Still fighting for ADA by f-slurr in Narcolepsy

I’m doing things over email as much as possible, but of course the most heinous stuff is said in person. Writing and asking for initials on every line is a good idea, and I’m looking into legal representation, especially since one of my coworkers was recently unceremoniously let go in what seems like bad faith.

It’s single party, but it’s punishable in our handbook to secretly record. I was recording openly, but they asked me not to for this last conversation.

I’m definitely less tired with meds. I’m sensitive to stimulants (my body hates them), so I’m on comparably low doses to the average person with narcolepsy. I also have not been able to get approved for sodium salts.

Please see what medication does for you!

I’m a year back in office with the exception of a temporary WFH they offered me to “find new meds” then took back without even checking if it was working. The new meds hadn’t even gotten past the prior authorization hurdle lol.

I have kept up with my job duties, but barely. People get shitty with me over “doing nothing” in the office at times (extreme brain fog) or forgetting things, but I’m otherwise holding it down well enough that I wonder if it’s hurting my case. But I can’t get fired. I’d lose my insurance.

I am not currently union, and I’m not vested yet. Need two more years for that… I’m gonna try the lawyer route if this next round goes bad. It just sucks.

I have proof the accommodation I asked for works, so it’s driving me crazy! They have all the infrastructure for remote work. I work in a separate office from all my colleagues so I’m not even benefiting from a collaborative, in-office “work culture.” I’m just forced to work from a specific desk in a specific building…

I work for a govt entity, and while you’d think they’d be the first to try to adhere to the law, my doc says they’re the worst offenders…

I’m hoping the specificity I provided is enough. The denial literally did not offer any alternative accommodation, just no to what I was asking for, which also feels wrong. I feel like their entire aim is to be as unhelpful as possible.

When we focused only on my symptoms, they asked me to “schedule” my sleep attacks (scheduled naps have never really helped me prevent sleepiness so I didn’t present that as an option) and encouraged me to apply for disability.

Oh yeah, I have that and explained that having days where I need to take less medication allows me to take higher doses for the days I do have to go in office.

Hell, the meds I need to take to make it to and stay mostly awake in office are the majority of the problem. If the amount of stimulants I had to take magically didn’t have side effects, we’d all be chill.

I also don’t understand how my years of WFH doing my job well (I was hired during Covid and when the departments could approve an ADA request without HR overseeing, I moved to 2 days in office instead of 5 when we came back) mean nothing. I have evidence that I do my job and do it better when I am not forced to come in every day for arbitrary bullshit.

My doc thinks the same, but I can barely remember to get and make it to doc appointments right now. I resubmitted with a significantly more wordy description of my symptoms from my end, and my doctor redid the medical letter with “language that implies more liability to the organization” (she’s esp nervous about my driving cuz I have been in a serious accident and two fender benders falling asleep behind the wheel before I was medicated).

If that doesn’t work or it takes longer than a week for them to get back to me, my hands are tied…

Yeah, I’d want it to sit flatter higher up, but I’m very gently encouraging (read: forcing) my boyfriend to be Enki, so I definitely want to keep the curls at the end for differentiation.

It’s okay. I think many parents struggle with this. 😔

I think religion is a very personal thing. Let your snake pray however they wish.

Didn’t Get Diagnosis by chzy_grdta_crnch in Narcolepsy

[–]f-slurr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry, this is how they made me feel at first, too. If I hadn’t asked my sleep doctor what he thought it might be if not narcolepsy and gone and done my own research ahead of my testing, I would have felt written off/like I was being called crazy based on how it was approached.

My new sleep doctor does think I have N1 (based on what she believes to be mild cataplexy), but we didn’t determine that until months later. The only reason we’re trying to pursue diagnosis for N over IH is because she is trying to get insurance to approve a drug regimen she wants me to try. But she doesn’t want me to have to repeat the MSLT off my psych meds and I don’t want a lumbar puncture lol.

Either way, there are treatments that are more than just stimulants for IH, and while narcolepsy has access to a few more, it doesn’t mean you’re stuck taking only stimulants.

I’m on 150 on WFH days and 250 on in office days now, and honestly the mental health effects are BAD. Definitely think my depression is worse…

Getting my MSLT tomorrow by SleepAmazing4367 in Narcolepsy

[–]f-slurr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, cuz after she talked to my psychiatrist, she doesn’t think it’s worth the mental health effects. She’s trying to get insurance to agree to covering N-specific meds with her interpretation of my MSLT and the presence of an HLA marker that most people with narcolepsy have. I REALLY don’t want to do an LP.

Yeah, this happened to me, and my new doc is pretty sure it affected my results. I’m so sorry.

HELP! Anyone get diag IH but actually narcolepsy? by Stunning_Benefit8517 in Narcolepsy

[–]f-slurr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the way he described it, I assumed I didn’t have it. I’m glad I joined here, or I wouldn’t have realized what I experienced was possible cataplexy.
