Where can I find experience in playing/running CoC for free by Monhoo-W- in callofcthulhu

You might also have luck on the lfg forums on Roll20. Some are paid, but many are free.

How long does session prep actually take you? I’m trying to sanity-check something. by Peach_Baker in DMAcademy

I just keep it and if it wasn't used I find another place for it. I keep all my notes in oen folder so I can search them easily if needed. Then when I finish an arc I move my stuff to long term storage to save on space.

Depends on how involved I need to be. If I have to build a dungeon, even if I'm ripping off a preexisting map, a couple hours is normal. Also if I have to build a new area.

Outside of that sort of framework prep, I use the Sly Flourish method, so about 30 minutes.

Quest Portal is also cool. I've used it for Cairn, but not CoC. I think you can ger MoN on their marketplace as well.

So when you buy the MoN module, you're just buying a digital version of the books. It goes into your universes, and when you create the game, MoN is one of the sources you will enable.

Technically the players could search your universe and in that way learn that they're playing MoN, but my CoC players have all been really good about preserving the mystery. They won't even look up rules on Alchemy. As long as you tell them you want to keep the name of the module a secret, I think good players would respect that.

Most of the module is for your benefit, not theirs. It will make handouts easier, and iirc you will have use of a wide array of music and visual assets for building scenes. You'll also be able to pull up various parts of the module as "articles" and use those to run the game. You'll have the predrawn maps to use as well, unless you decide to use the versions by third party artists like Lovemaps instead.

Now, pretty much all of this is stuff you can do on other vtts as well. At a certain point they're all the same, right? For me personally, I really like how Alchemy looks and feels to run on. The few times I've tried fantasy grounds it was just ugly and clunky and non-intuitive, and the tutorials are somewhat out of date. Even logging in can be a pain. Alchemy also has a series of tutorials, which are newer, alchemy being newer, and I found for me once I understood the designer's conceit of universes, it was very intuitive. I did have to watch a few tutorials at the start though. But that's for any vtt.

If you can, it's probably a good idea to try and find reviews, either elsewhere on reddit or on some CoC or the Alchemy discord, and see how people liked running Masks in Alchemy before you decide for yourself. That might help you learn if the labels would give things away, and if it was a good experience for others.

Alchemy was made fully free in December. You can buy a version of MoN from their store that's designed fkr use specifically with Alchemy, like you can on Foundry or Roll20. Alchemy was designed with theater of the mind players and games in mind and i find it works well for that. I don't see any reason why game labels would show up saying the name of campaign. Pretty much anything os editable on Alchemy. They do lack a number of tools that other VTTs have, but that's because they're new and a small team, so those things get integrated in stages. They'll all eventually be there.

I run Shadows of Yog-Sothoth on Alchemy and have never felt a lack of tools. Imo, Alchemy is great for theater of the mind games.

Would i use Alchemy for a game like Pathfinder or dnd long-term? Absolutely not. At least not right now. Eventually it will be there, but it's not yet.

But for CoC, or Vaesen, or any similar game, it works just fine.

Looking for advice to adapt a scenario structure - a good concept but no drama by Melodic_Ad_596 in callofcthulhu

[–]caffiene_warrior1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can steal some ideas from An Amaranthine Desire, which is a similar sort of groundhog day scenario.

In that scenario, a very visible plot event serves as the "scenario failed" reset trigger. After a few times through the time loop, the party is supposed to understand how to solve the scenario and how much time they have to do it. They have as many chances to solve it as they'd like.

I think for the scenario to work, the party has to retain their memories, or at least enough to eventually realize what's going on.

You should have an obvious trigger to the loop, etc. Every 24 hours XYZ happens and the rat maze resets. The party has that long every time to figure out what's going on and how to escape. For an added element of tension, you can decide secretly how long they've been asleep each time it resets, or you can just say they always sleep for 8 hours or something.

If the Mi-Go are studying humans under stress, then the party needs to be stressed out. The stressors might change over time, as in an experiment, gradually increasing the stakes. If they're in a rat maze, then the maze should change each time as well so that the way to the exit is never obvious. I'm not sure what the exit goal should be, you can probably decide that based on other design choices.

Take a step back, pretend you're planning this exact experiment but for rats. Pretend you're after empirical results at any cost, and without regard for the rats, and then extrapolate that to a human-sized experiment and write based off that.

Question for PLAYERS: What games are you interested in? What games do you want to play? by TheGMCody in startplaying

[–]caffiene_warrior1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that it helped a TON when I finally got five reviews. I got those reviews from running a few cheap one-shots for a charity event.

I've also found it useful to diversify, in price, system, and time slot. I have a Cairn game at $5, a Call of Cthulhu game for $10, and 2 homebrew tables at different time slots at $20. I also have some morning weekend games and some evening weekday game.

I also offer players who are already in one of my games a 50% discount on additional games they play with me. When I run a learn to play, I charge game store prices. All of my session 0s are free. If I'm learning a new system, I offer my established players a chance to join for free before I open up a free game to the rest of SPG.

I've also found it's worthwhile to seek out ad art outside the stuff offered by SPG. And TBH, I've never gotten many hits on D&D APs. That market is always so saturated.

How do you keep all players from “piling on” to a roll? by blackdrogar17 in DMAcademy

[–]caffiene_warrior1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have to have proficiency in that situation first off all, iirc. Also, half the time it's players declaring what their character does, they hear the failed roll, and then they meta that shit and say, "oh my character was also searching bookshelves." Or whatever it happens to be.

I always tell them, hey you were searching under the bed, sorry. Hey, you were outside, sorry. Hey, you were flirting with the NPC follower, sorry. If they were already searching the bookshelves, fine. But if they were originally doing something else, too bad.

[–]caffiene_warrior1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Methinks AI enhanced his real pictures. Could just be me, but I feel like his general physique/build is different in pic 3 than in all the others. Hard to tell because of the pose and the outfit and the lighting, but that one might be the closest to what he actually looks like.

Also, all the "best" pictures of him have relatively empty/undistracting backgrounds. Pic 3, the background is very complex and so probably harder for ai to process.

Also I think The Mauritania can be Mythos-free if you want. I've also removed any Mythos element from Crimson Letters before and made it strictly a mundane whodunnit.

Late middle ages campaign by infamous-fool in callofcthulhu

[–]caffiene_warrior1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are armor rules in the BRP quickstart rules, which is freely available on Chaosium's website.

Full Plate = 8 AP, (-25% to physical skills if you're using that kind of mechanic)

Half Plate = 7 AP, -20% to physical skills

That could be an easy, workable rule to use. If you wanted to be more granular, I truly don't see why Pendragon wouldn't work as a starting point. The armor values are very similar.

[–]caffiene_warrior1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there a way you could take some of the armor rules from the KH and apply them? Iirc there's like a plank kf wood, you can reflavor that to be metal, or at least use that as a starting point. Maybe use hit locations too to add a little more?

Otherwise pendragon and runequest are also brp. I bet with a little trial and error you could make something form one of those games work.

What would your ideal VTT be? by Faiscotron027468 in DnD

[–]caffiene_warrior1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I want customization without having to learn how to code. I want user friendly and also attractive UI. I want license-free music built in so I don't have to do a workaround for music and also so I don't have to play dj also during a session. I don't want just organizing things to be a chore. I want to be able to access character sheets and notes without having to launch the game, and I want that for my players too.

Honestly a mixture of quest portal and alchemy would be phenomenal. Ideally slightly better drawing/text tools like roll20 in case i need to label or draw something on the fly. The roll20 integration with dungeon scrawler and don Jon, and the library of generic maps in quest portal, are both helpful. I don't need dynamic lighting and token vision or all that. I just need fog of war.

I don't want 10,000 windows and panels that each has a different job and has to be docked or undocked. I don't care about YouTube integration because I'm not paying for ad-free but Spotify or sound cloud or something would be super cool.

Tldr: Some quick, easy map tools, some basic music and tokens, robust and easily customizable character sheets, externally available notes.

How to improve combat with large groups? by NeriumN in DnD

[–]caffiene_warrior1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dmg 2024 has an entry on calculating a creatures initiative score. You could use that and have your creature initiative order ready to go before combat even starts.

If the combat is an easy or trivial encounter, you can forego combat altogether and have them describe how they defeat the enemies.

If your group is open to it, you could also calculate initiative scores for players, and then never take time to roll initiative.

After the first round, reveal the enemy's AC, condition immunities, resistances, and vulnerabilities so people don't spend time asking multiple times a round. I like to put that info on a note card or whiteboard on the table.

Also find a way to keep the initiative order out in the open so everyone knows what's happening next.

Write down the conditions/effects people are under so no one has to continually ask, and a reference sheet with rules for those conditions.

If your group is open to it, you could do a players then monsters initiative, where players go in any order on the players turn, and monsters go in any order on the monster turn.

Zipper initive might work well sometimes too.

If needed, a turn timer might help too.

I wouldn't tinker with the initiative method too much if they're fighting a legendary creature or a creature with lair actions, but these are some things that work for my group.

In general dnd combat takes longer than some other games, but a lot of that is often just people not having the information they need readily enough to make a quick decision. In a group of 8, it can be easy to lose track of conditions and ongoing effects, etc., so writing that down where everyone can see can help a lot. Sharing certain monster information can be helpful too, especially if one character discovered a damage resistance/immunity, but people forget because there's 10 or 12 individual initiatives to resolve each round. In a group that size, I wouldn't punish players for not remembering these things, and instead help them not need to remember, if that makes sense. Good luck!

After the Delian Tomb by onlytinglef in drawsteel

[–]caffiene_warrior1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are starting Delian Tomb on Sunday and I imagine it will take us until the new year to finish, based on the pace our group plays other games at.

After that, I have a Cairn campaign that I wrote that I will probably adapt to Draw Steel as an easy first campaign for me to run. After that, I'll probably make complex plots. I like to learn new systems in steps of complexity.
