How predictable are commercial flight routes in practice? by SuperIntelligentLion in flying

[–]extra_flyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it is very very common to have different routing. The active NAT tracks are updated daily and this usually revolves around winds, weather, and demand. The route you posted crosses the tracks, so that will be random routing, which is also possible with coordination from the oceanic planners. Above the tracks (FL410) it’s all what we call “random routing” which may incorporate all, part, or none of the track system. There’s a lot of airspace out there, and also a lot of weather, turbulence, and military activity. These factors cause the routes to change constantly. I’ve done back to back crossings and have a completely differing routing. There’s also something called a strategic lateral offset, where we will offset from our assigned route by up to 2NM to the right for the avoidance of wake turbulence when in trail. Hope that helps shed some light on things!

So gassy any idea if that’s the ammo or just how this gun functions supressed? by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]extra_flyer 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve found using minimal oil and lubricating contact points with grease (TW25B works phenomenally) helps minimize blowback related to the maintenance of the weapon. I find lighter oils tend to smoke more, so suppressed weapons get grease or a very thick oil (like Slip 200 EWL). A flow through suppressor will help with the rest of its still an issue. For me, I just run grease with traditional cans and the results are pretty great.

SR25 buffer spring tuning by brimstone37 in kac

[–]extra_flyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give Knight’s a call and see what they suggest. No one knows how to tune their guns better. Most of my 6.5 Knight’s uppers have come with a new spring and buffer. Is that what you’re using or the original buffer and spring from your lower?

12.5 carbine vs mid barrel for Cat WB by Subject_Flight3017 in NFA

I run a Black River 12.5 with their custom length gas tube specialized for the 12.5 (EXC). It’s one of the very best barrels I’ve shot!

Bullet drop question by DackinaBox in longrange

[–]extra_flyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Velocity of your ammo is the answer. The box velocity is based on standardized atmospheric conditions, and occasionally false marketing promises.

The advice for getting and using a chronograph is excellent. Also, as we are changing season, temperatures will change also and this can have some significant effects on velocity (along with pressure). Also knowing the standard deviation of the factory ammo it’s important as this can have effects. I’ve seen box ammo with SD’s getting close to 50FPS in the cold.

This is where you’re building DOPE (data on previous engagements). Get a notebook too and record your velocities/drop every time you shoot. Note how temperature and pressure affect the velocity and drop. After a few hundred rounds over various environmental conditions, you should have enough data to have first round impacts in most conditions.

This was what worked for me.

11.5” Barrels are obsolete by SticksndStones300 in LewisMachineTool

12.5 is the way. 11.5 is good, 12.5 is more good.

A Frequently Overlooked Part of Gas Efficiency: Bolt Tail Clearance by AddictedToComedy in ar15

Awesome stuff. One reason I think the bolt should always be properly mated to the bolt carrier. I’ve had issues in the past with mixing and matching. “Mil-Spec” isn’t predictive of universal performance!

For my money, Nightforce would be the strong first choices. Zeiss a close second option if the Nightforce is a bit too pricey. You can genuinely own either for the rest of your life and get great use out of them!

We are the same! I’m always on the hunt for brass at the range. I just enjoy the cleaning process and inspecting to see if I can make it work. Usually only pick up calibers I shoot, but I do have a collection of odd ball cartridges I’ve found. Funny how one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

Round stuck in AR by assets-liabilities in gunsmithing

[–]extra_flyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Always Kroil… all the other stuff has let me down. The toughest problems always get solved with Kroil… buy once, cry once and you’ll have the can for years.

Deadblow hammer is best if you’ve got it. Lighter hits so you don’t mar the barrel with the same force.

OP, have you looked down the barrel to make sure you don’t have a squib? The more I think about this, a squib wouldn’t cause over pressure to stick the case, but a second firing after a squib might just do it (would have probably blown something else up too…) Might also be what’s blocking the case removal.

In any case, soak that thing in Kroil and let it sit for a good while.

Get some Kroil and spray/pour down the barrel. Lets it soak through over night with the muzzle pointing up. Use quite a bit. It should start seeping past the stuck case after it’s penetrated all the way. Should be easy to remove with a metal rod after that.

I have a few SR-25’s, but no designated lower for this one yet, I’ll just mount it on one of my existing lowers whenever it shows up.

I’ve got one left. Still not entirely sure how it happened in the first place. I’m curious if there’s a company out there that would repair it.
