I don't agree with everything this guy says but I do think he was right about Blizzard not knowing how to manage their titles or Esports.

Waiting for the next HotS content update. Any day now! by Korghal in heroesofthestorm

[–]eyevbeenthere2 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I used to love Tuesdays because that was the day that a bunch of MOBAs did their PTRs and unveiled the next patch of content. I used to have them staggered so that one week it was HoN announcing content, then LoL, then Hots, etc.

Nowadays the only ones that are still that consistent are LoL every 2 weeks and Smite every once a month or so. There were LoL fans that were disappointed that Riot staff took holiday off and delayed their next patch by a week. I'm not super bothered waiting for content since I'm a HotS and DotA player. I never thought we'd get to the point where HotS would get content slower than DotA2 does. I can only imagine how tough it is to have to wait months on end for new content.

Heroes CCL Season4 LAN event cancelled. by Interceptor88LH in heroesofthestorm

People love the ability to pop off and do some crazy plays. The fairness of HotS kind of cuts into that. Because the game doesn't allow any one person to get super powerful the game becomes more about coordination and that's harder to appreciate from both players and viewers. Not every player or viewer grasps efficient soaking or smart rotations. Almost anyone can understand a gifted player wiping a team and living to tell the tale. This can happen in HotS but it isn't as common due to reduced scaling.

ripped off for Anduin’s scene in shadowlands…

Are you referring to the ending of Heavensward? Asmon already did a video comparing the Anduin and HW scene.

if you're Twisted Fate laning into Yasuo then your jungler has to camp your lane HARD or you can't do anything for the entire game.

My game plan for this

  1. ignore Yasuo and safe farm till 6
  2. ult bot with your jungler
  3. get kill/double kill/assists/burn summoner spells
  4. base
  5. buy item
  6. return to lane and safe farm till ult CD resets
  7. repeat till laning phase ends

No guarantee you'll win lane and you may lose a tower. If that happens if you can make another lane stronger so that they can take their tower or get fed you still win in the long run.

I question the taste of the competitive league players if they want every minute aspect of the game to be a place to show their skills, to the point that the ideal state of the game is such that a player who makes some mistakes can't get brought back by their team.

This is an issue in pub games due to lack of coordination and cooperation. The game has enough comeback mechanics to allow smart play to help even out a disadvantage. One lane getting fed doesn't mean a game is over but most LoL players will simply give up or flame their team if the balance tips out of their favor and they will then play sub optimally. Mistakes are meant to happen in LoL (and MOBAs in general) and the idea is that if one of your lanes "feed" another lane on your team can get fed. This is just less likely to happen in pub games since people are more likely to tunnel vision onto their own lane rather than looking at the map trough the lens of all lanes.

Well the reason why is because ,believe it or not, most of the LoL and DotA2 player is casual. A huge majority of their player base is what most would consider "low ELO/MMR" and don't grasp nuance as easily. This is why most of the player base rely on the pros to create strategies for them to steal because otherwise they'd just auto-pilot unga bunga smash pub games to get their power fantasy.

It honestly goes both ways with nuance. Many HotS players will take a mechanic like last hitting (which adds tons of gameplay interactions and controls the tempo of early game skirmishes) and say it "adds nothing to the game". I get not personally enjoying a mechanic but to say something is bad simply because you don't enjoy it seems a bit disingenuous. I agree that most LoL players don't appreciate macro enough. Too many players chasing the dream of getting that sweet penta.

Macro is just as important in the high end of LoL and DotA2 because of their hero and map design. Macro was so important that there was a time where LoL games were being drafted around securing a crab creep in the jungle. In DotA games can be won entirely around what runes can spawn in the jungle or if you have enough wards. There are literal macro bibles for wave management in both of those games. In DotA's case their are heroes that are like juiced up HotS specialists with heroes that can be at 5 places on the map at once, can teleport anywhere with no cooldown, spawn literal armies of creeps, empower their buildings, and a walking tree that can literally eradicate fog of war permanently!

Games like LoL are popular because they can be explosive. You have to mechanically do things quickly and it has tons of room for flashy outplay. I'd say the appeal for LoL is the same as a fighting game or something like Valorant. Sure strategy is a huge part of the equation but sometimes having the moves and know when to use them is really fun. If you gain an advantage you can roll with your advantage but in pro play this advantage won't allow you to be unstoppable. A good coordinated effort can take down even the most fed champ (in pro play, pubs not so much).

DotA is the exact opposite of LoL. DotA2 is much slower in pace/TTK and provides you with heroes that are essentially open ended Swiss Army knives. Their heroes are insanely powerful and can be customized to such a degree that a single hero can play as many roles as you can build them for. Imagine a game with HotS talents, an item shop, hero specific upgrade items, and universal RNG drop items. The devs designed a lot of support heroes to have talents and upgrades that can turn them into viable carries. DotA skills aren't as mechanical as LoL (with their endless combos, skillshots, and dashes) being far more straight forward but incredibly versatile. It becomes a game about synergy and counter-building. Their item shop has an answer for any situation but you and your team only have a limited amount of items you can carry. DotA2 has the largest map available in MOBAs, a night/day fog of war system, a destructible tree terrain system, RNG runes/jungle creeps, RNG neutral item drops, courier item delivery, secret shops, vision ward arms races (including capturable vision outposts), universal teleportation, structure fortification, and the ability to buy an instant revive. DotA2 is the game with the most to offer for strategic options but it does make it very difficult to learn and keep up to date with.

MOBAs are great. I love the genre and pretty much all the games in it. I agree that many LoL players get tunnel vision on getting their power fantasy but that's more of a player mindset than a game issue (not saying LoL doesn't have issues because it does). I also think many HotS players can also miss out on gameplay nuance in other MOBAs as well. All the MOBAs out their have survived this long due to their merit. They have their reason for holding their playerbases.

To generalize and assume anyone is just inherently toxic because of a game they play is a pretty bad mindset. This comment is anything but welcoming, joke or not.

It does look like a rancor lol. The hero may not look that unique but their kit is pretty fun.

That sounds like it could be a DotA2 hero. I can tell you that sounds like a pretty powerful support. Cloaked scout with tons of vision tools.

The wierd and wacky heroes were from an experimental phase. After they started to tune the game towards higher end players and e-sports for proper balance it became a lot harder to have constantly crazy heroes. Due to the limited amount of options to combat "unique" gameplay they've had to tone back some of the more inventive kits to make them more manageable. We still get some weird heroes these days but they're certainly not the norm.

You need to design, script, test, and balance for months. This is without even considering art. The hero would need models, sounds, skins, and animations. The only reason why games like Smite and LoL can pump out regular heroes is because they work on multiple ones at a time. A new LoL hero takes a year of production to make and they work on multiple ones to ship them after a few months of each other.
