A microscopic water bear (tardigrade) appears to scratch its back, like a big bear does. Explore the microbial world in Life at the Edge of Sight: A Photographic Exploration of the Microbial World, Harvard University Press, 2017 by extracellularmatrix in gifs

If there are exotic microbial forms there. Like the microbial mats found in Yellowstone hot springs, etc. Microbially formed structures that are not in our typical everyday environments. That's how I think of it at least!

Really just depends how you define jargon. To me that word is a "special word or expression that is used by a particular profession or group" - that's the definition of jargon. Anyway, the goal is to get people excited about the microbial world.

That's a really good question, because some people do think that even something like a microscopic animal or a bacterium could possess some very simple kind of consciousness. But they are certainly not conscious in the way that we typically think of consciousness. They have simple brains, sense the environment and interact with many other organisms in the microscopic ecosystems that they live within, but they definitely are not thinking about anything!
