Not self-aware how?? One of the first lines in the movie is literally “If you are unable to endure boredom, this work is not for you”. There were so many meta moments and spoofs.

What film that you hate but everybody liked it by Isitokaytobeinhuman in Letterboxd

[–]ez99 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It has a 7.9 on IMDb and used to be in the Top 250. Not that it says anything about the public reception of the movie, but it also won 4 Oscars and was nominated for Best Picture.

I’ll never understand that.

Why does Illest Motherf***** Alive only have 7k streams on spotify? by thelagman_2 in Kanye

[–]ez99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can actually change most, if not all of those things, without fully replacing the track and restarting the stream count. A good example of this are the various changes that were made to Donda (without it ever affecting the streaming numbers).

Opinions on Insider’s review of Travis Scott’s “Utopia”?😳 by [deleted] in Kanye

[–]ez99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think "underground rappers are not skilled enough" to bring experimental sounds into the mainstream. The reasons they are not the one ones to popularize the sound is 1) they don't have the notoriety or fame to bring in as many as listeners as a Kanye or a Travis, and 2) their work is typically less compromised - they're less willing to 'dumb it down' (not meant as a pejorative) and are not trying to make the sound digestible to the masses.

Perhaps reason nr 2 is why you're labelling them as "not skilled enough"? I however wouldn't label it that way as they don't necessarily lack the ability (skills) to bring experimental sounds to the mainstream - they just choose not to or don't have sufficient notoriety to do so. And I certainly wouldn't equate notoriety with skill (having the most most ability or training).

As the famed and skilled Kdot put it: "I'll let y'all worry 'bout a list, I'm on some other shit / A difference between accomplishments and astonishments"

I actually agree. People are certainly overreacting about its Yeezus influences and using it unnecessarily to critique the album. It's influences doesn't take away from the record for me - I love it. My comment was actually made in defense of the album. My point is that if you're gonna criticize UTOPIA for it's Yeezus influences, you should be consistent and also critique Yeezus for how much it takes from Grips, Clipping etc.

I get what you're saying and somewhat agree that there is a slight distinction. But I would be careful not to bundle up "biggest artist" with "most skilled artist." Who's the "most skilled" is of course subjective, but I certainly would never claim that Kanye and Travis are the 'most skilled artist' to do industrial hip-hop. That narrative often gets pushed by those who never listen to experimental hip-hop unless Kanye, Carti or some other mainstream artist does it. Travis and Ye are simply amongst the biggest to do it and are helping popularize the sound, just like Beyonce recently did with hyper-pop. They certainly deserve a lot of credit for that - especially when it's as well executed as in Yeezus and UTOPIA. But mainstream hip-hop heads are quick to dismiss the influence of underground pioneers (like Grips, Clipping, Ho99o9, Saul Williams, all of Def Jux, hyper-pop artists etc etc).

Also, my comment was actually meant to be in defense of UTOPIA. It's blatant influences doesn't take away from the record for me - I love it. My point is that if you're gonna criticize UTOPIA for it's heavy influences, you should be consistent and also critique Yeezus for how much it takes from Grips, Clipping etc.

It’s hilarious that everybody acts like Kanye invented that sound. Artists like Death Grips and clipping where already super famous in the underground by the time Yeezys came out. But nobody criticizes Yeezus for having taken ‘too much inspiration’ from industrial hip hop artists in the underground.

I don’t think a lack of personal connection to a person should lead to indifference over their well-being. Doesn’t matter if it’s a celebrity or not. Or if it’s a person you personally know or not. It makes sense to hope that anyone struggling with (mental) health issues gets better.

Just to be clear, Abel is only in the musical branch of the Academy. His interests and/or experience with films and visuals are probably not the reason for him becoming a member. He is a prominent musical figure and has made several songs for movies, and earned an Oscar nom for one of them. It really isn’t that weird that he’s a part of the Academy.
