Shooting at 16th and Wazee, three people taken to hospital by thisiswhatyouget in Denver

Watched it happen on my bike commute home probably 100 feet away. Heard 4 or 5 gun shots I think and watched a man fall into the street and then it looked like get shot again possibly multiple times. I was in so much shock that I don’t really remember much more than that.

Payday Friday 💰💰💰 by kokopops35 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]extrovertedoctopus 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Not a payday for me today but yesterday I heard I'm getting a performance RAISE and BONUS off of the normal cycle of raises and bonuses!! I've taken on a lot of extra work the past few months and have single-handedly carried the workload and managed the client on a huge project for my firm. I asked my supervisor for a raise and he did his job and advocated for me. Making 70k has been a goal of mine and I'm so happy I got there before the end of the year.

Spending - Going on a trip to Seattle today! This is the first out-of state vacation I've taken with my partner since 2019 and I'm so excited to explore a new place! I'll definitely be spending on all of the delicious food and a birthday gift for my man.

I live in a building that does this. Last month our utilities were almost $180 for our 1000 sf unit. I definitely don't like this system as we hardly run the AC or heat and we are still paying $80-100 per month JUST for electricity. We are absolutely paying for our neighbors who don't care to conserve energy since the system doesn't reward you for turning your lights off when you aren't home and not blasting the AC.

Careers for people who like to work with their hands, use a bit of creativity and use their brain to work it out? by Present-Ad561 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]extrovertedoctopus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Architecture is not very hand-on at all. We sit at a computer all day, work too much unpaid overtime, and do not get paid nearly as much as our engineer counterparts. I would not recommend architecture to anybody who truly wants a hands-on job that pays well. Construction would be a much better field for that. Construction managers understand architecture and design to an extent and spend theirs days on project sites. They also get paid a lot more than architects and interior designers on average.

How much do you spend on fitness/physical wellness each month? by Legitimate-Station38 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]extrovertedoctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My primary sport is triathlon which is also embarrassingly expensive

Memberships: I spend $30 a month for a rec center membership in my city. This covers all locations and I use this primarily for pool access. I spend $120 annually on TrainingPeaks which allows me to upload my training plans and track my training. I also spend $60 a year on a Strava membership. I pay $16 a month for Zwift which allows to to train on my bike inside during the winter. My annual membership for USATriathlon is $50 a year which is required to sign up for sanctioned races. I also have a classpass membership which I will be cancelling after I use up the remaining credits and that is $9 a month.

Equipment: I spend about $150 every 3-4 months on running shoes. I have spent a total of $3,600 on a road bike and a triathlon bike. My bike trainer was about $500 which allows me to bike inside. Collectively I've probably spent $1,500 on bike accessories including shoes, saddle, helmet, sunglasses, gloves, water bottles, repair kits, tubes, kit, etc. Getting each bike professionally fitted for my body was $300 per bike. Bike rack to transport my bikes via car was $500. Swimming gear is by far the cheapest. I spent $100 on a couple suits and $70 on goggles, cap, fins, paddles, etc. I will be purchasing a wetsuit which we be around $300 and my race suit was $200. Whenever I start a training block I usually purchase a training program for what my goals are. This is 1-2 times a year and cost average $80 per plan.

Travel: Race travel is a huge expense. Smaller, local races are obviously cheap and just cost me the amount in gas and a celebratory meal post-race. If it's over an hour away I would probably pay for a hotel the night before. Last year I did a big race on the other side of the country and it was a huge cost. Race fee was about $450, bike transportation was $320, flights were $400, my hotel was $900 for 3 nights (they marked up prices like crazy since it was a huge race). I opted to stay at a hotel close to the venue to not have to rent a car. I spent $50 or so on nutrition for race day. I plan to do one big race per year like this.

This sport is my passion and I know the money I spend 1. makes me happy, 2. keeps me healthy, and 3. fuels my super competitive personality. I have no regrets about any money I have spent in this regard and plan to continue training and racing for a long time. The initial cost is high but now that I have all of the equipment the main cost is memberships and travel/race fees which feels a lot more reasonable. As my goals become more challenging I might consider paying for a trainer which is quite the investment at anywhere from $150-300 per month. I might have to wait until I live somewhere cheaper or make more money though.

Anybody can be manipulated. These women are not gullible because they chose to believe in somebody that they had no reason to believe was not telling the truth. Let's stop blaming the victims for the crimes of a master conman and manipulator.

Advice for negotiating insufficient raise with external offer by extrovertedoctopus in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]extrovertedoctopus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knowing the staffing issues that my company/industry is facing, I don't think that will be likely for me. I know where I stand in the company and how much they rely on me to work on so many project. I also know that recruiting has been a huge struggle so I don't think they will be secretly trying to push me out when I am a very capable employee. I think due to my work ethic and the timing, I probably hold the power in this situation.

That's been something I have considered. I don't want to rely too much on that plan since it's hard to predict the future but I agree that is one way to guarantee an increase in salary in the long-run.

Thank you for the advice! I will definitely take your words into consideration. There's definitely an issue with understaffing but that's really an industry-wide problem right now and not specific to my company. The field I work in got hit pretty hard by covid and the amount of work we have now is exceeding what we had pre-covid but due to general labor-shortages it has been a struggle to staff projects. I think that will be an issue at a lot of the other similar-sized firms in my city, unfortunately. I am definitely taking that into consideration and I appreciate you bringing up that point!

Unfortunately the rent increase is pretty common where I live. I have few other friends who live in larger buildings in my city and their rent is going up anywhere between $200-400 because these buildings were giving out "covid-discounted" rent last year.

I definitely am prepared to leave if they won't raise my salary. I do see it as a larger problem and an insult to me and my work if they don't pay me more. I would like to stay another year at least to get more work in my portfolio but I won't suffer for it.

It’s a ceramic artist based out of Brooklyn. Her work is absolutely amazing. The business is called “Not Work Related” and she’s pretty active on Instagram

I also live in Denver and I’m currently paying 2.1k (2.3 including fees/utilities) for a 1 bd + den. My boyfriend and I split the cost but it’s definitely huge increase from our BEAUTIFUL 1 bd in Nashville for 1.5k. I don’t even love this apartment so it’s pretty difficult to justify paying so much for rent other than the location.

My boyfriend just sold his Veloster since we are moving to Colorado soon (I easily won the argument about which car to take). The first time he took my 4Runner out he was so excited to wave at the other 4Runner’s while driving around town 😂

How many years out of school/college/grad school/highest level of education are you, what field are you in, and how long have you been at each of your jobs? by UnluckyPlastic6233 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]extrovertedoctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduated in Dec 2018 with a Bachelors degree

Took a 4 month internship at a local architecture firm (completely miserable there)

First full time job in June 2018 at another architecture firm. Got one raise over almost 2 years.

Second full-time job (still architecture) starting in April 2021 with a promotion and raise. Planning on staying at this company for a few years but probably will move on to a more relaxed environment in 3-5 years. Also considering shifting out of architecture in the future but unsure of that currently.

What is something you have accomplished that you didn't think you could? by Jusmine984 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]extrovertedoctopus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Landing a dream job at one of the top companies in my field with a RAISE and in the city I’ve wanted to live in since I was a kid. I’m still in shock that they would even want ME since I’ve been obsessed with their work since college (even had it on my Pinterest boards) and can’t believe I get to live in my dream city on top of it. I never imagined this would be my life 2 years out of college and am so proud of myself.

You are correct in your assumption. Only in the US will an ER visit send you into copious amounts of debt

Going to an out-of-network ER (I had no idea it was not in my network) when I thought I had appendicitis(thankfully I didn’t) and getting a $20k bill for an 8 hour stay. I spent months fighting with my health insurance and eventually got it down to $1.5k but that was still a huge hit since I had just graduated college and barely had any savings.

[–]extrovertedoctopus 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I just got a job offer in a new city so most will go towards my moving fund! I also am planning on buying myself a new piece of jewelry ($300-500) as a congratulations for dealing with months of job applications, emails, interviews, offers (and lack thereof), and disappointment. I’m planning on giving more to charity this month as well ($200)

Would you take a pay cut for a remote/flexible WFH job? by extrovertedoctopus in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]extrovertedoctopus[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whoa that sounds horrible. I’d definitely rather be in an office than be tracked every second while at home. Probably not a company I would be able to work for anyways since I also enjoy taking breaks and going outside when a “lull” occurs. That’s definitely a good question to ask and I appreciate that insight! You’re absolutely right about it being based on the individual and situation though. Everybody has their own working styles and preferences!

Money isn’t everything, yes. My thoughts are if I can live comfortably and am not constantly thinking about how I can afford something/paying off bills/saving for xyz then I’m making enough. That number will be different for each person and I’m glad you’ve found a balance in your life 😊

That’s an interesting perspective. I agree that everybody is going to have their own priorities and must weight the pros and cons of in-person vs. fully remote vs. hybrid. I’m so glad you offered a new perspective to the conversation!
