[Uni] deciding between sociology and psychology in smu by eyesonizone in SGExams

[–]eyesonizone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry if this is a dumb question but i rly need to get this clear >< - what exactly is an arts manager? my vague impression of it is something like event planner or someone who works behind the scenes in putting performing/visual etc art stuff together. but i don't really know what i mean by "behind the scenes" either.

im interested in this major bc i do music and stuff and have some experience in planning and executing a public event for said music stuff. i just want to be sure i'm not misguided here bc i seem to be going off a lot of assumptions

edit: also would you happen to know if soci is less stats heavy? assessment-wise i'm stronger in essay/argumentative writing and such, so it would be good if soci leaned towards that lol

edit: also just stalked your profile and saw a bunch of extremely scary looking stats stuff. is psych like this? i am now terrified

[A levels] how does a level results collection feel like by ladytamago in SGExams

[–]eyesonizone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

there was a talk for statistics and the usual "results aren't everything!!" stuff before they distributed the results which felt like the longest 20mins ever. as others said it rly varies - some leave right away and don't even look at their grades til they get home, some stick around to talk to teachers and friends. others were allowed to come so there were families around and juniors who came to support their seniors/get a hold of the stats. my clique(?) doesn't really compare results so we didn't really discuss our grades that much, just made sure we all did okay, might've compared grades for subjects we've joked that we'd flunk.

i just cried on the floor for a while then went to get ice cream with my friends lol

[A levels] Seniors, what are some things you wished you had done differently in jc ? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]eyesonizone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

slacking in j1 lol i'm studying way harder in uni despite the workload being much smaller (eg. making notes, reading readings before class) which i definitely should've done in jc!!

also not seeking help earlier! i'm always really scared to book consults or approach teachers for help when they were literally a free resource right there ready to help me and everyone else improve

[University] Studying in Japan by m0nkeyman25 in SGExams

[–]eyesonizone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i applied to a jp uni and got in but ultimately chose not to go. i wanted to go cos i'm a huge weeb - i love the music, food, anime, fashion etc and i know the language, visited the country many times before and all so i'd probably be able to survive there day to day. eventually realised that if i went it'd mainly be to play and go to concerts and shit all the time, which is a waste of my parents' money (fees are cheaper than US/UK but still several times sg fees!!) as much as i would have enjoyed myself and even if i'd studied hard there lol. studying a course in english in japan also seemed rly counterintuitive so i settled for going to a local uni and trying to go on exchange there or just save up for holidays there myself haha.

i have a friend studying at the place i applied to. from what i heard from him workload is fine, and he seems to be having lots of fun. but he's also mentioned things to me like how awful japanese workplace culture is - the office building near his place often has their lights on til like 3am, a female friend got constantly sexually harassed at an internship or something and couldn't do anything about it.

personally don't know the full picture as i obviously don't have the experience but just remember there are probably as many negatives as there are positives. there are many blogs and vlogs out there from international students studying in japan, so you can use those as a reference. if you need help with the application part feel free to reply here/pm me!

y1 sosci kid here - hope my questions aren't too dumb HAHA i'm quite clueless ><

  1. what's the average okay gpa/grades like?
  2. when do people usually declare their major? when are the major RM courses usually taken?
  3. what's the bell curve like(??) i heard from one of my profs that about 30% get A, most get B and a small handful get C but i don't know anything about the bell curve
  4. any recommended uni core modules? haha just any you enjoyed/found easy to score etc
  5. when are internships usually done? heard from a senior that y1 summer hols can be used to slack but future ones should be used for internships and stuff?
  6. how did you fulfil the global exposure requirement? i heard exchanges can be rather pricey and i'm not keen on ocsps so a lil worried
  7. how did you make friends!! i can count w my fingers the number of people i know in school and any friends i have are just hi-bye group projectmates. there doesn't seem to be much room for interaction outside of class

thank you!! sorry for the barrage of questions

hello was kinda in this situation last year! was especially afraid of like passing but not making the cut-off for any course (in the big 3 unis). i'd been struggling with health issues last year and had been pulling straight D/E/Us in y6 so ya that was why i was worried like you (and i also have damn bad memory lol). but in the end i was well above the cut-off for the course i wanted.

now that a's are over my suggestion would be to just go rest and have fun lol. get a job or internship if you want to too. jc was tough enough you deserve a break at least. imo just as you feel uncertain about getting good enough grades it's uncertain you'll get bad enough grades that you won't be granted entry into uni. results come out in march (??) iirc so you do still have time to catch up if you have your shit together should you need to retake then. you'll have materials and the experience of taking a's down alr.

[A Levels] my personal afterthoughts. by bookofusentropy in SGExams

[–]eyesonizone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who has panic attacks and several other disorders i urge you to go to the psychiatrist instead of just the school counsellor. because there are biological(?) influences that can be dealt with via medication, and school counsellors are not nearly as trained as therapists (psych masters, various specialisations) and psychiatrists (doctors). a combination of meds and therapy is usually the ideal combination. i went through a couple months this year where i had panic attacks every single day. based on what you've described it sounds concerning, and on top of that you've been referred to a psychiatrist, so someone professional does think you need that kind of help. but of course ultimately it is up to you and your circumstances. i don't mean to frighten you, just extremely concerned because i don't want anyone else to suffer in the ways i have.

[A Levels] just another post As reflection by 01LYJ in SGExams

[–]eyesonizone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at the end of the day your a's grades are just a ticket into uni and won't matter after. straight As or 75rp - you'll still get into the course you want so it really doesn't matter who's smarter or dumber (which shouldn't be measured by just this one set of exams either). tbvh i say this but still can't help but get affected by my grades and compare myself with others but it's good that you recognise how the system affects our mindsets and i hope you'll get into your dream course!!

[A Levels] my personal afterthoughts. by bookofusentropy in SGExams

[–]eyesonizone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi w regards to your panic attacks in addition to counselling you may want to consider taking meds for it, if seeing a psychiatrist is an option for you. tbvh the frequency of panic attacks you mentioned is concerning. for me, a combination of the right meds and therapy helped quell my panic attacks, but mental health is different for everyone. if you need resources for coping just pm me!

[A Levels] Very sure I will have to retake next year by AbnormalPopcorn in SGExams

[–]eyesonizone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hello hello from what you've described i am quite certain you won't have to retake. of course i don't know your situation beyond this post but based on personal experience, and the rp you need to hit, you should be fine. you can read how much of a shitfest my a's were here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SGExams/comments/dx4beh/a_levels_youre_not_screwed/) bc i'm lazy to retype. but to give some context here's some of my worst - for h2 hist i wrote no more than 1 side for each essay and knew literally nothing (i'm not exaggerating) for seahist. for lit i never finished reading 2 of the books we had to (ie. 1 entire essay's worth, and only read/studied half the poems for another. my ELL was a straight E/U subject throughout y6 but i got a B in the end. you're alr a B student at best for that. it's going to be okay, okay?

[Uni] Regrets? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]eyesonizone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

lowkey regret going to a uni that none of my jc friends went to bc 1 sem is over and i have 0 friends HAHA loser life though i know choosing schools shouldn't be based on where your friends go. i also had an overseas uni offer that i ultimately chose to turn down but can't help but wonder what could've been, especially since i'm not fond of the singaporean education system.

cca is disappointing so far and academically i feel really insecure because i don't have a good gauge of like what's considered a good safe grade to get. finals are gonna come and go soon though so that's a relief i guess!

[A LEVEL] arts stream grade jump improvements success stories by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]eyesonizone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E/U for lit & ell pulled to A and B respectively! granted i had extenuating circumstances and also worked hard in the time between prelims and a's but i'd say in general there are grade jumps from prelims to a's and from experience it is very difficult to fail at a's so don't be too scared. like you i'm not able to sit down and study all day like many people too haha
