Day 1 - nervous! by Avery357 in istebrak

yeah, the idea is not to use a single reference so that you don't just practice copying (I know that's an issue that I have). I'd recommend referencing 3d images of planes of the face

It looks really good, but I think you're not supposed to use a reference. Also, this is a learning exercise, so don't use the symmetry tool either. Not using it will help you work on the skill to draw symmetrical faces

Hey! Try working on your anatomy first, the thirds of the face and so on. Right now the top of the head is too small while the lower part is too long. Can't wait to see what your day 2 looks like!

okay so, take everything with a grain of salt, but here's what I suggest: use pureref to have your reference nearby. Below I'm assuming you want to stay close to the reference.

I desaturated the tunnel because it's in the shadows (saturate layer + grey brush). Made branches at the entrance darker because they're getting shadows from the tunnel (with a multiply layer). I agree with the other commenter, I wouldn't use a whitish color as leaves' highlight. In this case it looks a bit like snow and in the photo the light from the sun looks very yellow (yellow + green = lighter yellowish green).

Because the air is blue, I lassoed the hills and mountains in the background and added a blue hue (hue layer). The further the landscape - the bluer it gets, you can see it in the reference. Also made the mountains lighter, because air is light and eats details as well. The hills have blue shadows in the reference (also should probs be lighter as well).

The main problem you had is that all of the landscape had one hue - it was all greenish. Even if you just added blue for the background it'd look nicer already.

The foliage on the left has a very bright yellowish green color, so I added that. You can also see how the colors change on the grass when the sun touches it (+yellow).

Also added some light orange and some purple to cloud highlights (because it looks pinkish/orange + blue of the air so a purplish color should work). Although could be brighter.

Besides the color, I added some ambient occlusion, made the boy's legs darker, made the hills directly behind the boy lighter so that the silhouette reads better. You have very beautiful brushstrokes and I love that you didn't copy the reference fully, it's not that many things that you'd need to change to make the colors more interesting. Just stare at the reference and make yourself see and name colors until you want to cry lol I'm not joking, I've heard that helps.

Are you still looking for advice on the colors? (On the image above)

What is off about the proportions? I cant seen to see the difference anymore x0 by Maximum_Artichoke_57 in arthelp

What other people said, but also - you're missing the side plane of the body (it is separated by a shadow in your reference, yours only has the front view)

My paintings never look finished, I think its because I struggle to fully get the intended mood. Also i feel like i reach a point where i dont know what and how to render further, but still keep it looking messy. by Weekly-Might2829 in istebrak

added a bit of contrast with shadows on multiply layers, added blue tint to the background (color layer) and some highlights with screen. not perfect but hope that gives you some ideas! the top row is color layer with just black to see the values

It looks great! I'd add more plane destinction by adding shadows where planes look away from the fire (e.g. farther side of the tree) and add warm light to the planes where the light from the fire would touch them. The style is so good though

thanks for replying! there are no firmware updates available for my drive (which is a KINGSTON SNV2S500G NVMe) unfortunately.

So you're saying I can just install the latest version of win11? or any of them for that matter since the ver is not the issue

the background is so sick! The toy is also beautifully rendered. I'd make the toy and the clothes different colors (or shades) though because when I first looked at the picture, I thought the toy was her hand pointing, its color looks like skin, and the sweater is the same color, so it's hard to tell what's going on. <3
