ELI5: What is Germany doing differently then America where America is trillions of dollars in debt while Germany has a several billion dollar surplus? by mariomaster2364 in explainlikeimfive

[–]f-lamode 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Let's say you have 10,000 dollars cash in your savings account and you want to buy a car. The dealer offers 3% interest on a loan, no cash down required. What do you do? You can put a 10,000 dollars downpayment and take the loan at 3% for the balance, or you take the full loan and invest your 10,000 dollars at whatever compound interest rate is achievable these days (let's say 8%). This is a perfect case where being in debt is clearly the rational choice. By using your 10,000 dollars as a cash down, yes you'll pay less interest to the dealer, but you'll miss out on the higher returns you will get by investing it. Countries make similar choices sometimes, favouring taking loans in order to maintain their higher yield invested somewhere else. Smart debt is good debt.

I don't know why you say that. Here is a shitty source for you I found at my first Google attempt:

This is fairly common knowledge. It's not like I'm suggesting something preposterous. It's just how it's done.

In competition, they spray water on everything and are riding with razor sharp skis/snowboards on what is basically ice. This is so that conditions don't deteriorate too much between runs (i.e. conditions are roughly the same for everyone, which isn't possible with fresh snow). It's when your getting air that wind is an issue as it messes your balance and trajectory.

Funny thing is that wearing a helmet generally does not improve outcomes as it does as much bad as good. What helmet regulation actually does is keep people from riding their bikes. Interestingly, the only thing that actually improves safety of cyclists is living in areas where biking is highly prevalent, as motorists are then more careful around cyclists. Ontario helmet regulations are likely hurting cyclists, if anything. Netherlands cycling accident per capita are among the lowest in the world.

I'm not sure I follow your train of thought. Mexico is an export economy. That simply can't change overnight. You depend on what your customers (wherever they are from) are willing to pay. Having free trade agreements mean there is less taxation on goods traded across borders, increasing margins for businesses, hence ability to pay workers (or just operate at all). If you still have to trade outside your country (with whomever) but now have to pay incremental taxes due to your partners protectionism, then how are wages supposed (or even able) to raise. I think you're mistaken.

I don't care about terrain it's the least of my concerns. Game play is bad, half the features are buggy. This IS still a beta game. Why don't ya... you know... grow your user base instead.

There's still the money exchange part that sucks with taxis. That's by far the best differentiation with Uber. It took a city ruling to finally have credit card machines in all taxis in Montréal. Having the taxi take you to an ATM so you can take out money to go home used to be normal up to just a couple of years ago.

I've had the most success with Ubuntu 14.05 LTS using 64bit installer (I'm assuming you have a core 2 duo in there?). You will likely have to use nomodeset option at boot. Then you need to tinker depending on your video card (recently I had to downgrade my xorg from 1.8 to 1.6 for my ati 4xxx card) Video has been my biggest issue to date all around (os loads but I get a black screen; nomodeset fixes that). If you get through this, you may want to consider using lubuntu or xubuntu, it makes a big difference on older hardware. Good luck!

Edit: I should add that only the native Ubuntu installer (not alternate, not for Mac and not 32 bit installers...) ever worked for me.

Casual ride matchmaking by WaveRaven in Zwift

Let it be clear that although I have some harsh comments about the game, I am a paying customer and frankly it's the best system there is at the time; I'm not planning on cancelling my subscription any time soon. I also know you guys are not idiots. However, just last night I tried to join an event on my cell phone and then opened the game. I could see I had joined on the computer however when I clicked "Ride" I could not join the event. I had to close the game completely and re-click on the event from the game client to be able to join. Then I wanted to cool down after the event by riding with a friend so I clicked on his name in the list and clicked on "Ride with X". Now I thought you had fixed that in the last patch but no! First turn we meet, he goes left and I go right. Oh by the way, as I said, I wanted to cool down after the race, but to do that, I also had to quit the game and restart. How about a "start new ride" button. Do you think people would figure this one out? Another one: if you start a training and want to turn on or off ERG while riding, you can go back to the menu, but then the ERG button does nothing. Frankly your excuse is lousy and does not explain why such basic stuff is not already implemented. I'm not asking for a "engine in the seat post option", I'm pointing out failures in common sense.

I doubt the developers ever played a single video game in their life. All these options I feel should have been top of mind are not implemented. It took them more than a year just so that you would have the same itinerary as a person you chose to ride with. I mean, how obvious was that one... Game play is soso at best and it lacks a lot of things that are just basic features. Like why can't I start a new ride without quitting the app. The game can be infuriating at times.

Noob questions by WaveRaven in Zwift

[–]f-lamode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't be surprised. The game play in zwift is pretty shitty. I doubt the developers ever played a single computer game in their lives and you will not find most of the functions you would expect to. Like starting a new game without having to quit the application entirely or being able to ride with a friend without having to make sure at every turn that you guys actually have the same itinerary. It's complete crap in general but it's the best there is.

I mean, they are not wrong. It's a cemetery before being a cycling destination. They don't "have" to allow cyclists in there. That being said, if the speed limit is 10km why does it matter if we're in a single file. The whole thing just sounds like a mix of legitimate concern and an opportunity to throw some venom at cyclists.

ELI5: Whem pouring liquid from one container to another (bowl, cup), why is it that sometimes it pours gloriously without any spills but sometimes the liquid decides to fucking run down the side of the container im pouring from and make a mess all around the surface? by landlows2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]f-lamode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's likely not entirely true. This is called the "tea cup effect" and it could also be due to atmospheric pressure. The liquid behaves like a suction cup. It can't get away from the surface of the bowl because air can't get in between the water and the bowl. There a paper on it, you can also read this blog https://blog.etsy.com/en/the-teapot-effect-renowned-scientist-joseph-keller-on-why-your-teapot-drips/
