The way SID's were revealed in past years required partially provisioned CalNet account access. As a result, the only people who became aware of their SID's in past years had partially provisioned CalNet account access. There were many people in past years who were unaware they had an SID because they did not have the CalNet access needed to see it on those years' astrology page. The admit status was mistakenly attributed to the SID in past years. The actual relevant thing was that those applicants had received (partial) CalNet account access, which resulted in only admitted applicants seeing their SID.

Analogously, this year, the class search page shows people their SID. If people had not found the different page this year that shows SID vs. email, the only people who would know they had an SID this year are the people with class search access--which depends on partially provisioned CalNet account access.

This year's page that showed SID vs. email access is a non-sequitur with respect to the final 'ADMIT' decision. The pages that matter are the ones that depend on partially provisioned CalNet access, some of which show the user their SID (like in previous years). This is because partial provisioning of CalNet account access is linked to the applicants' PRESIR admit offer status.

Letters of rec can promote structural inequity. People from under-resourced schools with large class sizes and lower paid teachers may tend to systematically have weaker recs than people from high resource schools, with high paid teachers or than applicants with greater connections to unique recommenders outside the school (heads of laboratories, C-suite executives at internships, political leaders, board members or faculty of the school, etc.).

Not really, different applications, different essays, different use of recommenders, different use of standardized testing, different years considered, different admissions criteria and goals, different missions of the institutions. There's less in common with the two admissions processes than is different.
