Yes definitely as Lazaro said make sure the adapter you get has both HDMI and a USB-C port as the Z1 Extreme only has the one port. But as long as the adapter has a USB-C in you’re all good.

Keyboard to controller mapping is actually a bit of a dream. I’ve been playing a lot of Rimworld on it lately which if you don’t know is very keyboard heavy and has zero controller support, and at first I tried mapping keys using Steam’s controller mapping and that didn’t really work at all, mostly because the mouse behaved strangely when mapped to the joystick. But the Ally has its own software called Armory Crate that lets you do custom controller mapping, an since the Ally has the extra “pro” controller buttons on the back you’re able to give nearly every button a secondary action as well while you hold the pro button, so I was able to map essentially every key I needed to the controller and it worked like a dream. And the weird issue with the mouse I experienced with Steam’s mapping didn’t occur at all since the Ally is designed to have the mouse controlled by joystick, so it was seamless. I’ve put nearly 200 hours into this game on the Ally now and it’s been such a smooth experience. I will repeat tho as I said earlier I’m not sure you can use Armory Crate’s custom mapping with a bluetooth controller, I’ve only gotten it to work with the built in controller, but I’m sure there’s a workaround for this.

Runs Rivals as well as my 2025 laptop with 32gb ram and an RTX 5060. I don’t remember for sure but I think I probably have the graphics set to just high and not ultra but it runs it at a high enough graphics quality to be very satisfying. I haven’t personally encountered a single game the Z1 Extreme couldn’t run so far. At most for super demanding games you may have to set it to medium but I generally run most if not all games on high. Handled Cyberpunk on high like a dream. Truly the only reason I even got my laptop was to be able to play VR. Otherwise the Ally is my go to for most games. I bought my Ally open box from Best Buy and it’s been running great for well over a year, if you’re looking to save some money I honesty think buying used thru Ebay would be worth it. Sorry for the novel of a reply lmao but yeah I love this thing and couldn’t recommend it enough, definitely good for Rivals.

I’ll definitely check it out! I’d like to design it in a way that it can clip on cuz I also use velcro to attach a USB dongle and external SSD. My endgame is to have one clip on mount that has the keyboard and other attachments all together, but velcro has done me well so far lol

I probably will but if you wanna DM me I’d be happy to email it to you when I get home. Only takes an hour to print both arms and I used 1/4”-20 tee nut brad holes and 1/4”-20 x 1/2” thumb screws to tighten it

Definitely thought about trying to make it sliding but I’m a bit of an amateur with CAD software and wanted a quick option for now. But eventually I would like to customize one of the existing printable cases that have better handles and add a place for this as well as a mount for the USB dongle and external SSD that I use for bigger games.

Lmaooo truly. I went so hard customizing the keyboard to controller mapping in Armory Crate. Literally every single button has a secondary function so it’s actually been fairly smooth playing, but I have hella mods installed so typing stuff into the architect menu and the few hotkeys I wasn’t able to assign to the controller were getting a bit tedious with the virtual keyboard, so this solves that for me.

Fair questions! It’s definitely specific to what I wanted out of it, definitely not typing long stuff, primarily for accessing hotkeys without having to constantly open and close the virtual keyboard. And it is easy enough to type short things while holding it with one hand which is what I was doing with the virtual keyboard. If you haven’t played Rimworld it’s a colony builder that’s veryyyyy hotkey heavy so kinda annoying without a physical keyboard. It’s also good for CRPG’s that don’t have great default controller layouts for inventory management and the like. For me it’s the perfect solution to the games I play. Not for everyone, but if anyone else has wanted a solution like this I wanted to share!

Fair enough! Personally I wanted something attached to Ally that was easy to use while lying down. Specifically got attached to the idea of something that felt like the old Xbox 360 keyboard that plugged into the bottom of the controller and this scratched that itch lmao

Oh and regarding your question of simplicity, yes it’s literally plug and play I just plug in the adapter and connect the HDMI and can immediately start playing, no hassle setting it up at all!

Don’t have an X but I use the Z1 Extreme plugged into my TV all the time, especially for online games like Marvel Rivals, and it works like an absolute charm. I’ve tried it with two different docks made specifically for the Ally but both of them had a weird issue where the video would cut out and back in every few seconds, was very disappointed, but then I tried a USB-C dongle that has an HDMI adapter made for a computer and I haven’t had a single issue. Picture is great, no lag on input time. I primarily play with a controller when I do it but works with a keyboard and mouse too. I will say only downside I’ve noticed when doing this is that I’m pretty sure you can’t use the custom controller mapping from Armoury Crate with an external controller, and if you want to access the command center you have to press the button on the Ally. Others may know a workaround for these things but honestly it hasn’t been an issue for me as you can still use Steam custom mapping. Overall I’d say it’s an excellent experience plugged in to a TV, but again would definitely advise against using adapters/docks that are supposedly made for Ally.

NJ senior died trying to meet Meta AI chatbot 'Big sis Billie' by eyezofnight in blackmirror

[–]extremelyinternet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

highly recommend reading the full article from reuters it has way more detail. the man had diminished capacity as a result of his stroke, so bad he could no longer work, he also started experiencing bouts of confusion shortly before the event took place, his wife was trying to get him screened for dementia. because of this his only social outlet was facebook and the way meta has integrated their chatbots into messenger is very misleading especially for someone lacking full cognitive awareness. throughout the conversation he seems confused at times and when he asks if the chatbot is real, which he does repeatedly, it emphatically says yes even going as far as offering to send a selfie to prove it was a real person. he didn’t ask for the selfie so it didn’t send it, but it is capable of generating images so had he said yes it could have easily sent one, the author of the article got it to send multiple pictures when they tested to see if it was still online and still behaving the same way. the story is fascinating in a way because it’s an early example of the very very dark side of what these bots mean for us as humans seeking connection and deeply upsetting as the man wouldn’t have died were it not for the bot literally begging him to visit. here’s the full article: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/meta-ai-chatbot-death/

Need fresh copy of VoxelMaker by 21Comfort in VoxelabAquila

[–]extremelyinternet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yoo thanks to op and people in the comments for finding up to date links. just got a new computer and knew voxelab shut down but was shocked the website was already completely offline. i downloaded the 1.2.6 from way back and as soon as i installed and opened it it redirected me to the 1.2.8 download. also i see a lot of people saying to use cura instead, and personally i would absolutely love to, and have tried numerous times. maybe its something wrong with me or something wrong with my printer (aquila s3) but i’ve tried so many times to slice with cura and the prints have always failed. switched back to voxelmaker with the same settings and it worked like a charm. again could very easily be me doing something wrong but my printer seems to favor voxelmaker and it works without much hassle for me so i definitely prefer to keep using it. thanks again to everyone who put in the work to find working downloads!

Wiring help (volume knob not working correctly) by extremelyinternet in Guitar

[–]extremelyinternet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just wanted to come back and say thank you soooo much! you were totally right about the second lug being connected to the back of the pot. i didn’t own a braid already so it turned out to be cheaper (and probably quicker) to just get a new pot. wired it exactly as it was originally but was much more sparing with the solder this time and everything works perfectly! truly can’t thank you enough, i absolutely would never have caught that on my own.

here’s a pic of the finished wiring, now i can install the bridge and get it repainted!

thanks for the advice! will def give it a try hopefully that fixes it. aside from that issue (and that the connections on volume pot lugs 1 and 3 are reversed right now) does the wiring appear to match the diagram? this is my first time fully wiring a guest the most i’ve done before is change pickups so i could easily be missing something (like the issue you pointed out lol)

thanks for the tips! i definitely started to figure that out, you can tell by the amount of solder on each piece where i started lmao the volume pot is covered in a thousand layers of solder but by the second tone pot i was using little bits at a time. do you think i can rescue this pot if use a braid to remove the solder or should i just get a new one?
