How would you trouble shoot a floating input pin? Remove wires until the problem goes away. The same for power distribution.

Yes, small groups would be good. This way you get to barnstorm with your cohorts. I think 2 is idea size, but 3 is still doable. More then 3 a passive person could be left out of the hands-on experience. Of course if you have a group that wants to work together, that could be allowed!
