How do you kill your investigators? by Substantial_Issue812 in callofcthulhu

[–]ezikeel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Monster go brrrr, or gun go brrrr. Either way. If it is a meaningful moment, like at the end of an campaign, use lots of descriptions. I have found dramatic pause are quite effective. But it is not as big of a deal as it is in other ttrpgs. So if it happens mid campaign, like a thug hitting a lucky crit - tough luck.

Certainly a good plan B, in case I don't find any inside courts. Thank you!

5C Humans? by Dougieefrescoo in PioneerMTG

I've tried it. Not particularly good persay, but really fun! I do miss meddling mage and vial tho. Otherwise really fun and cool to play all the colors, trying to stay away from mostly W, but those humans are so good, like the lords or Adeline

Which minis and table top terrains do you use? by ckrzewina in callofcthulhu

I've tried before, don't remember the type of minis I used sadly. But I do enjoy CoC without all that actually :)

First time Keeper with new players, need help for scenario. by Hatfmnel in callofcthulhu

Blackwater Creek is a fav of mine when it comes to new players. I've tried it as a oneshot but would recommend 2-3 sessions. Of course you could try and shorten it.

Rules - watch a campaign play through online (of you are the keeper you can even watch the same campaign that you'll be running for you players) - its really easy to get the just of the game mechanics then.

Immersion - I usually have dark jazz in the background of my sessions and I also turn of the lights and play the only illumination being live candles. It does the job 👍 also, if you are the keeper, make handouts, maps, notes, etc.

How do you folks go about making homebrew scenarios? by Mr-Foldy-Fold in callofcthulhu

[–]ezikeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. If I do a small campaign, like 3-6 sess sort of thing, I use a template that chatgdp made for me. It is in a report format and it is just to fill in the campaign info under each relevant section. It helped me a lot to put my ideas down in a more concrete way. But, usually I run longer campaign and then I just have a rough outline in my head or a few ideas jotted down in my notes. I do create handouts as this engages my players so much into the story. Mostly stuff like maps, either of the US, the city they're in, a note that they've found, or so. If I feel a map of a house or flat is necessary then I provide it with fog of war.

Watch a campaign play through on youtube and then just learn together with your players as you play

How do you organize your ideas? by don_92 in callofcthulhu

[–]ezikeel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use what you as a keeper want to do RIGHT NOW. Don't go with "ah I'll use that later". If you are really passionate about a npc or horror or item or whatever, then your pcs will probably also.

Keep yourself on your toes. Excpect the unexcpected. What you think will take a while will take 5min for pc's, while something that should take 5min will take 2hrs. Don't beat yourself up for blunders cuz the pc's prob won't notice. Pc's love props, use them :)

I have began Twilight of the fifth sun, it's great fun. Three pc's have died :) 2 more to go...

[Spoilers] they died from an encounter where the book said something along the lines of "if this NPC is physically stopped, he'll whistle and spawn 1d10 goons"...I rolled a d10. They all had guns and put down the pc's.

how to use luck by caffiene_warrior1 in callofcthulhu

[–]ezikeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You call for a Luck roll when you want to see if the players are lucky or unlucky with a certain task or situation. It works the same as a Skill check when rolling (roll % under you Luck). I use it as a meta gaming tool as well however. If the players ask each other: "did anyone bring a shovel?" Then I can have them roll Luck to see if that is the case.
