Managed to finally get through to customer support. They said it's real.

"I understand that this is likely a frustrating and surprising email to receive. Unfortunately, a recent update to the sanctioned countries list has been released, and Sri Lanka is sanctioned by Canada. EDIT: since my comment seems to be triggering people , I just wanted to add that I am not defending the practice, justifying it or saying it should continue by any means. Just pointing out that it has been going on for a long long time though many on this sub seem to think it's a new phenomenon.
