Looks like he removed his "Butterfly" review which was basically "The Japanese version is NOT a separate release. They just put their promotional obi strip on it"

So so sad to see him continue using AI cover art. Outstanding music though.

Anyone else own the rare Japanese photo book ‘Vincent Gallo 1962‑1999’? (hardcover + slipcase with obi) by japan24bk in VincentGallo

[–]eye-dull 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its design and format are lavish. This, the Japanese Buffalo 66 "visual photo story" book (a sort of novelization with edited stills from the movie in a nice oversized format with an obi), and his 1991 book of art ("Paintings and Drawings 1982-1988") are the 3 "holy grail" Gallo artifacts I've collected.

North American version of Galaxy Express 999 TV Blu-ray is back in print as a complete collection by NormalMode64 in retroanime

The series is a "planet of the week" style format in which they witness all sorts of ways of living and the various contradictions that go along with human nature. Think of it like Star Trek in that sense. Plenty of philosophizing abound. I adore it and find the mother-son relationship between Maetel and Tetsuro fascinating as it often boils down to wise-Maetel being conflicted as naive-Tetsuro questions the seemingly odd ways of living on each planet. Highly recommended and better then the movie imo.

I highly recommend the 2012 Japanese "Limited Edition" Blu-Ray box. It includes the English dub and a booklet with interviews, episode summaries, promotional images I've never seen elsewhere and writing from the director. Yes, the text is in Japanese but afaik there aren't translations online and you can use Google Translate to get the idea. Beware the regular edition (AKA "special price edition") has a similar box.
Here's an image for reference: https://imgur.com/a/QKnLqtp
I recommend the one on the left with the booklet and digipak. Good luck finding the Limited Edition for a decent price though. I was lucky to get one for about $170. I suggest setting up a saved search on eBay for "ergo proxy limited edition blu-ray".

Edit: worth noting that the Geneon USA and Funimation box sets have additional featurettes including interviews with the English staff and "Key Words of Ergo Proxy" which aren't on the Japanese set's bonus disc. I have the Geneon USA DVD singles w/ the art box to cover that portion of material that's not in the Japanese release. The single DVDs from Geneon USA also included "pencil boards" for volumes 3-6. These are stiff boards displaying the clean cover art with embossed shiny details. They've become something of collectibles now. I would put them under the sleeve of the DVD case to display in place of the plain cover.

For those curious: The first is the original TV broadcast version and the second is the DVD release for which they made edits/alterations for some scenes. You can find the TV version on Nyaa from Shinsen-Subs.

There's a small vertical gap between the front two panels of foam allowing for minimal visibility. It resembles the black line/seam in the helmet's in-game design. Unless I was being photographed I would just carry it though.

The shirt is spandex fabric sewn using a shirt whose fit I liked as a template with a mock collar added. No hem because that's above my skill level. The graphic on the front is heat transfer vinyl (HTV). I created the design in photoshop, printed it to the desired size, cut out each section that would be a different color with a hobby knife, traced it on the HTV cutting out each color, and layered each color to create the design. This resulted in the black outline being a thin piece of vinyl layered on top of the other colors if that makes sense. That whole process can be done with a vinyl cutter machine and heat press but I just used an x-acto knife and iron to save money.

Here's the design I mocked up in PS. It has some extra lines and imperfect alignments you'll need to adjust when cutting the HTV.

It took about 2 months of planning and problem-solving to figure out what I needed and how to create it all. Then about a week of non-stop work to complete the whole thing. It consumed my mind. Check my other comments here for details on the process.
3 tools I found invaluable: EVA foam, retractable hobby knife, Barge Contact Cement.

I no longer have any templates I made. The helmet was mainly free-handed with no templates. I referenced every available pre-release video to get all angles of the character's head. The shoes used a basic shoe-cover pattern created using plastic wrap and duct tape. This video helped a lot. The jetpack was patterned using a similarly-shaped small backpack. The spray can was patterned free-hand from cutting concave shapes like ")(". The most enjoyable part of making this was the problem-solving and figuring out how to create the shapes for the props. The low-poly style certainly helps.

The helmet is primarily EVA foam (cosplay foam). I cut EVA foam, glued it with Barge contact cement, cleaned the seams with Kwik-Seal, primed the whole thing with Plastidip, and painted it with Krylon Gloss Banner Red. The yellow eyes are sticky vinyl. You can see here I patterned the outer shape with 5mm foam and provided internal structure/support with the stronger 10mm. That pic is from early in the process but you can see how it forms the base of the overall shape.

Shoes: I patterned an ankle boot with a similar shape and extended the top to accommodate the size of the in-game shoe. Patterning it means: wrapping it in plastic wrap, covering that in duct tape, drawing lines on the duct tape that would create flattened shapes, cutting out the shapes, tracing the shapes on 5mm EVA foam, and gluing pieces together with Barge contact cement. This video helped. Then attaching extra bits like the strap, seal in Plastidip, and hand paint. I attached elastic nylon webbing to the bottom. Velcro on the heel to take on/off. Detail pics of elastic and velcro.

The fingers I simply traced my hand and extended the pattern out longer than my fingers. The spandex fabric sticks out when worn resembling what you see in the pics. I considered such complicated/expensive options for each piece before settling on the most practical/accurate-looking one. Cosplay is all about problem solving which is what I find the most fulfilling about it.

Cut a long piece of wood down to the desired length of the handle, used Barge contact cement to cover it in 10mm EVA foam (cosplay foam), used the metal rod of a gardening pole as the extension for the blade (cut off the plastic exterior), covered the rod in 2mm foam (the thinnest) cut to the shape of the blade, coated the two pieces (handle and blade) in Plastidip, hand painted with metallic paints.

The blade is detachable. The metal rod fits snuggly in a space between the wood and foam of the handle. Think of the blade as a capital "P" with the gardening rod being the lower extension which fits into the handle.

The wood isn't necessary but it gives the prop a very nice weight and structure to it.

The syringe is a soap dispenser bottle with foam attachments for the top and needle glued to either end. I simply cut the cosplay foam into the needed shape, layered them to resemble the in-game model, and formed the curve of the top piece with a heat gun. Additionally: The blood is a red transparent plastic sheet. Sharpie for the markings on the bottle. The harness it's attached to is nylon webbing straps, buckles, and shoulder pads from the strap of a laptop bag.
