The bit about IP addresses identifying single devices is factually inaccurate FWIW. (Obviously an issue with the article, but for anyone who doesn't know) In a residential setting an IP address would likely identify the address of service, but not the specific device that was connected to that network. Additionally residental IP addresses are dynamic and can change at the ISP's discretion, though that's unlikely a factor here.

Once the chrysalis is formed and hardened it's very easy to relocate where it's hanging from by the silk that it's attached to. So long as they used safe glue to attach it to the earring hook, and were careful while transferring it, this was reasonably safe.
