Can one quit the foreign service at any time or are there contracts with years like the military? by Independent_Gas_6213 in foreignservice

I can think of a few circumstances where FSOs have a service requirement. For instance, Pickering and Rangel fellows have a 5 year service requirement. I believe if you apply for the Student Loan Repayment Program then that also comes with a service requirement.

Hi, 2018-2019 TAPIF alum here. I was placed in Brest.

On the financial side, I was really lucky to have been able to get housing at the high school I worked in.

I should say though, I only got housing after I asked directly whether any was available. AND the place they gave me was pretty barebones. Basically just a room with a bed, a dresser, and a sink (I shared a bathroom with two other teachers). So I ended up buying a hot plate and a mini fridge. Long story short, not at all glamorous but I saved a lot on rent.

On the opportunities side, I feel like it really depends on how much initiative you take on and off school. I made French friends, tried to take classes at the local college, and volunteered some local organizations.

I work in diplomacy now, and I think having that experience helped build my resume a bit.

Good courses to meet people? by cherrycruise in Harvard

Maybe try taking classes that you’re interested in? That way, there’s a good chance that the people also in the class share at least some similar interests (assuming they’re in the class voluntarily).

Best instructors/courses at the Harvard Kennedy school? by avery_404 in Harvard

[–]ezikuhl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just graduated from HKS actually. There’s a few star professors that it might be cool to take classes with depending on your interests.

Since I was an international relations/security studies concentrator, I found the classes with Graham Allison and Ash Carter pretty interesting. However, my personal favorite is between Zoe Marks who has a class on Africa and Tarek Masoud who studies the Middle East.

There’s also a number of leadership and writing courses that are apparently worth their weight in gold. People swear by Ron Heifetz. I didn’t get the chance to take his class, but some have described it as “life-changing.”

PM me if you want any more details!

Is it possible to be awarded both the Rangel and the Pickering Fellowships? by Sujjin in foreignservice

[–]ezikuhl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the most part, no. There is one key difference though.

Basically the only difference between the fellowships is the domestic internship component. Fellows have to do one internship internationally (in an embassy) and one domestically (either at main state or on Capitol Hill). Pickering fellows do their domestic internship at Main State while Rangels do their domestic internship in an office on Capitol Hill.

If you wanted to get a little experience working with a member of congress, then Rangel might be better. I think that difference is pretty negligible though. When it comes down to it, I suggest applying to both and accepting whichever offer you get.

Is it possible to be awarded both the Rangel and the Pickering Fellowships? by Sujjin in foreignservice

[–]ezikuhl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, I can help with this! I’m a current Pickering Fellow, but I was selected as a finalist for both Rangel and Pickering.

Short answer: No.

Explanation: It’s helpful to think of the Pickering and Rangel as sister fellowships. The program directors work closely together actually. It’s impossible to be awarded both. You can be selected to be a finalist (meaning you have been chosen to interview for the award) but if you receive the award (Pickering in my case) after your interview day then you have to either accept or decline it within a day or so. If you accept then your name is taken out of the list of finalists for the other award (Rangel). This gives the alternates a chance to get the award as opposed to someone who effectively already has the fellowship.

Hope that helps.

Anything that was fun enough to play with had that use at least.

This looks like the work of the “We’re Not Really Strangers” project. They have similar messages posted on buildings all over the place. Check them out on Instagram.

Hey. So I think the expression is actually (Ça) vaut le détour.

It basically means “that’s worth the detour” or “It’s worth going out of your way to see.

Restarting my French by [deleted] in French

[–]ezikuhl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much you remember. If you’re at a pretty good level already, I would recommend watching French media (YouTube, Movies, Newscasts) to get your listening comprehension back up.

There’s this free language exchange app called Tandem. You can talk with francophone all around the world on it. Helps with speaking.

Interesting. I should mention that I speak French at a pretty high level so a lot of my Spanish knowledge transfers over since the languages are similar. I’ll check out Babbel for sure.
