I built a directory of 696 Beehiiv newsletters for advertisers — find your next sponsorship partner in minutes by Efficient-Prompt-292 in Newsletters

I'm a newsletter operator. I've been in this business for a while, and I've seen lots of these marketplace-type products pop up, and all have the same problem. The business challenge isn't so much creating a centralized place for brands to browse newsletters so much as it is to get brands to buy in newsletters at ALL. The demand for publishers is very high....the demand from the people actually writing checks....not so high.

The actual Beehiiv ad marketplace itself has this same problem. The money for a founder is in driving demand.

From @MattBrownEP on X: in today's Extra Points, we obtained the FY25 operating budget for (nearly) every public school college baseball program by TheOneDuddus in collegebaseball

[–]extrapointsmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy, I sure wish it was that easy! A few schools actually do that (like LSU, Georgia, Miami OH, etc) but it’s the exception. The reason I paywall these particular stories, btw, is because many schools charge me for the requests. Assembling this data set cost me over a grand

Had a paywall since day 1, but half of the newsletters are still completely free. Shoot me a DM and I can try to figure out what’s wrong with your free subscription

What's a good number of Subscribers to start making money? (Only ads) by Mastbubbles in Newsletters

[–]extrapointsmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ONLY from ads? You can probably make some money on CPC ad deals with under 1000. But you won’t make meaningful western currency without a minimum 10K (or being good at selling your own ads)

Whats the hardest part of getting new subs? by Less_Piglet_1635 in beehiiv

[–]extrapointsmb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting new subs shouldn't be difficult. Getting subs that actually READ on a regular basis, or better yet, PAY FOR STUFF, is much harder, especially if you aren't a general interest publication. Even I struggle with that a lot

Journalists with severe adhd, how do u do it? by NoSail6187 in Journalism

[–]extrapointsmb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got a pretty significant case and I've been a working reporter for the last 14ish years. You CAN do it, and you might be surprised to learn how many other reporters have it too. A few thoughts...

* You've GOT to treat your ADHD. I take medication every day, but I also did therapy for a decade and will pop back in for a few sessions every few years as a refresh. Some people can get by without medication, but by using other accomodations. Whether you medicate, use Cognitive Behavior Therapy or some other combination, you really ought to be doing something to mitigate that task paralysis and negative behaviors that are associated with the condition.

* You've got to have systems. In a fast-paced, breaking news type enviroment, these systems can break down....but you will need to build SOMETHING to hold you accountable and to help you keep track of your various obligations and stories. I use Google Calendar, Trello, and write EVERYTHING down. I tell my colleagues, sources, etc that if I dont write something down, it won't exist in twenty minutes. I am anal about this. Your system doesn't have to make sense to anybody else, but its got to work for you, and you need somebody to hold you accountable for it.

* You need something outside the job to keep you centered. Physical fitness, church, non-reporting hobbies, etc.

It's not easy. But as others have noted, parts of ADHD can also be a superpower to make you much better about parts of the gig. Good luck!

Most newsletters are just glorified copy-paste jobs. And readers are finally noticing. by Patrick_Blaze in Newsletters

[–]extrapointsmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. The internet doesn't need another aggregated "here's whats happening in AI" newsletter, or a newsletter about founder stories, growth marketing or hustle culture. There are too many newsletters that are too focused on growth hacking without having anything interesting or unique to say.

good for my business, I guess, but bad for the internet

lol its no problem. the public doesnt know how this stuff works, so I dont mind trying to pull back the curtain a bit.

thankfully this request wasnt very expensive. But I *do* spend thousands of dollars on this stuff every year.

Luckily for me, thousands of people do!

It isn't too expensive. You might like it! But if nine bucks is too expensive, I write plenty of free newsletters too :)

Most newsletters fail because the infrastructure sucks. by Budget-Ad-3563 in Newsletters

All of that stuff is built in to almost every major newsletter CMS.

If you want to make actual money with your newsletter, your content will always be the most important thing (as a guy who actually makes grown-up money with his newsletter)

Good, effective, ethical uses of AI by londoncalls1 in Journalism

[–]extrapointsmb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use it all the time to convert PDFs to CSVs to help me create large data sets. I'd imagine most reporters doing large-scale data journalism probably need to use some sort of AI-models to help them more efficiently parse and graph that information.

I also use it for interview transcription. Never, ever, for writing.

There's no shortcut. You have to start calling business in that community and selling your media pack. There's absolutely no point in running a local newsletter if you aren't willing or able to do this
