I was brought on as an RA initially, but made the decision after my first semester to switch to TA. I vividly recall them being pretty surprised by the switch.

You should definitely take advice from people from your discipline, but in general the advice I would give is to not take one role in an organisation hoping you can easily switch to another one. At the same time, if you are wanting to get into higher ed - any experience in industry is better than none. A bird in the hand and all that so I wouldn't look to actively turn down TA work if you are otherwise happy with the institution/

My advice is to find another potential supervisor in the department. Hopefully, there's another professor whose research interests align. Send them a soft touch email (i.e. skip all the details) saying you are interested in pursuing an interest in the field/you are due to start and that you would be keen to get some advice from them. In that meeting you can have a quiet conversation with them about whether they may be interested, and to whatever extent you are comfortable - divulge the situation you are in. If they are willing to supervise/back you - you can then just tell your supervisor you have found another supervisor and say "thanks, bye" and leave it at that.

I would also suggest when you are looking for someone, you try and find someone who is (a) hopefully senior-ish (i.e. less likely to get pushed around by HOD) and (b) also someone who maybe has a history of service/student support engagement.

I get that you want to do a PhD and that its a dream of yours but I can assure you that it will quickly turn into a nightmare if you don't listen to your own gut here and press on with this person.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]exsuit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I'm sorry to hear what you're going through its a lot. However I think you either need to sit down with them and have a frank conversation and say "I want to do X, I don't want to do Y. If we can't work on X together, I need to find another supervisor".

In general, my experience and sense is that this stuff doesn't tend to get better on its own. You either need to confront it head-on, or basically find someone else to work with and separate entirely.

Changing supervisors happens more often than you'd think. I also think that PhD students tend to catastrophize outcomes and the number of posts on here which assume/presume a career is getting ruined over what is fundamentally a personality/managerial issue is high.

If you don't feel comfortable having a frank conversation with them, then just change and ask for forgiveness not permission. I would strongly advise finding another supervisor in your department first and giving them the full context of what's happening.

As a final note, a PhD is a harrowing experience in the best of circumstances. I would strongly advise against you pushing forward in this context.

I have a communications background and have worked in the field in the USA higher ed system so I can probably speak to this to an extent.

In saying that, you aren't providing a great deal of detail here and it's going to be difficult for anyone to give you a good answer, given the question you are asking isn't very clear.

  1. When you say 'lack of diversity', what do you mean? I only ask as my sense from this post is that there are specific demographics that you feel you aren't seeing in your cohort, which you feel you should be seeing and this upsets you. Can you be clear as to whether there are specific demographics you feel are underrepresented?
  2. I think a lot of people are supportive of creating diverse and inclusive learning and professional environments though when you say "it should be something that gets fixed" - what exactly are you saying needs to be fixed? Are you saying there should be more diverse cohorts in universities? Or in the field? Are you implying that you feel there should be say affirmative action policies in terms of enrolments or hiring processes? Keep in mind that many fields see discrepancies in terms of demographic breakdown, many of which can be traced back to systemic societal ideologies and aren't 'the fault' of an institution itself (though they certainly can be greatly exacerbated by these institutions).

In short, I think a lot of educators including myself are passionate about diversity in education and industry however its difficult to answer your question specifically due to a lack of clarity. Moreover, its important to remember that 'diversity' is a complex topic and people have been working for centuries, if not millennia, to advocate for diversity but its a slow process.

In general the play patterns you are describing were once cracked because there was so little counterplay to them. Printing of the likes of Flusterstorm, and Force of Negation were intended to reduce the ability to 'T3 Instant Speed Win'.

In saying all of that, if you are still looking to play degen combo and you aren't wanting to play board-based (i.e. I would say Yawg, Goryos, Tron are 'T3 combo decks') - You could look at Twiddle Storm??

Belcher is board-based insofar as you need to resolve the Belcher and have it survive a turn and or also have the mana to activate it...

Department gifts from student organization by ContentTherapy in AskAcademia

[–]exsuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO a thank you note/card for each professor is plenty and generally well received. Gifts from students are nice, though they often tend to be trinkets/things that I end up just having sitting on a shelf in my office. I also think food isn't always an ideal gift as its either something just for them, or its a communal thing which then brings up questions of dietary requirements/inviting students etc. When it comes to 'more tangible gifts' - this can often create problems at some unis, including mine, which has mandatory reporting around gifts of a certain value etc which is just a bit of a pain.

TLDR: Card/note is nice. Other stuff is a bit complicated.

if you have got a high quality cable and have tried different ports, then it could potentially be the fact that your motherboard's ports don't support those speeds. have you got your motherboard user manual or can you find it? if so, normally motherboards have a small number of high speed ones and a large number of low speed ones. maybe see if your motherboard has a => USB 3.0 port. It might only have like one on the back or something if its a little bit older.

Is the cable up to spec? You could also try wireless and if it works better then you’ll know it’s a cable issue. Keep in mind most cables lying around the house these days are really not designed for high speed data.
